Homelessness in the US at All-Time High

Guest Post by Martin Armstrong

The housing crisis has become a massive issue in America. People with decent jobs are unable to afford housing, and those who were already down and out have little chance of survival. Then we poured the migrant crisis on top of the fire and have created a situation that is turning America into a second-world nation. Not so coincidentally, most of the homeless population lives in blue cities. The US spent over $51 billion on the homeless crisis last year, but where has the money gone?

Homelessness in the US has spiked by 65% since 2016! The Annual Homelessness Assessment Report said it is common for half a million people to be experiencing homelessness on any given night. The data is not in for 2023 when the migrant crisis really took hold after title 42 came to an end, so these figures I will present are nothing compared to our current reality in 2023. For every 10,000 Americans, 18 do not have a home. Around 72% are single adults, but an alarming 28% are families living with children. Five percent of the homeless population are unaccompanied youth under 25. Our veterans compose 6% of the homeless population as well.

Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders have the highest rate of homelessness with 121 out of every 10,000 people living in crisis. The Black community has a disproportionate amount of homeless too with 48.2 of every 10,000 experiencing homelessness. Native Americans come in at a close third with 44.9 out of every 10,000 having no place to call home. Sixty-eight percent of all homeless individuals are male.

The US Federal government spent over $51 billion to combat the homeless crisis in 2022, but then our government took measures to worsen the matter, and economic conditions have made it nearly impossible for those with nothing to find shelter. The National Alliance to End Homelessness estimates that a chronically homeless person will cost the taxpayers an average of $35,578 per year. Yet, where is this money going? When the migrants came through, we managed to find housing and convert buildings into temporary shelters until cities became overrun and it was impossible to manage — the federal bill for homelessness in FY22-23 will be astonishing.

As of March 2022, these cities saw the largest populations of unhoused individuals:

  • Los Angeles City & County 65,111
  • New York City 61,840
  • Seattle/King County 13,368
  • San Jose/Santa Clara City & County 10,028
  • Oakland, Berkeley/Alameda County 9,747
  • Sacramento City & County 9,278
  • Phoenix, Mesa/Maricopa County 9,026
  • San Diego City and County 8,427
  • San Francisco 7,754
  • Metropolitan Denver 6,884

We can see a pattern here, given that these are blue cities. Politicians touted many of these areas as “sanctuary cities” and encouraged tens of thousands of people to use the last of their resources to relocate there. And now, these people have nowhere to stay and no resources to leave. Promising sanctuary should have been a crime in itself. Criminalizing homelessness will not solve the solution and will only further burden the taxpayers. Anyone living in a major American city will tell you first-hand that the number of unhoused people has exploded in the past year. This is a SERIOUS and growing problem that is not being addressed. The government is continually throwing more money at the problem, but it is only worsening.

Fentanyl + Meth = homeless. About 90% of the homeless are so addicted they can’t do anything but consume drugs 24-7. Giving them housing solves the wrong problem –

just because the trailer park you live in has a meth issue this does not mean the entire population has one, your projecting your short comings on others. now image where you spend so much of your income on shelter that a loss if income means a loss of shelter in short order.. how many millions set up for evictions and bankruptcy over the rent freeze and costs so large few have to means to retain their places of residence. think before posting ignorant remarks but for the grace of god go thee…

Someone I know had a discussion the other day with the sales agent for a typical large new housing development in the LA basin. When the sales agent was asked how sales were going, the answer was it was already almost completely sold out. The typical buyers? Chinese investors.

Soapless, toothless and shiftless bums are at an all time high.

FIFY.

At the height of the depression there weren’t bums.
There were people desperately searching for work.
BIG difference. My grandmother in Salina KS had them show up
at the BACK door asking for any kind of work for some food.
She and my grandfather were about broke too but always had them fix something that didn’t need fixing as she made them a sandwich so they kept their dignity. See any dignity evinced by the bums today
with their drugs, stolen bikes, and Obama sail foams today?
Fuck ’em all.

Hey a-hole, Martin is correct. Many people may become homeless, or should I say “home challenged” due to the factors you cite. However, once on the street, drugs (meth and fentanyl) are so plentiful that most who become homeless get addicted. Once addicted, they are fucked. They can no longer think straight because the new industrial meth screws up their minds. Then they move up to fentanyl for a stronger high and then they are really fucked and on the way to exiting life altogether.

Don’t believe me, come visit my fine city and take a walk thru downtown where the homeless and tents are everywhere. Open drug use is the norm and tinfoil and needles litter the ground. In our legal drug-land called Oregon, cops spend all their time administering Narcan to those who OD at $100 of taxpayer money per dose.

So a-hole, maybe you should get out of your YUPPIE high rise apartment more often to see reality.

I’ll go further, down-voters be damned .. Fentanyl + Meth = chemical warfare by China.
The Army is probably the right tool to use in a war. The Army probably has enough tents for housing and sufficient manpower to roundup half a million addicts and make them sober up for a few weeks. After a few weeks it is possible some of the addicts would have something like free will about using. Think of these addicts as victims of a war with China that DC does not care about.

People with a brain can make choices, get another job, trucking: my nephew lost a job then started trucking, most companies pay to learn ( gear shifting, maintenence on the road, etc ) decent pay, there is no excuse unless a person has a bad driving record. Electricians in my area make about $52K per year; welders, about $40K. I did electrical work for a while and left for something more profitable that would actually allow me to keep a roof over my head. Unless you are scaled Union with many years of experience, the skilled trades do not pay nearly as much as you think.

If that were true, the answer to suppress the drug problem would be to NOT bite the apple. I don’t see anyone holding a gun to drug users heads. They are consuming them of their own volition. My grocer promotes a HUGE inventory of alcohol and offers substantial promotional deals for volume purchases. I never buy it because I choose not to pollute my body but many others do. You can’t blame anyone else except the person who says yes to it. If you’re weak, you will fall prey to sin. Where there is no market for sin, the tempter will go elsewhere. Certainly each one of these “losers” was fully apprised of the long term affects of drugs and alcohol.

Or were they tricked by the system?
Surely the system never glorifies drugs and alcohol in their media products.

Never blame the people, making, shipping and selling the toxic drugs/alcohol.

I do not know of any drunks who produce alcohol on any serious level.
I also do not know any drug addicts who produce their own heroin, meth, fentanyl etc

Nope.
Be like every other ignorant fucknut douche and blame the victims of the drug and alcohol industry for their problems, while you give those who continue to manufacture and profit off this shit, a free pass.

Martin,
you said, 90% of homeless are meth and fentanyl addicts? Where are you getting your stats from? If they’re taking fentanyl, they’re dead. FYI, I work with the homeless. I’d say most I work with are homeless for the first time do to loss of their job, because they were wise to refuse the GM injections. This unconstitutional mandate, led many homeless because without gainful employment, they couldn’t pay their mortgage, bills, insurance, ect. Please post a link to your stats. Martin, thank you.

And look into statistics for how many people who live in houses that have drug, alcohol, gambling, and other addictions. And mental illness.
You know the old saying, People who live in glass houses… shouldn’t throw stones at the homeless.
I agree with most on this story. However you forgot to mention the early release of criminals that adds to the mix. and your also forgot to mention the families that lost their home due to fires, flooding, and loss of income.
I believe the reason the so called red states have less homeless, is because they are shurking their responsibility to help their own homeless population. Instead they run them out, persecute them from city to city, until they cross into the next state. And these are the so called Christians who do this, forgetting Christ Je’sus, and the Disciples were also homeless. Matthew 8:20 kjv and Matthew 4:18-20 kjv
Where does all the money allocated to the homeless go to? there’s no accountability for what the agencies do with the money that’s suppost to be to help the homeless. like Hopesource in Ellensburg, that bought with the money designated for homeless families two Mercedes Bens Sprinter vans for their “homeless outreach”.
And Hopesource could have bought the old motel 6 (currently closed), to refurbish into low income housing. But instead bought a train station to move themselves into (The office they had before was sufficient, again, prodigious use of tax payer money). New phones, new systems, new vans, but still a lot of homeless still without help. For some reason a 32ft projector screen was put into the train station as well.
I’ll give Hopesource credit for building low income apartments, but the buildings lack heating and air conditioning, and have mold. And if something in the unit breaks, managment is no where to be found. Otherwise, It’s unlivable.
I Could name other agencies, but this would take all day.

I spent 1998 living in a van in San Diego County. I estimate there were over 10,000 homeless people living in vehicles in San Diego then.

I think most homeless and hungry people should be asked what choices they made that resulted in them being homeless and hungry. Darwin is solving the problem.

For many of them, the choice was made by the State. They closed the mental hospitals and dumped the mentally unhinged on the street. Obviously they were not taking any new crazies off the street either.

I am sure many are people fucked over by Covidiocy taking their jobs too.

There are going to be many stories of downfall, some self inflicted, some not.

That’s dick head thinking. I usually expect more from you than that. And, no, I’m not your down voter. I simply disagree. I realize you’re not alone in your thinking. Being among the majority does not make one right.

For most homeless, it is a lifestyle choice. They are free to make that choice, but I will be damned if I am going to subsidize it. Funny how you never had these problems back when there were vagrancy laws.

Imagine if the United States didn’t have more than 60,000,000 illegal aliens living here — often off the backs of US Citizens and Taxpayers … living in our houses … overflowing our hospitals … destroying everything they touch with crime … encroaching on our Freedoms and Liberties … destroying our National Sovereignty by their very presence …

I watched a youtube the other day of the ever increasing homeless Chinese sleeping rough on the streets. The Chinese turn fire hoses on them or blast them with fire extinguisher foam. They also arrest them for living on the streets and or disappear them.

Honestly, it is sad and gut wrenching that the young Chinese sleeping rough are not drug addicts, drunks or mentally ill as the US version. They are generally college educated, many hide the fact that they are homeless because of the dishonor their family would suffer.

The single men need to get employment, learn a trade no excuse to be a bum. Vets can get paid for tuition @ trade schools (incl living expenses) like my husband and other vets we know, earning a decent income and now retired. Those w/ children living on the streets need to turn their kids over to willing relatives, or group homes and cps for adoption, as they are unfit to breed then refusing to take care of their kids.

Turn them over to CPS.
Yeah, we had a neighbor druggy whose toddler son was placed in cps.
Soon the little guy had both his arms and legs broken by his “government approved safe foster family”.
Yeah, no.
CPS seems to operate as a child trafficking ring.

Actually it is real estate price inflation and no raises in pay which leads to homelessness. I know, I am homeless and I don’t drink, smoke or do drugs and when there are stairs to do I got a job. It just doesn’t pay enough to make a difference. Wages are 60 years out of date.
