THE FATHER OF PR MAGGOTS

The quotes below are from the father of public relations maggots. Edward Bernays was hailed as a master of propaganda. He wrote a book called Propaganda in 1928. He was an FDR/Kennedy liberal that believed a chosen few could manipulate the masses to believe anything. The arrogance of this prick was beyond compehension. But guess what? He was right. The government, corporations and Madison Avenue slime have used his methods to manipulate and control the masses for decades, and it continues today.

His major coup, the one that really propelled him into fame in the late 1920s, was getting women to smoke. Women didn’t smoke in those days and he ran huge campaigns for Chesterfield. You know all the techniques—models and movie stars with cigarettes coming out of their mouths and that kind of thing. He got enormous praise for that. So he became a leading figure of the industry.

The master manipulator in his own words:

“It is sometimes possible to change the attitudes of millions but impossible to change the attitude of one man.”

“The best defense against propaganda: more propaganda.”

“Those who manipulate the unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. In almost every act of our lives whether in the sphere of politics or business in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires that control the public mind.”

“In theory, everybody buys the best and cheapest commodities offered to him on the market. In practice, if every one went around pricing, and chemically testing before purchasing, the dozens of soaps or fabrics or brands of bread which are for sale, economic life would become hopelessly jammed.”

“Propaganda is the executive arm of the invisible government.”

“A single factory, potentially capable of supplying a whole continent with its particular product, cannot afford to wait until the public asks for its product; it must maintain constant touch, through advertising and propaganda, with the vast public in order to assure itself the continuous demand which alone will make its costly plant profitable.”

“If we understand the mechanism and motives of the group mind, it is now possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without them knowing it.”

Too late. He was right. We bought into the “post industrial” “consumer economy” full bore.

Now you can’t find anything made in the USA to buy anymore. Our wealth is flowing overseas just like in the ’70’s and ’80’s only this time the manufacturing base is gone overseas with it.

It’s too late short economic catastrophe which will come along in its’ own sweet time.

It’s interesting the Edward Bernays and Joseph Goebbels came to prominence about the same time.

Marketing maggots and parasites spread propaganda because they control the media. You can’t control hundreds of millions of people unless you have direct access. People are just too stupid to know they are being manipulated, or don’t care. Apathy and ignorance. People actually enjoy commercials, they eat up the 3rd grade-level story-lines presented to them. Americans watch more T.V. than anybody else. While they are sitting on their asses getting obese eating doritos, the manipulation masters beam any and every kind of propaganda directly into their brain.

Sometimes the issue of what to do with masses, how to get them to wake up, becomes moot. They are either too stupid to care, or not worth waking up. How do you teach cockroaches to read? Good luck. People can only be manipulated if they let themselves. The Romans sat on their asses, at the circuses, for 600 years and did nothing. What we have, literally and figuratively, are cow-humans. Cows being herded by by manipulation masters.

Propaganda is successful because people have been trained by school, church, and elders to have an authoritarian mindset. The establishment press reinforces this. “Believe your leaders and believe what you’re taught” is the message we’re continually taught.

Instead, if teachers, parents, and the press urged us to be critical and independent thinkers we’d be less susceptible to propaganda. Curiosity, finding out answers for ourselves, and a healthy suspicion of the motives of those in power should be our watchwords.

“What we have, literally and figuratively, are cow-humans. Cows being herded by by manipulation masters.”

Yeah well, cows are sweet and have big tits.

Pointing out your point is useless.

I’ll have to think a little before I give up my cow friends. All my friends are cows (or gophers, bunnies, cyotees, sparrows, meadowlarks, speed goats, deer, badger, redtailed hawk, mouses,
bassett hounds, racoons,- they all live on my piece of ground here.

Rather than point at the cows and saying “you imbeciles ” , how about offering a real alternative.

Defining the problem is getting kinda old, here on tbp and most alternative news.

WE ALL KNOW WHAT’S WRONG

NOW WHAT. think..think.. think

A fine example of a skilled opportunist from another Nomad (Lost) generation. Don’t ever think that our peers might not be extremely dangerous, especially when they harness Boomer (Prophet) ideologies. (See Palin and Obama for how its done.)

I will definitely look for a good bio of this guy and read “Propaganda” now.

You know, Goebbels and Hitler were Nomads, too.

a true evil genius. the world continues to mutate and be damaged by the use of his techniques, with results even the great bernays never could have anticipated.

well beyond madison avenue and corporate pr, politicians use these tools to get elected. to govern. schools use them to control their charges. advertizements bombard human infants, toddlers and children hundreds of times a day so by the time they begin school, acceptance of the messages is second nature.

and news media use the techniques to increase and maintain viewership numbers; actual news and information is no longer the product.

truly amazing, the impact this man has had on the western world. shit, eastern too.

ivan, that is one hell of a challenge. i’m just trying to discuss that question, on a retail scale, one person at a time, among my circle of family, friends and acquaintances. that is the best i can come up with.

if only i had a star trek phaser, for one day. and the will to use it. (oh wait, i got that part.)

I would nominate Niccolo Machiaveli as the founding father of what is now called PR…

“For government consists mainly in so keeping your subjects that they shall be neither able, nor disposed to injure you. . . ” or in today’s language – YES WE CAN….
