Don’t confuse online payments company with Mideast militants
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — A mobile payments company on Wednesday changed its name from Isis Wallet to Softcard to avoid sharing a name with the extremist group known for a vicious campaign of violence Syria and Iraq.
The group known by the acronym Isis has been waging a campaign of violence in Syria and Iraq. This week, the group beheaded another journalist, Steven Sotloff, and posted a video of the gruesome murder.
Isis Chief Executive Michael Abbot said in a blog post the company is rebranding itself because “however coincidental, we have no desire to share a name with this group and our hearts go out to those affected by this violence.”
Isis had announced in July that it was looking for a new name “to avoid confusion and association with a violent Islamic militant group in the Middle East.”
