Wow, what a lucky freak accident!

I hope that biker realizes how extraordinarily fortunate he was, and bikes more safely in the future. Most car-motorcycle or car-bicycle collisions, no matter how “minor”, turn out very badly for the biker. A soft, human body usually doesn’t come out too well when colliding with 3500 lbs of metal moving at a high speed.

Human bodies never do well against that much mass, even at low speeds. As a child of about 10 yrs I was struck by a car slowing to a stop, when I stepped out between two parked cars. I ended sailing through the air and landed 10 to 12 feet from where I was struck.

The young couple in the car got out and, by the grace of God, discovered I was on the sidewalk in front of a retired MD’s townhouse [this was in Chicago, 1953], and they took me there. He must have been in his eighties, but was careful and bandaged me w/o charge, as far as I know. The insurance company sent a fellow around the next day to see how I was. I think my parents settled out of court for $120. Those were the days!

While living in Spain I used to go to Jarama race course to watch the big road racing bikes. We sat at the hairpin at the end of the long straightaway. Guys would lose the bike approaching 200mph and I saw a couple of crashes where the guy ended up on his feet like the video above. It was amazing to see the human body looking exactly like a rag doll and get up and walk away!
