I feel sorry for people who live in cities…

My daughter plays this regularly, but until now I hadn’t listened to the lyrics. Very good song.

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

I always wondered, even in elementary school, where adults were going. There didn’t seem to be any dedication to mastery of what they loved doing, only to work for the next payment, the next car repair, the bigger house, out-compete their neighbor, New Year’s Eve kisses and booze, and then it began again. But the New Year looked like the old year. Going nowhere.

Because of time and place (being older), I preferred the Tears for Fears original version. One of my favorite synthesizer-pop tunes of that early 80s period (well, fav not done by Duran Duran).

The video above, of the Gary Jules version, done by Michel Gondry, the guy who did those White Stripes vids, and the feature film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (and a bunch of other films and music vids.) I’ve met him, we have a common friend, cool creative guy, pretty normal considering the weird imaginative stuff he’s created.
