It is my sincere desire to provide readers of this site with the best unbiased information available, and a forum where it can be discussed openly, as our Founders intended. But it is not easy nor inexpensive to do so, especially when those who wish to prevent us from making the truth known, attack us without mercy on all fronts on a daily basis. So each time you visit the site, I would ask that you consider the value that you receive and have received from The Burning Platform and the community of which you are a vital part. I can't do it all alone, and I need your help and support to keep it alive. Please consider contributing an amount commensurate to the value that you receive from this site and community, or even by becoming a sustaining supporter through periodic contributions. I enjoy his observations, but like everyone else in the post-modern era, he wants his cake (and eats it too).
If you can’t get into your home without electricity, you made a poor decision in selecting your place of residence. If the electric goes out, my front door still opens. The idea that you have to depend on an elevator to get home is beyond ridiculous.
People are going to have to get their heads around one of two possible futures; complete dependency on the systems as they currently exist and by extension the folks that provide those systems, or independence from it and a radically lowered standard of living.
You can’t have both. That world is over and while it was an awesome time to be alive, it sowed the seeds of its own destruction.
Prepare ye.
I think he’s done a pretty good job of being a “accidental war correspondent” but sometimes his sardonic tone grates.
This commentary should help some people get read to wrap their heads around what’s happening … it is time to put one’s head on a swivel in order to keep it on your shoulders.
Gonzola provides insight from a better viewpoint than I have… he also has connections to the more research-minded team of The Duran, whose respect for him elevates him in my eyes. He can’t be a dirtbag if they like him, I figure.
I’ve been wrong before.
THANK YOU HSF.
Less is more!!!
Cities are not your friends.
What is evident to most here on TBP is that most city people are not prepared for any real emergencies. They simply go about their day completely ignorant of their surroundings and take no considerations for any eventuality that could disrupt their world.
They seriously plan for nothing and ‘trust’ the govt will take care of everything for them. Life will go on with maybe a little more inconveniences to endure. Little do they know or even consider, that in any REAL emergency, they along with several tens or hundreds of thousands of people will all be clamoring for the same meager amount of resources available.
Cities consume the self absorbed
And the city has been rapidly moved into still-civilized exurbs for years now.

Those unprepared are dying on their knees. Bagging water from the downpipe? You were not prepared. Then you are going to crawl up your apartment building past 100’s of others with bottles full of water? Face death without flinching or begging. Easier said than done. This person is ^ groveling. Next stop uploaded.
Water systems (fresh water, sewage) rely on continuous power, too.

The American taxpayer is on the hook for this war and the others coming up… we’ve been had.
“we’ve been had.”
Well. The First attempt in The New World didn’t go so smoothly…

One of the most important things to have is a handcrank generator and battery operated am/fm and shortwave radio reciever
I can’t decide from reviews (and budget) which to get.
They’re all shit in my experience. You better be a wizard with antenna arrays if you wanna hear much of anything.
Practice indoor winter camping.
Wood, coal, propane, kerosene heater and stove top.
Extreme cold weather sleeping bags.
Oil lamps and candles.
Surface water filters.
Portable radio and flashlights.
Books, boardgames, cards
He made a good point about water pipes below freezing.
Unless properly evacuated they burst.
I have found the best test to truly experience living with no power is to have a place that was built around being off the grid. We have a family camp way off the beaten path where no power lines are to be found. Outside of no power, there are also no phone lines or indoor plumbing. There is a hand pump outside to collect water and an outhouse to take care of business. Only source of heat is with wood, which also can be used to cook.
We did install a 1000w solar system with deep cell battery storage and 120v inverter. There is also a generator located onsite for anything that is demanding of power. I enjoy going and staying a night up there. In the summer I won’t even bother using the solar to experience the joys of real off-grid living. I think I could survive at a place like that no problem. Long term off-grid living does have its challenges though. You can’t exactly run a refrigerator or freezer. We thought about propane fridge, but wanted to attempt to keep it off-grid as much as possible.
“We thought about propane fridge,”
Find a couple of old campers somewhere, there’s your fridge. Not too difficult to rig something up. May as well turn them upside down for a few days when you get them to where they are going. Right side up for a few before You fire them.
Anyone who has never lived off grid will be astonished at how GOOD it is to have even a hundred watts of power. A couple LED light bulbs are wonderful. An electric fan during the summer is LUXURY!
He’s shocked how much his life depends on electricity? If you haven’t figured out by now that your whole quality of life, and the modernity in general, depends on a constant flow of massive amounts of energy, there may not be much hope for you. The energy goes away, everything around you disappears or becomes irrelevant to maintaining your life. Having a couple flashlights as your backup plan is probably not going to cut it.
