Polygraphs don’t work too reliably with normal people.
They are easily defeated by psychopaths. You don’t sweat lying when you have no conscience or shame.
It is for that reason the federal government is heavy on psychopaths. They weed out normal people with their polygraphs and select for remorseless liars.
FBI polygraphers know that undetectable deception is impossible when using a Stoelting Ultrascribe polygraph.
I had a brother in law in the 70’s & early 80’s who was a thief and one of the biggest bullshitters I have ever met.
He was a truck driver who laughed at polygraphs and drunkenly confessed to me he simply beat them.
I figured it was because I came to realize like many habitual liars he actually believed his own bullshit?
My ex told me her company used to ask people if they ever stole anything from previous employers and by and large, the answer was no with no lie detected. They would then ask if they had ever taken anything from an employer and invariable would confess or get caught in the lie. The polygraph examiner explained that the people did not consider it stealing if they just took a few $ from the till or a 12 pack from the cooler.
Twenty yeas ago I took a stapler home from the office, but I was working for the New Zealand government, so I figured it was OK.
