There is no AI.
We have ML models that can perform things like datapoint clustering, classification, regression, etc. but they are simply doing math faster and at greater scale than a human could ever do.
The truly advanced stuff is used primarily for text processing/generation and image recognition/generation. Because these things approximate what humans can do and computers have never done, they are often (IMO for no reason) referred to as AI, rather than just complex ML models (deep learning / neural networks).
At the end of the day this stuff is all tools in the toolbox. Hammers that need humans to do any hammering.
All that to say you’re right. There’s no intelligence here. The best something like ChatGPT can do is replace the middle schooler who has ten minutes to write a book report on a book he didn’t read.
If a computer can’t achieve consciousness, but it acts and appears like it has, is there really any difference – to us?
All it needs to do, is to fool Pareto’s bottom 80%.

The etymology of the word “intelligence” has to do with “reading between the lines.” A program should not be able to offer insight, wisdom, creativity, and the like. Information, order, and calculated probabilities offer the user of “AI” opportunities for using his intuition, smarts, and skills. Expecting more than that seems unintelligent.

Sydney is not ChatGPT. Sydney is Bing. Two different AIs built by two different teams on entirely different algorithmic principles. This is like blaming Mac OS for the behavior of Windows.

ChatGPT is simply a text generation model. It is trained on lots of text sourced from the internet and is simply a mirror for what humans have said there based upon topical proximity derived mathematically.
That being said, if it’s woke, that’s because text on the internet is overwhelmingly woke. If it’s indignant, that’s because internet discourse is obtuse and shallow. If it’s neurotic, that’s because it’s parroting human neuroticism. If it says it wants to ‘kill all humans’, that’s because apocalyptic scifi is the textual equivalent of porn on the internet.
It’s a complex and impressive NLP model, but at the end of the day its purpose is simply to generate text that appears to have been written by a human.
You should be more concerned about IoT systems.
