The markets are attempting to rally on the “unexpectedly positive” retail sales numbers for April. The bullshit is getting so deep in this country, you have to wear hip boots. Even though I’m a trusting soul and know the MSM and our Wall Street economist “experts” will tell me what I need to know, I decided to go directly to the report. Here are my observations about the “strong” retail sales:
- Through the beauty of seasonal adjustments the actual 2.7% decrease in retail sales in April versus March becomes a .09% increase, which is rounded up to .1% by the MSM. The government drones would never use seasonal adjustments to make numbers look better than they really are. Right?
- Even with seasonal adjustments, retail sales only went up $377 million. The subprime financing scam being run by the Obama owned Ally Financial and the other government subsidized Wall Street shysters resulted in a $783 million increase in auto sales. Therefore, retail sales excluding this government use of your tax dollars actually declined by $406 billion.
- The MSM is crowing about the lower gasoline sales which are benefitting the American consumer. If you look at the 4 month trend versus last year, you see that retail sales at gasoline stations is down 1.1% versus last year. Let me remind you that last year was the highest average price for gasoline in history, so a 1.1% decline is not exactly a windfall to the consumer. Do you see the MSM reporting the facts on this chart?
- The first four months of retail sales in 2013 have sucked. Overall, they are up 3.3%. Subtracting the government boosted auto sales and the increase is 2.5%. Even using the government manipulated CPI yields basically flat retail sales with 2012. Using a real inflation rate of 5% reveals that real retail sales are declining by 2.5% in the first four months of 2013.
- If there is a real housing recovery how could retail sales of furniture, electronics and building materials be languishing in the -0.7% to 3.6% range? How can general merchandise sales (Wal-Mart, Target) be 3.4% below last year?
The fact is that real retail sales are falling. The Obama tax increases and Obamacare insurance premium increases have sucked the life out of the consumer. Gas prices have risen 10 cents per gallon in the last two weeks. The busy driving season is coming. The Middle East is a powderkeg. Hurricane season isn’t far off. Companies are cutting the hours of their employees. The savings rate is already at 2.7%. Consumers are reducing credit card debt. There are 10,000 people per day turning 65. Sounds like a recipe for strong retail sale growth. Right?
Maybe a government drone economist could chime in and explain the extreme wide variation in seasonal adjustments over the last ten years. Shouldn’t seasonal adjustments for the same month be fairly consistent over time? Inquiring minds want to know.

The Congress has the right to tax per the Sixteenth amendment. I believe in the Constitution. I believe in honesty and integrity. So I believe all people should pay their taxes. That means declare income and take all available deductions and do all possible to minimize tax. But to evade tax is a crime. It is fraud. And you and many others seem to be supportive of that crime. It truly is disgusting.

I get it that you’re angry at the system and the generations that came before you. You have come of age when corruption abounds in nearly every facet of our culture. You are pragmatic and have chosen your way to survive the harsh economic landscape. One problem with immoral leaders is that they implicitly give regular folks permission to break the rules too.
Others have different ways of coping with the insanity around them. I try to live honorably myself so as not to be contaminated by “them” and so become like them. I see it as a battle for my own integrity, and that’s what keeps me honest on my tax returns. But you have a different priority, to refuse to give the Evil Machine any more than you have to.

It’s almost comical talking about honesty, integrity, and principles with respect to the federal government when it itself hasn’t had any for at least 60 years. (OK, I’ll give Carter a maybe, in gruging hindsight.) I used to think all high and mighty like some here… but guess what? It’s a cold war now, and the principles that really matter are already in direct conflict.
I am appalled by much of what I have seen posted here, and that tax frauds get applauded and cheered and those supporting the rule of law get opposed. I come here to associate with people of honor and integrity and understanding. At the moment, I just do not see very many of them.
@Llpoh – whatever bean counter. Basically, have you ever worked in the restaurant/bar industry? You are required to “tip out” at most places… Meaning, some assholebean counter like you comes in and leaves Calamity exactly 15% tip. Calamity probably is required to kick down money to the buss boy, the bar tender and the hostess at the end of the shift. The amount the waiter tips out depends… If the busser fills your waters and busts ass he gets more. Hostess seats high tipping regulars in your section, she gets a bigger kickback. Had a lot of tables that ordered mixed drinks? Bartender gets a little extra. When it’s said and done, it is extremely difficult to account for your exact tip amounts, but if you average 15% of your sales, tip out 1/3 to everyone else… really walking away with 8-10% of your sales in tips is standard and using your gross sales to estimate tips is not a way to cheat taxes. You have some tips from credit cards that go on your paycheck every 2 weeks, your cash tips are being split every which way with the front-of-the-house and you take them home daily… Every restaurant basically teaches the servers to declare their cash tips at a set % of their gross sales. This is how you are taught to do it. What Calamity is doing is so ordinary as to not raise an eyebrow to anyone with experience in the restaurant service industry. For servers to do line-item accounting of their tips is pointless and would require more accounting skills than the average server possesses. If they were that great and dedicated at accounting then they wouldn’t be waitresses – duh. Finally, I am not agreeing with Calamity’s reasonings on *why* she personally does this, only affirming that this is common standard practice in her industry. Truly the problem is with a tax system that is so complex that makes it overly complicated and difficult to even understand, calculate or pay your taxes to begin with.
@Llpoh: Oh – and I forgot to mention something else. My experience in restaurants was during the 1990s. When I started out everything was paper order tickets etc, and over the decade that I slung food the entire industry switched over to computerized Ordering/POS where each waiter swipes a card or punches in their code then types in their orders. Restaurants are completely tracked as to who sells what. Each servers gross sales as well as credit card tips are accounted for fully. A lot of the purpose of this was so the IRS could get their greedy mitts on tip money. Because each server’s exact gross sales are accounted for, the IRS now has a way to estimate how much tip $ they expect. The % of gross sales method of estimating your tip taxes is how it is done, before computerized tracking of sales there was much more money to be made under the table in the industry. Now there is none. Calamity may have her views on paying taxes, but from reading this thread it seems she does pay them and at the standard rate and method by which other waiters all do… So she isn’t a tax cheat as far as her large chain restaurant work goes.
Hmmm. I find Calamity’s story a bit disappointing. Re paying Federal income taxes, I have mixed feelings. I pay all the tax I’m am legally required to (and hopefully no more), but not out of a sense of moral duty. The Fed gov’t is such a corrupt, wasteful entity, and often acts entirely contrary to my basic wishes, it really pains me to contribute. When Ann Barnhardt calls to starve the beast, I am sympathetic. Maybe I am just too cowardly to follow suit.
On the other hand, Calamity’s posts on this thread have waffled and fluctuated. If she had said she pays the least tax she thinks she can get away with, as a protest against Fed policy, from the get go, I’d probably say “you go, girl”. But the storyline seems a little cheesy. The prevaricating bothers me more than the result.
Re student loans-that is an obligation Calamity willingly accepted. Unless someone held a gun to her head while signing the paperwork, she made a promise to repay the loans. That is not negotiable, IMO. If you are really just trying to confirm whom to write the check, I am with you, Calamity. If your court case is a dodge to try to get a free lunch, that I cannot support.
