Sadiq Khan calls for an immediate bill freeze after energy regulator Ofgem announced a massive price cap increase

UK facing ‘national disaster’ – London mayor

The UK is facing a “national disaster” if the government fails to act immediately to solve the energy crisis, London Mayor Sadiq Khan warned after energy regulator Ofgem announced that the price cap on the average energy bill would increase to £3,549 ($2,323) from October.

Khan made the comments on Friday after Ofgem announced the 80% hike in the price cap, as struggling British households face what the mayor said would be a “bleak winter.”

The new price cap is almost triple what it was last October when it was raised to £1,277 ($1,505).

“With energy prices soaring and more families struggling to make ends meet, this government needs to step up and take urgent action now,” Khan said, arguing that the government has “consistently failed” to intervene and ministers “must act now to prevent this cost of living crisis becoming a national disaster.”

Brits “desperately need to know” what Westminster’s plan of action is, Khan added. Khan called for an immediate bill freeze and the introduction of a ‘Lifeline Tariff’ to ensure the most vulnerable in society receive a certain amount of free energy.

The mayor also pointed out on Twitter that there is “no actual cap” on the maximum that can be paid, and that the figure is just the cap for “those on average use.” Consumer champion Martin Lewis echoed that concern, saying nothing is stopping some households from paying £10,000 ($11,821) a year.

Lewis also said a movement is growing for Brits to refuse to pay energy bills, telling Good Morning Britain on Friday that if the government does not implement emergency measures, the ‘Don’t Pay’ movement “are going to become a louder voice in this country.”

The Don’t Pay movement states on its website that it is building its strength and “mobilizing for a non-payment strike” among those who want to challenge a “rigged system.”

Meanwhile, the Trades Union Congress said on Friday that energy prices are now rising 35 times faster than wages and 57 times faster than benefits, warning of a “catastrophic” situation if a bill freeze is not implemented.

Jonathan Brearley, the chief executive of Ofgem, admitted that the price cap increase will have a “massive impact” on households across Britain, which will have to make “difficult decisions.”

The UK can’t face a ‘national disaster’ since it ceased being a nation quite some time ago.
This lamentable state of affairs is personified by the London Mayor Sadiq Khan himself.

Nation: a large group of people of the same race who share the same language, traditions, and history, but who might not all live in one area.

Copy that Walt. UK is a ‘mixed’ economy according to the financial gurus – I think they have it right. Down here, deep in rural SW England, there are no Nigs, a few Dagos and Spics but we do have some East Europeans – not sure what we call them. They are generally the Poles left over from Brexit and mainly good, hard working chaps. I love their vodka parties – one family lived in our lane for a while but went back to Poland.

Are you related to the famous Walt?

I discussed it on another thread – forgotten which one – but we agreed that it was offensive slang used as an insulting and contemptuous term for a person of Italian or Spanish birth or descent.

Especially southern Italians and Sicilians.
Spanish speaking peoples are called “spics” here.
I still laugh at the word “spooks” for wonderful swarthy frens.

The UK has had over 50% of its population double jabbed and boosted, and another booster campaign is coming with the new “upgraded” injection.
If the injections are going to cause Antibody Dependent Enhancement, and if that is worsened with every additional injection, then getting the flu, or some other seasonal cold would be far more deadly to the double jabbed and triple boosted.
So what would the result be if people had to keep their thermostat at the lowest possible level because they can’t afford to heat their homes, or of the government did rolling shutdowns because Nat Gas shortages?
It’s almost as if they want to use an energy shortage to kill off even more people with seasonal illnesses than otherwise would occur.

Ah – you have spotted the cunning dystopian HMG plan. It saves money you see – the Care Homes & NHS are a designed disaster!

The Real Reason the NHS is Failing (Hint: Nothing To Do With Covid or Lack of Funds)

This winter is going to see the most almighty uprising in the whole of my life – and I have been around for many years, in areas you wouldn’t believe. I think I have a good appreciation of what’s coming down the pike. We are cosy and tucked in here deep in SW England. (scan down to Localisation)

According to Google that £3,549 =$4,169. Is that the total energy bill?

My fuel oil supplier sent out the notice to lock in a price of $3.99 per gal. for 1,000 gallons. That would get us to about the end of March. But when I went to sign up it was all sold out. Luckily, we’re friends with the family and they found a way to lock us in for 500 gallons.

So at the $3.99 price for 1,000 gallons, which doesn’t even cover all our heating and hot water for the entire year we shell out $4,000. Then there’s electricity, now priced at .22 KWH, up from .11 KWH here in NH.

Conservatively, I expect the electric bill to be between $2,400-$3,000 per year at that price. And the heat/hot water bill will be upwards of $5,000. So that’s $8,000 per year for energy. And the Brits are complaining about $4,100.

Not a single mention of the largest factor anywhere in the thread (not just this comment) – I agree with your price analysis, but what about:

Lack of Real Markets.

Price caps?

So, actually Price Controls….not to mention all the other grifting and political theft.

History shows Price Controls exacerbate economic malaise. This is pretty common knowledge at this point.

Criminal Infiltrators (like from The Mega Group or others we are unaware of) are destroying things up on purpose and we all know it…You can SEE IT.

The sooner this is accepted (not known – it’s known now…accepted) by the general population – worldwide – and people begin to challenge the criminals posing as politicians that have infiltrated almost every government, the sooner Clown World closes down.

So, WELCOME TO CLOWN WORLD…FOREVER!

Good stuff BL you have a point but remember the average wages are much lower in UK – “What is a good salary in the UK? A net monthly salary between £2,500 and £3,000 is considered a decent salary.” Read on:

No, No AA. WOGS are Egyptians (it comes from building the Suez Canal : the native workers had a brassard or armlet with a designation: “Workers Of the Government) = WOG. The Brixton lot are Jamaicans mainly, they are called Yardies, nicely, but Nigs generally. The term ‘Blacks’ is mostly accepted in polite company.

“The term is derived from the Jamaican patois for home or “yard”. The term may have specifically originated from the crowded “government yards” of two-storey concrete homes found in Kingston and inhabited by poorer Jamaican residents, though “yard” can also refer to “home” or “turf” in general in Jamaican patois.

Anyway – they are nowhere near us and that’s all that matters! 🙂

It does make me wonder about the news media. After looking at the British newspapers on drudge report I can find very little if anything about this or anything negative about the economy and the coming gas shortage.

“The Drudge Report is a U.S.-based news aggregation website founded by Matt Drudge, and run with the help of Charles Hurt and Daniel Halper. The site was generally regarded as a conservative publication, though its ownership and political leanings have been questioned following business model changes in mid-to-late 2019.”

“Drudge says that he “failed his Bar Mitzvah”

“Charles Hurt is an American journalist and political commentator. He is currently the opinion editor of The Washington Times, Fox News contributor, and Breitbart News contributor”

“Daniel Halper is an American political writer. He previously served as the online editor of the now-defunct neoconservative magazine The Weekly Standard until a management change at that publication in 2016 and from 2016 to 2017 was employed by the New York Post. Halper authored Clinton, Inc.: The Audacious Rebuilding of a Political Machine an unflattering 2014 biography of the Clinton family”

That’s really good. In Cape Town, where I hope to move in 2024 (if the election works out) electricity is: 2022/22. 1.54.ZAR kWh (USD 9c) so not too bad then? In UK today I have been quoted 73p kWh (USD 54c). It’s a no-brainer on power alone and we do have solar and LNG backup.

Stay there! They have their own sovereign investment fund exceeding $1 trillion (with a ‘T’) and plenty of hydro, gas (north sea) – what more could you want? AND they are my tribe – Vikings – very sensible people unlike the spawn that is Anglo Saxon.

If you know you history or have read the Anglo Saxon Chronicles, you will know that when the civilised Romans left the Anglo Saxons reverted to mud huts, sticks and stones – it was called the Dark Ages and pretty gloomy it was too. This says it all really:
