Math disaster in college: Would-be STEM majors can’t add 1/2 + 1/3
After a year of remote algebra, Diego Fonseca struggled with advanced algebra. Despite a week at George Mason University’s Math Boot Camp, the would-be computer science major failed the math placement test to qualify for calculus four times. He didn’t know the basics.
Across the country, more students are placing into pre-college math, reports AP’s Collin Binkley. “At many universities, engineering and biology majors are struggling to grasp fractions and exponents.”
At George Mason in Northern Virginia, fewer would-be STEM majors are getting into calculus and more are failing, he writes.
“We’re talking about college-level pre-calculus and calculus classes, and students cannot even add one-half and one-third,” said Maria Emelianenko, chair of George Mason’s math department.
I went into electronics engineering in ’75. Tough to get a job my entire career. And they had already started the ‘need women in engineering’ chant.
It may be ‘desired’ by some parties, but actual firms, government, colleges, etc all took a long time to decide to offer, so I was never the ‘first choice.’ The pattern was obvious. I’ve worked a lot of interesting places. IBM, FAA, Universities, USPS, and tech/trade schools. Maintaining at IBM, afterwards, teaching electronics and automation (computer controlled) equipment to technicians and engineers.
Raised in a family of teachers, I’ve noted that the first time you have any sort of problem in any math course with the teacher, that is the end of the interest in math. Poor teaching skills or conflict with the teacher, or simply not ‘getting it’ and not finding an ‘ally’ to help through the struggle to ‘get it.’
Also, “They” may want women in STEM, but precious few of those areas have people in them that want to work with women. For a multitude of reasons. The only ones that want to work with women are confident married men. The rest want something else entirely. I laughed at the Ford woman crying at getting felt up while drunk at a pool party. Really, how weak. And about 90% of MeToo ‘victims.’ Pikers. It was a daily running battle, for years, for me. I could stop the badgering, but I couldn’t stop the retaliation, if they were bent that way.
I don’t recommend any woman to work in any shop as ‘the first.’ It’s brutal. If you don’t ‘go along, to get along,’ you’ll repeat my constant job hunts about every 8 years or so. There would always be that one toady who would find a way to get me OUT through false accusations in the right ear because I didn’t ‘pay toll’ to play in his sandbox. I wish I had worked in all ‘surveilled’ spaces, just to protect myself. HA. Wishful thinking. At gov shops, it was simply more ‘sneaky.’ Never, ever, go drinking with coworkers without a spouse. Period.
I’ve pulled away from the food window, after paying, because of the amount of hardware in faces. Can’t imagine how much bacteria the guy was shedding. If that was who was at the window, what does the cook look like? EEWWW
But an it? I haven’t had that one.

One of our extended family’s females is a pro socialist USC coed. She was explaining the benefits of socialism during a recent family bbq. I opined that it would benefit her since she was largely NON-productive.
