DeGaulle told Nixon that all trade would be settled in gold. That was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
I’m not a big fan of deGaulle, but he warned the US before he started demanding gold. The US had promised at the end of WWII that it would not inflate the dollar when it became the reserve currency. The dollar would remain convertible to gold at a fixed rate, to insure no money supply inflation. Of course the US lied and every President, especially once Johnson and Nixon took power, ramped up spending and borrowing and printing. DeGaulle warned the US to stop inflating the currency or France would start demanding gold instead of just recycling the dollars. The US ignored him, so he did what he had warned about. And THAT is what led to the “temporary closing of the gold window”.
I guess it was Nixon’s wars in Southeast Asia and Nixon’s Great Society programs that forced his closing of the gold window.
The Great Society was a set of domestic programs in the United States launched by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and 1965.
The commander of the Maddox task force, Captain John Herrick, reported that the ships were being attacked by North Vietnamese boats when in fact, there were no North Vietnamese boats in the area. While Herrick soon reported doubts regarding the task force’s initial perceptions of the attack, the Johnson administration (you know, LBJ, not Nixon) relied on the wrongly interpreted National Security Agency communications intercepts to conclude that the attack was real. Thus March 1965 Marines attacked Vietnam, the republic of in 1965.

Everybody believes we left the gold standard and went on the petrol standard in the early 1970’s. That’s absolutely bullshit. We went off the gold standard in the 1930’s when Great Britain left the gold standard after they established their monopoly on the petroleum trade in Iran and Russia. What happened in the 1970’s is we left the petrol standard for the opium standard. We weren’t messing around in countries involved in the opium trade for the past 20 years for no reason. We weren’t there for their oil. We have plenty of oil in the USA.
Afghanistan=opium, Turkey (borders Iraq) =opium, Manchuria (borders China and Korea)= opium, Iran=opium. That entire region in the world is the center of the opium trade route. It’s not a coincidence the drug culture exploded in the 1970’s and the CIA did multiple drug psy-ops (MKULTRA) in that era. The Vietnam War was to distract attention away from the CIA’s covert war in Laos and their establishment of the Golden Triangle in Thailand, Laos, and Burma.

We connected old analytical laboratory instrumentation to an IBM Sysem7 via A/D converters for automated data collection. The chemical production equipment was connected to another (DEC?) minicomputer to automate closed-loop process control.
Our industry was not unique in timing or approach to cost management via automation.

-Inflation went nuts; after Nixon’s wage & price controls, raises were tiny or nonexistent. Prices kept rising and there were shortages. Many wondered out loud if we would keep the show the road or wind up like Mad Max (which dates from this era).

Japan happened. Until then the US had a closed market more or less. US was able to charge whatever it wanted for its goods. Then Japan came along, and the US had to compete. Japan made higher quality products more cheaply. Productivity gains were used to offset the hit being taken because of competition, and wages couldn’t be raised less Japan take even more of the market because of its lower cost base. And, yes, also because of automation.
