While I like the Autograph tune for the rest tis a reason they were one hit wonders, those songs sucked and were annoying as hell!
Enough of showing us yer pussy, already.
Anon, don’t like cats, howz about a baby and a dog, more suited to you am sure!
It was a joke, thou who doth projecteth thine own sexuality.
Hypersensitive drama tranny.
In the 1970s London, Ont had a couple of the funniest DJs I’ve ever heard. Many AM radio stations then had morning DJs who were expected to entertain the audience with humour. Today we have morning DJ crews of 2 or 3 who are hobbled by today’s ridiculous sensibilities (e.g., don’t insult anyone!). They try to be funny (you can tell because they constantly laugh at each other), but they’re simply not funny. Anyway back to the 1970s, this song, which I love, was introduced as follows: “Here’s Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose with a medley of their greatest hits.”
“Hast du etwas Zeit für mich..?” (Intro to the German version of “99 Luftballoons.”)
Probably a good thing I still can’t post video links. I’d be more a nuisance in this thread than is acceptable, even on TBP.
If I had to request one song to be added, it would be “DOOT DOOT” by Fruer,
or “BRING ON THE DANCING HORSES” by Echo & the Bunnymen,
or, how about “SHE SELLS SANCTUARY” by The Cult. (This was probably the most requested song on the radio and on the dance floor in the city where I lived at the time.)
The problem here, with me, is that I was heavily involved with non-commercial and commercial radio in the 1980s… and I worked at a dance club that drew people from cities ten times larger than ours. And, music moves my soul almost as much as the Holy Spirit.
Thanks for the collection today! I’m doing my best to keep from building a “TL: dr” list to supplement today’s selections.
The Cult was far more then a one hit wonder, had many hits and great albums with me favorite being The Witch off of the Cool World movie soundtrack:
Agreed. The Cult had several songs that received plenty of airplay. I had forgotten this was a thread of “One Hit Wonders.” I was thinking of highly popular songs that have since faded from memory on “Classic” radio stations, playlists and streams when I wrote my first comment.
My musical education continues, thanks to threads like these.
That must have been cool to hear stuff before it hit the public,of course, guess you had to wade through a lot of garbage also!
The year 1987 was when all the record companies started giving recording contracts to just about anyone. The number of albums we would receive weekly in the early 80s was about 25 per month, from all sources. In 1987, that number skyrocketed to about 100 per month. The crap was no longer being filtered by the record executives.
I had mixed feelings about that turn of a card. On one hand, yes, we had a shit-tonnne more work to sort through the incoming music. But, on the other hand, we were being given the chance to be the deciding factor as to what got air play. Power to the people, I suppose.
The biggest change at that time was in the lyrics and attitudes expressed in the songs being promoted. I’m not saying “Gangsta Rap” was something new on the horizon. After all, “MACK THE KNIFE” was a very popular song several decades ago.
As far as Echo & the Bunnymen go, I always liked “New Direction”:
Every time I hear The Cult, it takes me back to 1987 and Stella Brisco, my love at the time. She was my “Wild Flower” for real.
Turned out to be my “Love Removal Machine,” but I don’t hold that against the band.
Don’t tell the li’l ho’s name, ya tool. Jeebus.
Not all of us here are afraid to name names, my Anonymous friend.
It’s rude to the girl, not brave.
The girls we hung out with were into the new wave bands like echo and the bunny men, husker du, the smiths, the cure, and the biggest of them all Depeche mode wasn’t really my thing but the girls damn sure were. Oh to be young again.

I’ll take “Heard It on the X” over this any day.
If not mistaken, this one emerged in 1987.
Not their only hit, but a pretty good tune just the same.
So it fits, if we stretch the guidelines a bit.
Loud works best, IMO.
With the windows open, an Indian Summer in the air, and a good musical vibe.

They were very good live in ’92, touring behind the “Wish” album – a moving night all around.
Okay. I have a one-hit wonder who should be included:
“YOU SPIN ME ROUND (LIKE A RECORD)” by Dead or Alive. How’s that for a one-hit wonder?
Can’t forget THIS one from Aldo Nova….
Here is my contribution to 80’s one hit wonder songs that sucked and are annoying as fuck if you can’t shut them off!
Madness was certainly NO one-hit wonder. They put out 12 albums, and were leaders in the SKA music movement. Truly great saxophone playing as well. Just fun music.
Forgot one.
Modern version.
I just wanted a Pepsi…
And she wouldn’t give it to me.
Actually, it sounds kinda whiny-soyfaggy.
I assure you, their concerts weren’t soy faggy.

Lene Lovich!
Sparks! with Jane Wiedlin of “The Go-Go’s”
Falco’s original German version of “Der Kommisar” is just as good as the cover performed by AFTER THE FIRE.
How about Nina Hagen? Since you seem to have similar musical interests as I.
No interest, just ineradicable memory. Perma-earworms. Although Sparks are truly characters. Cum on Eileen! Let’s all cum on Eileen!
(PG-rated bukkake)
You have to applaud a guy in a band that has the courage to wear a Hitler mustache (Sparks).
Those guys (Sparks, aka the brothers Mael) are still popular in Europe, apparently. Still putting albums out and trying new musical ideas. Not always my cup of tea, especially the a-capella stuff. But, if we all had the exact musical tastes (or ineradicable memories!) this would be one very boring place.
They are Jews, so that ‘stache is mildly significant.
Hey, speaking of a-cappella, what about The Bobs?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bobs_(album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee8ZGyvrH8w
I saw this now-defunct vocal ensemble live in ’85 or ’86. Hysterical (and good). MORE vids:

They did Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” when I saw them live, but I can’t find it.

Here is yet another one hit wonder from the 80’s,if you are not angry/enraged just give this a listen, when done you will be homicidal!Damn,a lot of shit music one hit wonders from the 80′!
This poor cat listening to this garbage!
Fuck…..,just shoot me now!this I believe tops the list for bad one hit wonders!
Seriously, does it get any worse then this drivel!
Imagine you took these songs and made a loop tape you could get confessions out of the most hardened folks with torture like this!
This poor cat is saying,”James, your drunk, get the fuck up and change the radio station pronto!”
Always showing us your pussy an’ rubbin’ it ‘n’ shit.
sad attempt on my part to post again…

The best Boston band of the 80’s ‘Til Tuesday!!
Aimee had a great voice but for 80’s Boston bands lets not forget John Butcher Axis!
Boston:

Oh,Boston band in 80’s,The Pixies, this tune is a classic and can easily relate to it!
Ah, Boston in the 80’s at the RAT.
.
Shit! Thank you! Forgot those folks.
Hey – Throwing Muses.
Hey Rockwell….nobody’s watching you. They might be listing for the sound of your cousin Michael’s voice in the song, but nobody is watching you.
And I always liked the original German version better. Something about a woman singing in German….sounds a bit like a subtle orgasm every now and then. And this version actually has closeups of her singing with that pretty face, etc.
“Subtle orgasm” = “lite beer”
Not giving thumbs up or down, just adding.
Did someone say Rick James?
I’m Rick James bitch.
His last name wasn’t bitch, impostor.
I think this cover of Norman Greenbaum’s “SPIRIT IN THE SKY”, as performed by Doctor and the Medics is a version that will stand the test of time. I absolutely respect how much effort the production designers expended to avoid the suggestive checkerboard patterns on all dancefloors.
I will eat my hat if one of you guys and gals can convince me that Sigue Sigue Sputnik is NOT a one-hit wonder in our loose definition in this thread!
Does Sigue Sigue Sputnik count as a one-hit wonder?
– Ooze
No, a zero hit wonder.
I remember this track was in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
I think that Norman Greenbaum’s classic, “Spirit in the Sky” is improved upon by this cover by The Doctor & The Medics. I particularly appreciate how this video shows absolutely zero “checkerboard” patterns.

Norman Greenbaum’s classic, “Spirit in the Sky”, covered by Doctor & the Medics. I applaud the creator of this video for avoiding all “checkerboard” visuals.

Not a chance he is gay.
That shirt/dress pretty boy’s wearing shows that the trans thing has been brewing for at least half a century.
Somewhat off-topic, but tangentially related, here’s a little honey who may be a hit someday:
Her mates aren’t bad, either:
Best one-hit wonder, EVER:

Great song, cheesebag video. Enjoy!
Great 80’s band and PROOF Lady Gaga Owes Dale Bozio some cash for stealing her act.
Walking in LA too. Great band, great outfit.
I was a young kid (7) at the start of the 80s and smart ass punk at the end of the 80s remember all but one of songs you listed. Thanks for the trip down memory road admin.
Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks any part of your punk evolution?
My older brother had a couple of the flag black cassettes and my best friend LIKED the circle jerks we also liked S.O.D and then M.O.D.
As a 49 yr old Gen-X’r and latchkey kid I fondly remember every single one of these videos. As soon as I got home after school the TV was turned on and tuned to MTV, and there it stayed for the next 3 hours or so until my parents got home. Good times.
MTV first video played
Haha cheesy.
Not only do I remember Autograph, the local rock station DC101 played a custom version of it, in which “DC101” was inserted into the lyrics. Howard Stern, Greaseman, other personalities back in their heyday. I still have cassette tapes with some of their old antics.

Out where the river broke
The bloodwood and the desert oak
Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in 45 degrees
The time has come
To say fair’s fair
To pay the rent
To pay our share
The time has come
A fact’s a fact
It belongs to them
Let’s give it back
How can we dance
When our earth is turning?
How do we sleep
While our beds are burning?
How can we dance

While our beds are burning?

From Kintore East to Yuendemu
The western desert lives and breathes

About 6 of ’em are played 2 or 3 times a day on the classic rock station they listen
to in the shop I used to work at. It really sucked, especially the Georgia Satellites.
