$8.5 Billion U.S. Counter Narcotics Effort in Afghanistan Boosts Opium Production

Via Judicial Watch

The U.S. government’s multi-billion-dollar effort to counter narcotics in Afghanistan is a humiliating failure that’s resulted in a huge increase in poppy cultivation and opium production. Despite the free-flow of American tax dollars to combat the crisis, opium production rose 43% in the Islamic nation, to an estimated 4,800 tons, and approximately 201,000 hectares of land are under poppy cultivation, representing a 10% increase in one year alone.

Uncle Sam’s embarrassing counter narcotics effort is part of a broader and costly failure involving the reconstruction of Afghanistan. More than $100 billion have been dedicated to help rebuild the war-torn country and much of it has been lost to waste, fraud and abuse not to mention corruption. The drug initiative is a recent example, documented by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) in a quarterly report to Congress. The document is painful to read because it goes on for 269 pages, but Judicial Watch created a link for the counter narcotics section, which is around 19 pages and includes informative charts, graphs and the latest available statistics.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

That’s funny. There was virtually no terrorism in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Libya prior to 2002. The war on terrorism implemented by Washington DC Neo-cons has sure done wonders – for the military industrial complex’ profits.

500 people have been murdered in Chicago this year, more than Los Angeles and New York combined. The number of homicides has hit a 20-year high and the city hasn’t experienced a single day without someone being murdered since February of last year. A BBC report on the violence in the Windy City compared the number of deaths there with U.S. war dead in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Orlando Killer’s Father “Knew Obama”? Schmoozed In Washington, Sought Afghan Presidency

Submitted by Mac Slavo via SHTFPlan.com,

How close was presumed killer Omar Mateen to the bizarre world of Washington politics?

Screen shot 2016-06-17 at 6.07.00 AM

Close enough to raise your hackles about what is really going on.

Mateen’s father, Seddique Mateen, apparently visits the Capitol frequently, take pictures in front of the State Department and White House press room, and likes to pose with Congressmen, especially from the Foreign Affairs Committee.

There are also rumors, though they are unconfirmed, that Seddique Mateen has also met with President Obama.

His activity at the State Department and Foreign Affairs Committee also suggest possible liaisons with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and current Secretary of State John Kerry, along with other U.S. politicians.

Picture of him were posted to his Facebook account:

I WONDER WHAT THESE COUNTRIES HAVE IN COMMON?

I wonder what these numbers looked like before we brought our brand of democracy to the Middle east by invading Iraq in 2003. Isn’t it funny the two countries we “liberated” have by far the most terrorist attacks today. Mission Accomplished!!!!

THIS IS WHY WE ARE BRINGING “FREEDOM” TO THE MIDDLE EAST

I can’t figure out why we are so concerned about the Middle East. Can you?

If we are swimming in shale oil and our future is driver-less electric cars, why are we so concerned about the Middle East?

After 15 years in Afghanistan, the opium crop is at record high levels. How could that be? I thought we were there to modernize and democratize their country. At least heroine in the U.S. is now cheaper than a happy meal at McDonalds.

We’ll start with the obvious: the number one export for many countries here is crude oil or related petroleum products. Middle Eastern countries made up a significant portion of global oil export revenues during 2015 with shipments valued at $325 billion or 41.3% of global crude oil exports.

Saudi Arabia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Iran, and Oman were all among the top 15 exporters of crude oil in 2015. Russia and Kazakhstan, countries on the Central Asian part of the map, were also members of that same group.

Regimes in the region found that there were many other corollary benefits from this economic might. Unrest could be stifled by rising wealth, and these countries would also have more influence than they otherwise would in global affairs. Saudi Arabia is a good example in both cases, though a major driver of Saudi influence has been slipping in recent years.

5 Stories the Media Missed While Obsessing over the #StarbucksRedCup

Guest Post by Claire Bernish

(ANTIMEDIA) U.S. Inc. — When billionaire presidential hopeful Donald Trump inexplicably decided this week that boycotting Starbucks over the ‘de-Christmas-ization’ of their ubiquitous red holiday coffee cup was somehow a matter of national importance, the internet exploded — and American mainstream media fanned the flames.

People from every conceivable walk of life suddenly found themselves with a reason to rise up against the establishment coffee chain and scream in indignation about this newly-neutral — and cheerlessly Grinch-ified — affront to humanity. As if this inane insanity over an innocuous paper cup weren’t an embarrassing enough commentary on the U.S.’ populace’ lack of priorities — by Wednesday morning, the corporatocracy ever-so nobly answered the outrage: Dunkin’ Donuts unveiled its decidedly cheerful, appropriately Christmas-ized version of its holiday cup.

Yes, indeed. Starbucks’ apparent war on Christmas has now fully morphed into a de facto corporate Battle of the Paper Cups. People immediately responded by declaring their undying allegiance to either Team Grinch or Team Santa, conveniently ignoring the fact that these mega-corporations just figured out their most lucrative holiday marketing strategies — weeks before Thanksgiving even crossed people’s minds.

But the passion these warring coffee cup factions have managed to muster is indisputably misplaced, especially considering the bevy of pertinent issues that directly affect us all and are inherently more deserving of outrage. Though the month isn’t yet halfway behind us, there are already myriad concerns in need of your immediate attention — and none have anything whatsoever to do with a commercialized holiday that’s still well over a month away.

Here are five things exponentially more deserving of your indignation than a paper cup — no matter its design (or lack thereof):

1. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)

OBAMA: “DID I DO THAT?”

A hospital in the Afghan city of Kunduz has been hit and partially destroyed in an overnight ‘aerial attack’ that killed at least nine Medecins Sans Frontieres staff. NATO has admitted a US airstrike may have caused accidental ‘collateral damage.’ FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES: http://on.rt.com/6szb

US Bombs Afghanistan Hospital, Kills 9 Civilians, Injures 37; Tosses It Off As “Collateral Damage”

Tyler Durden's picture

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for US foreign policy, or for the credibility of the US state department to slide further, it got much worse.

Less than a day after US ambassador to the UN, uber-warhawk Samantha Power informed Russia of the latest US foreign policy stance by tweeter, when she called “on Russia to immediately cease attacks on Syrian opposition and civilians” in the latest desperate attempt to halt the Russian campaign against US-created ISIS which may wipe out the terrorist threat in just a few short days, it was the US itself which admitted that early on Saturday the US airforce bombed an Afghan hospital run by the medical aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors without Borders, in the Afghan city of Kunduz in an air strike that killed at least nine people and wounded 37.

As the Executive Director, of Doctors without Borders Jason Cone tweeted, “all parties 2 conflict, including in Kabul & Washington, were clearly informed of precise GPS Coordinates of @MSF facilities in Kunduz” and that the “precise location of @MSF Kunduz hospital communicated to all parties on multiple occasions over past months, including on 9/29.”

In other words, this morning’s US bombing was nothing more than another example of the utter incompetence, carelessness and disregard for innocent civilian lives that has become a staple hallmark of US foreign policy, something we have already witnessed repeatedly in the past 6 years as a result of the thousands of innocent people dead as part of US drone attacks, also known as “collateral damage.”

The attack, which started at 2:15am local time, took place when almost 200 patients and employees were in the hospital, the only one in the region that can deal with major injuries, Medecins Sans Frontieres said.

The aftermath of the US bombing:

The Worst President Ever Speaks to Wounded Vets (for a fee)

George W. Bush charged $100K for speech at wounded veterans event
By Mark Hensch

Former President George W. Bush billed a charity for wounded military veterans $100,000 in speaking fees three years ago, a new report says.

Bush charged Texas-based Helping a Hero that amount in 2012, according to ABC News.

The organization also provided Bush with private jet travel to Houston at a cost of $20,000.
Laura Bush, the former president’s wife, additionally pocketed $50,000 after appearing for the group in 2011, ABC reported.

Helping a Hero fundraises for homes that are specifically adapted for military veterans with lost limbs and other severe injuries, it said.

The group specifically helps those who fought in Afghanistan and Iraq.

THIS IS WHAT VICTORY IN AFGHANISTAN LOOKS LIKE

Loud explosions and gunfire have been heard in the parliament building in the Afghan capital, Kabul. Gunmen have stormed the lower house of parliament, with several blasts going off inside and in front of the building.

A Taliban spokesman has claimed responsibility for the attack on the parliament.

“We have launched an attack on parliament as there was an important gathering to introduce the country’s defense minister,” Reuters cited Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid as saying by telephone.

According to Kabul police spokesman Ebadullah Karimi, one Taliban fighter blew himself up in a car stuffed with explosives just outside the gates of the parliament compound, while six others took up positions nearby. All of them were killed in the two-hour firefight, while the attack left 21 people wounded, including four women, the police spokesman said.

Karimi confirmed that all the Afghan MPs and journalists were securely evacuated.

Lawmakers have criticized security agencies for not preventing the attack.

“It shows a big failure in the intelligence and security departments of the government,” MP Farhad Sediqi said.

The firefight between the militants and the parliament security force continued for more than 20 minutes before additional security forces came to their rescue, Rahmani told TOLOnews.

Rahmani also said that the parliament had been warned about a possible attack a few days ago.

A NATION OF BLITHERING IDIOTS

In separate polls, 75% of Americans think the sun goes around the earth, 85% don’t know who is buried in Grant’s tomb, 62% don’t know the name of the Vice President, and 98% plan on purchasing Kim Kardashian’s selfie book of ass shots.

If you asked the very same people who think we should send young men to the Middle East to fight a phantom terrorist organization that we created and armed to fight Assad what ISIS stands for, their expression would look like this:

These morons can’t even find Iraq on a map, and they want to send troops to die defending America from this existential threat of 20,000 Muslims with machetes and pickup trucks.

WTF do these people think troops on the ground will accomplish? Can you tell a friendly ragheaded Muslim from a terrorist ragheaded Muslim? Do idiot Americans think we won the Iraq or Afghanistan wars? It’s now been 13 years and Iraq and Afghanistan are more fucked up than ever. They are crawling with enemies now. There were no terrorists in Iraq in 2002. Now it has become a never ending quagmire of violence, terrorism, war and destruction. And it’s our fault.

And the blithering idiots in this country actually think we can defeat ISIS by sending more young men to die. And note which party truly loves war. I can’t wait for the next Republican President so we can go to war with even more countries.

According to a poll from YouGov, just over half of the American public would support a deployment of ground troops to fight ISIS. Democrats are divided on the question of ground troops while Republicans overwhelmingly support it. One of the primary reasons 53 percent of Americans support sending ground troops is that there are few alternatives.

Even though air strikes have stalled the momentum of ISIS militants in Iraq, less than one in four Americans believe the group can be defeated through air power alone. However, some good news has emerged from Northern Iraq over the past few days with news that government troops have forced ISIS combatants to flee Tikrit. A confident Iraqi military gaining momentum may well provide the American public with another alternative in the fight against ISIS.

I THOUGHT WE DEFEATED THE TALIBAN 10 YEARS AGO

Do you ever get the feeling we don’t really want to defeat the Taliban, ISIS, Al Qaeda or any of our other made up mortal enemies and threats to our democracy? If we ever defeated these existential threats the military industrial complex profits would plunge. We can’t have that happen to our warfare welfare empire of debt. I wonder how the families of the thousands of men who have died over the last thirteen years feel about the fact they died in vain to sustain the profits of corporate arms dealers.

Taliban militants carried out attack on prosecutor’s office in northern Afghanistan on Monday. The four-hour battle claimed at least 10 lives and 10 more were wounded in the shootout.

According to deputy governor of Kunduz province, the attack began when a suicide bomber blew up a car at the gate of the compound in the city of Kunduz.

Taliban spokesman claims the attack was carried out in response to recent death sentences handed to movement prisoners.

OBAMA PISSES AWAY $104 BILLION OF YOUR TAX DOLLARS IN AFGHANISTAN

With Eyes on ISIS, America’s $104B in Afghanistan Is Failing

By Brianna Ehley,
The Fiscal Times
September 15, 2014

While the eyes of the world are on Iraq and President Obama’s plans to defeat ISIS, the chief auditor in charge of overseeing the U.S. reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan has a warning to policy makers: Don’t forget about the other war-torn country that has already cost hundreds of billions of dollars and has serious problems with corruption and sustainability.

So far, the United States has poured more than $104 billion into Afghanistan reconstruction efforts – that’s more than all the money spent on reconstructing Europe after World War II. Much of that money, as auditors have noted, has been lost to waste, fraud and abuse. In 2010, SIGAR accountants told The Fiscal Times they could only account for less than 10 percent of that money.

That’s a shocking sum, especially since Congress has already authorized another $16 billion to spend in Afghanistan in the next few years. Still, despite spending an “unprecedented” amount of money to rebuild this country, it has no strategy to weed out corruption – leaving hundreds of billions of tax dollars vulnerable, John Sopko, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) told an audience at Georgetown University on Friday.

“This is astonishing, given that Afghanistan is one of the most corrupt countries in the world and a country that the United States is spending billions of dollars in,” the auditor said. He added that “things could get worse with the drawdown” that is scheduled for the end of 2015.

It’s not just corruption that threatens to derail all of the gains the U.S. has made in the country. Afghanistan, as Sopko noted, has a major problem with sustainability.

Right now, the United States and other international donors fund more than 60 percent of Afghanistan’s national budget of around $7.6 billion. Last year, for example, the Afghan government raised $2 billion in revenues; the rest came from foreign aid, mostly from the United States.

Sopko says in the next few years, the Afghan National Security Forces are going to require a force of 374,000 – at a cost of roughly $5 billion a year. “At these levels, if the Afghan government were to dedicate all of its domestic revenue toward sustaining the Afghan army and police, it still could only pay for about a third of the cost. Moreover, all other costs from paying civil servants to maintaining all roads, schools, hospitals and other non-military infrastructure would also have to come from international donors,” Sopko said. “The bottom line is, it appears we’ve created a government that the Afghans simply cannot afford.”

Sopko is known for being extremely critical of the government agencies involved in reconstruction efforts. He told the audience that the U.S. government has failed to address Afghanistan’s corruption and sustainability issues – which threaten to “jeopardize every gain” the U.S. has made. Meanwhile, he said the government’s counter-narcotics effort has also been a failure and if unaddressed could completely derail any progress the U.S. has made.

“The U.S. has already spent nearly $7.6 billion to combat the opium industry. Yet, by every conceivable metric, we’ve failed,” Sopko said.

Sopko and his team frequently churn out scathing reports highlighting the failures of the Defense and the State Departments in Afghanistan – and many of them receive a wide swath of media attention. This has unsurprisingly sparked some tension between the auditors and officials from the departments being audited who routinely have problems with the IG’s findings. They say that responding to IG reports “chews up countless hours, and that the inspector general’s work ultimately undermines the effort to build stronger civilian institutions here by creating the impression that the United States is simply pouring money down the well,” The New York Times reported.

Sopko says, “SIGAR welcomes publicity because publicity gives our reports and work impact in this town and in Kabul and around the world.” He added, “I admit, some ambassadors and generals and nameless, faceless bureaucrats and contractors are unhappy with the fact we get press coverage, even though our two-person press shop pales in comparison to the squadrons of PR people at Embassy Kabul, ISAF, or the Pentagon. But that is the cost of transparency and open government.”
