Great songs all. Thanks.
The songs from our childhoods seem to touch our Souls. I even like the stuff that my parents listened too from the 1930’s and 40’s.
Yes, my mom got me hooked on country back then, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells. I grew up in the 60’s and early 70’s, the heyday of rock and roll. Today I don’t care for where rock and country have gone today, and I have no use for rap or Hip-hop. What I have found is Blues music, which is still great music. I still listen to the old stuff, but my main stay is now Blues.
Face it — we boomers just happened to live in the time of the greatest rock music ever … and this list (among others) proves it … great songs from great performers.
But there are some more that are missing …
Good Vibrations – The Beach Boys – one of the ‘anthems’, as I denote them …
Eight Miles High – The Byrds – one of the great groups of the era — Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Chris Hillman …

Nancy Sinatra in a ‘mini skirt’ girls dancing behind her in short short skirts were called ‘go go girls’
I was in third grade just learning to appreciate nice looking ladies.
I was a 3rd grader in 1966 also. She was hot before we knew what hot was.
Another one from Nancy released late ’66
Rest of Revolver:
Howz about this little ditty played and covered way too many times!
Every high school band I ever heard covered Gloria, Satisfaction, Good Vibrations and House of the Rising Sun
I was in 5 ot 6 of them and never covered any of those.
You’re giving away your age. You covered Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water. Didn’t you?
And:
mid to late 60’s? That is when I was going to sock hops
According to the Wikipedier, the #2 song of 1966 was “96 Tears” by Question Mark and the Mysterians

Paint it Black by the Stones is OK, although Jagger is such a horrible singer. (He’s OK on Wild Horses, Angie & Winter). 1966 had a lot of pretty lame songs according to that list.
I like this one.
#10 song that year:
While not a fan Isk upvoted you to neg the down vote!
Another memorable 66 “classic”:
Really? No Elvis?
Not much I could find from 66. The couple I found were a soundtrack song and a re-record of someone else’s. Didn’t really care for them, but I prefer his more “rock” hits rather than slow balads.
I was thoroughly exposed to all these songs by my older sisters who were inveterate record collectors
and who invited all their friends over to listening parties anytime a new Beatles/Stones/ Kinks/Who record came out, and the local DJ down the street gave them free promo records to fill in the pop/R&B side.
Thx for the trip down memory lane.
All of the bands that played the sock hops knew this one and the drummers loved trying to impress the crowd.
From the Whiskey A Go-Go
There were so many good songs in 66. Here are a couple of my favourites:

Awesome. Saw Johnny Rivers at the AK state fair in 1983 or 1984. He was awesome. An Idaho redneck guy was drunk and dancing with all the hippie girls. He later became a good friend.
Not ’66 . but still pretty good cover of Silent Night.
I like the humorous side of you, Gordon.
I’ve seen both of these recently before.
That howlin’ fleabag seems like an irritation,
if its behavior is a common occurrence.
That was ssooo mooving, I had tears rolling down my face. A real mood lightner.
I was 15, and the pussy was so close and so far away. So. Cal. was still the Golden State, the future was so bright. Then military 69′-73, then a different So. Cal./reality. Thanks for the poignant memories.
Eve of Destruction, Barry Mc Guire. Might of been 1965.
It was from ’65 .
Motown yay. Also love Paint it Black and Summer in the City. So many.
