International Man: What is a windfall profits tax?

It seems like a vague and arbitrary concept politicians use to justify taking more wealth from people they don’t like.

Doug Casey: That’s quite correct.

It’s defined as the taking of “unusual and unearned” or “exploitative” profits.

The application of a windfall profits tax always has to do with the concept of “fair.” Whenever you see the word fair being used, be on alert. “Fair” is among the most dangerous words in the English language.

Everybody approves of the idea of fairness in theory, in the abstract. But in practice, it’s a chimera, a will o’ wisp. Individuals of good will try to treat others fairly, i.e., with honor and justice; it’s a question of doing what you say you’ll do and not aggressing against other persons or their property. But the concept of “fair” usually connotes a sense of forced division of spoils. At the level of government, where coercion is overtly or tacitly in the picture, fairness tends to be no more than a political buzzword. They manufacture artificial notions of “fair” profits, “fair” prices, a “fair” wage, “fair” housing, and the like. These are arbitrary and pernicious concepts that tend to rationalize envy. This is entirely apart from the fact that taxes—the forceful taking of another’s property under cover of the law—are themselves immoral. But that’s a subject for another day.

Hispanic Voters Trending Red

For the last several presidential election cycles, media messaging has been consistent: candidates who captures the Hispanic vote will win. The suggestion, often unstated, was that GOP candidates need to promote an illegal alien amnesty, pledge to curtail interior enforcement and promote expanded immigration. In 2022, however, Hispanics could indeed hold the key to a GOP victory, but not because they endorse amnesty. Hispanics, realizing that an open border creates job competition, classroom chaos and disrupts their communities, oppose President Biden’s immigration agenda.

The Hispanic shift toward Republicans has been slowly, but steadily building. In 2004 and 2016, Republican Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump scored well among Hispanics, 40 percent and 38 percent, respectively. Trump’s 2020 total was almost 10 points higher than his 2016 tally. But in the 20 months since Biden’s inauguration, the White House’s open borders agenda has accelerated the Hispanic shift to the GOP. Remember that Hispanics who vote are U.S. citizens, and their hopes and concerns are largely identical to other Americans.

The Top 3 Outcomes As the Elites Try To Reset the International Monetary System

It’s self-evident the fiat currency system centered on the US dollar is self-destructing at an alarming rate.

After more than 50 years, it’s long past the end of its shelf-life, like a carton of spoiled milk.

Even the elites running the system can see that and are openly talking about what they’d like to see come next.

That’s why there’s all this talk about a “reset” as the current international monetary system falters.

The way I see it, there are three possible outcomes.

Outcome #1: Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) and the International Monetary Fund’s Special Drawing Rights (SDR) replacing the US dollar as the world’s new reserve currency. This is the elites’ preferred outcome.

Outcome #2: A reluctant re-monetization of gold. Central bankers don’t want to go back to gold, but they will have no choice if their fiat system collapses, forcing their hands.

Outcome #3: Bitcoin is the wild card. A Bitcoin standard could spontaneously emerge regardless of what the elite want. Bitcoin is an entirely new asset people are adopting as money because of its superior monetary properties, notably its total resistance to inflation. Yahoo Finance reports:

“Jerome Powell just warned that the US housing market needs a ‘difficult correction’ so that folks can afford homes again:

“Higher interest rates translate to bigger mortgage payments – not good news for the housing market. But cooling down housing prices is part of what needs to be done to bring inflation under control.”

…. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said, ‘….In the housing market (we probably) have to go through a correction to get back to that place.’

…. Those words might sound scary, especially to those who lived through the last financial crisis – where the housing market went through a very, very difficult correction.”

Getting off Big Tech: De-Googled Phone

In my previous post about the future of tech, I discussed my concerns about big tech, and some of the changes we could make as a society to remedy the trends. However, as a developer, I’m in the position of being able to do something about my individual situation right now. Even though it isn’t accessible to everyone yet, someone who isn’t afraid to tinker a bit with their devices can effectively remove their dependence on big-tech platforms right now.

In this post I’d like to discuss what I view as the most important step away from big tech—the phone. We’re going to explore how I replaced all proprietary Google code from my phone using LineageOS, and minimized the interactions with external Google services using microG and an Open Source ecosystem of apps.

Rather than breaking down every step and installation command to “de-Google” your phone, this post provides an overview to explore some of the concepts and explain the many choices you’ll have to make along the way—and the tradeoffs of those choices. Some of the choices I made may not be right for you, but my hope is that this will help demonstrate how all the pieces go together.

The Phone OS

Apple’s iOS

The two main phone operating systems available are iOS by Apple, and Android by Google. Of the two of them, Apple puts a high emphasis on external privacy, but you pretty much have to trust Apple because the code is almost entirely closed source; we don’t know exactly what data is sent from your phone to Apple. And even though Apple seems to be making good choices at the moment, and their business model focuses on selling products, not necessarily information, once your data is sent to Apple’s servers, you no longer have control over it in any concrete way. Any change in leadership, business ethics, or business model means that all bets are off; your data is already available to them to do with as they please. We can’t make decisions completely based on the present—we also need to consider the potential future. Data is Forever™.

The Chechen Republic, once a terrorist battleground bedeviling Russia, is now firmly in Russia’s camp [thanks to Putin!] and sent a visual post card to Ukraine and the West that the storm is coming for the Nazi sympathizers (if you look carefully at the 28 second mark you will see that the Chechens are carrying the U.S. Javelin Anti Tank Guided Missile captured from the Ukrainians, thanks to the generosity of the United States taxpayers):

Following the attack on the Crimea bridge, the entire Ukronazi Internet plus assorted supporters exploded in a supernova of joy and Schadenfreude: the much hated “Putin bridge” was finally down!  Hurray!!!

It was also funny to see that once the Ukronazis realized how stupid (and dangerous!) their proud claims that they were the ones who blew up the truck on the bridge, they decided to blame Putin.  So, as per our Ukronazi pals, Putin blew up the “Putin bridge” for some as of yet unnamed purpose, but most definitely an evil one.

Even more hilarious were the hardcore Banderistas à la Aristovich who were celebrating each Russian strike because “now the Russians have one less missile to use”.  Clearly, a war-winning mindset 🙂

Putin’s New Ukraine Commander Dubbed “General Armageddon” For Ruthless Track Record

“Russia and Russia’s commanders are worried about the state of their military machine,” the head of British intelligence agency GCHQ Jeremy Fleming, told BBC Radio on Tuesday. “We can see that desperation at many levels inside Russian society and inside the Russian military machine,” he described in an assessment which comes days after a big Russian military command shake-up.

Following the past weeks of a rapid roll-back of Russian positions in Ukraine’s east, President Vladimir Putin sacked two of his senior military commanders and appointed General Sergey Surovikin to lead the next the next phase of the war effort in Ukraine, which began with Monday’s major escalation in airstrikes on over a dozen cities, which was a response to the Kerch Bridge bombing.

Tulsi Gabbard is Right – The Democratic Party is a Cabal of Warmongers

Tulsi Gabbard, former representative for Hawaii’s second district, announced that she is fleeing the Democratic Party in a video that has made waves across the internet. The Democratic Party has radically transformed to “a cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness,” Gabbard said. The party has altered its views to such a far-left point that their ideals are no longer based in democracy.
