Earlier this week I was making my normal daily commute through the badlands of West Philly on my way to work. I made my normal right turn onto Fairmont Avenue at 34th street, where the famous gated low income housing shangri la of Mantua Square is located. The hovels in the block before Mantua Square look like this:
Every third house is boarded up. Trash and garbage litter the streets. You rarely see a soul stirring, especially at 7:30 am. No one on this block hustling off to work. The buildings are literally falling down. As I’ve noted before, the median household income in this neighborhood is less than $19,000. More than a third of the people haven’t even graduated high school. The home values are less than $35,000, as if someone would actually buy in this neighborhood. The true unemployment rate is above 60%. Everyone is living on the government dole. This is truly a major encampment for the Free Shit Army.
But still, most of the cars parked on the streets are nicer than mine. There are BMWs, Cadillacs, Volvos, and numerous vehicles with new temporary tags in their rear windows. All of the hovels have Direct TV satellite dishes. The youths I see wandering the streets all have iPhones. Many are wearing Air Jordan sneakers. They get out of luxury automobiles to line up for free food every Thursday at the local church.
But on this particular day, I turned the corner and a big green truck was taking up most of the street in front of one of the hovels. As I maneuvered around the behemoth I noticed the name on the side of the truck – Amazon Fresh.
I had never seen a truck like this or heard the term. When I got to the office I googled Amazon Fresh. It seems this is another new service being rolled out by Jeff Bezos. I wonder how much money he’ll lose on this one. It will surely make his stock go up another $100.
But here is the deal. They have rolled this high end grocery delivery concept out in Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Manhattan. It’s is an upscale concept with upscale prices. They evidently just started it in Center City Philadelphia in upscale neighborhoods. You have to pay $300 per year as an Amazon Prime member to just be able to access the service. The groceries are then 10% to 20% more expensive than shopping at a grocery store. You then have to tip the delivery person. Therefore, you are paying approximately 30% more for your groceries.
How the fuck can a free shit army corporal living on welfare in a rundown hovel in West Philly afford to have their groceries delivered by Amazon at a 30% premium, when I cut coupons, buy stuff on sale, and shuffle out the door at 7:00 am every Sunday to shop for groceries? There is truly something wrong with this country when hard working, tax paying, families do the heavy lifting and the lazy, shiftless, uneducated dregs of society think they deserve to be housed, clothed and fed with our tax dollars.
Now I’m off to my mom’s house to help her pack for her move. Tomorrow, I’ll head off to Giant for groceries and then put in two more raised beds to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and lettuce. I’ll get my paycheck next week with the comforting knowledge that the thousands of dollars I pay in Federal, State, and Philly taxes will go towards allowing the free shit army to get their groceries delivered by Amazon Fresh.
Why, Obama picks up the tab for the 30% premium, Amazon direct bills Uncle Sam.

I was waiting to get my hair cut this afternoon. I just sat quietly and listened to the conversations of mostly older women. A couple of them self identified as liberals but expressed outright disgust at the ineptitude of Cankles Clinton. One of the hairdressers said she liked Cankles but would never vote for her because is incompetent to run the country. She based that on her performance as Secretary of State. They also expressed quite a bit of anger regarding the direction our country has taken. They fear for the children and grandchildren. They’re not happy. I thought it was a good question, knee-jerk critics aside, and that is why I posed it. I even added that it can’t be the monthly holidays designed to get people shopping. Is that all there is?
There was a culture I envisioned back in 3rd or 4th grade, it had to do with peace and brotherly love. Then I grew up, woke up from the dream and found the USA is a cold and lonely place, much like the Universe, where some folks enjoy the very best and some the very worst and some don’t enjoy anything at all but want to put and end to the world instead of themselves in some stupid murder-suicide triangle.
