A tale of two home invasions

This is a tale of two home invasions.

First, some highlights from this article.

May 1, 2015

Adrian Anthony, 21; Demetre Brown, 22; Alexander Dupree, 24; and Michael Pugh, 23; were sentenced Friday, after a jury on March 10 found them guilty of a host of felony charges, including rape, criminal deviate conduct, carjacking, criminal confinement, aggravated battery and robbery.

The convictions were handed down about 18 months after the men broke into a house on East 79th Street, ransacked the home, sexually assaulted resident Eileen Potenza and her adult daughter and left with many of their belongings. The Indianapolis Star typically does not name people who are or may have been victims of sexual assault, but Potenza spoke publicly about the ordeal after the verdicts were handed down.

Eileen Potenza and her husband, Carl, both read emotional statements in court before Borges handed down the sentences. Carl Potenza, who has a physical problem that requires him to wear leg braces, was beaten up and held captive in a bedroom during the burglary.

                 Gang raped mother and daughter

Carl Potenza said the brutal violation of his wife and daughter continue to haunt him. Another daughter, who was not home at the time, also was traumatized and is in counseling, he said.

Still, Carl Potenza said, the “two hours of hell” was followed by an amazing outpouring of help and support from friends and strangers touched by their horrific experience.

He concluded his statement by saying “we don’t want these guys to ever have a chance to do something like this again.”

Turning to the four defendants — who sat handcuffed, shackled and connected at the waist by heavy chains — the preschool teacher asked: “When and why did your lives go so terribly wrong that you thought that this behavior was OK?”

Answers to some of her questions were revealed in court Friday. Prosecutors noted all four young men had criminal records, both as juveniles and adults, before the home 2013 invasion. All had extensive histories of drug and alcohol abuse. And all had histories of violating court orders and prison rules, as well as failed attempts at rehabilitation.

But the horrific “nature of the crimes,” Borges said, clearly outweighed any mitigating circumstances that would have justified reducing the sentences. She noted the men did not just attack and rob the family, they humiliated the victims over the course of hours.

According to graphic details of the crimes revealed during the trial in March, the four men and two friends drove to the Potenza home early on Oct. 29, 2013. Eileen and her daughter said in court that they each were forced to drive to an ATM to get money. Eileen Potenza was shot twice — in the leg and in the ankle — for trying to escape.

Carl Potenza was restrained in the bedroom with a blanket over him throughout the home invasion.

Anthony admitted that he shot Eileen Potenza and sexually assaulted her in a car, after they had left the home to go to the ATM. At least four of the men sexually assaulted the couple’s daughter.

Some of the same men also are charged in another brutal home invasion that happened five days earlier in a young couple’s home on North Spring Mill Road, less than three miles away. The two vicious attacks left residents across the city on edge.

Anthony also was convicted in April in the murder of construction worker Robbie Gibson, during a Nov. 27, 2013, armed robbery on North Gray Street — about a month after he and the other men burglarized and robbed two Far-Northside homes. He is awaiting sentencing in that case, which will add even more time in prison.

Spells also pleaded guilty to burglary in the Spring Mill Road home invasion. He faces a sentence of 50 to 80 years in prison on all charges in the two cases and is scheduled to be sentenced July 29.

Next, contrast the Potenza’s story with these highlights from this article.

September 30, 2015

FOLKSTON, Ga. — Two sisters fought back against the man police say attacked them inside of their own home, killing him in the process.

Police said it happened about 7 p.m. Tuesday night in a Charlton County, Georgia home on Cedar Ridge Road. That’s when Johnathan Green allegedly barged in and attacked before one of the sisters fatally shot him.

Green’s body was sent to Savannah for an autopsy.

Johnathan Green was shot to death by a woman police say he attacked. His family says otherwise.

Taylor said both sisters are over the age of 65. One moved in to take care of the other, he told First Coast News.

First Coast News spoke to Green’s family, who said Green was mentally incompetent and would have never done something like authorities are alleging.

As the cliché goes: when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.  Speaking of mentally incompetent, thank God those sisters had, “common sense,” to have a gun and know how to use it, to borrow President Obama’s favorite gun phrase.

Of course, you can agree to give up your natural right of self defense, and the Second Amendment that was written to stop the government from infringing upon this natural right, in the hopes that the government will protect you, like in Chicago, where they have severe gun control laws.

If you really do not want to be a victim in your own home, then get an equalizer that can stop an attacker, or multiple attackers.  In my experience, that equalizer is a firearm, especially if you are a woman over 65, or disabled.  But for the love of God, get good training on how to use it, and how to safely practice using it.  Then practice regularly, keep it handy, and away from small children, until they can learn how to safely use it, like this 14 year old.  Please read my article:  Guide for Learning to Use a Sidearm to Defend Yourself, Your Loved Ones, and Your Property, Should a Race War Break Out.

Next, answer the following important question: HOW LONG ARE THE SCREWS SECURING THE HINGES OF YOUR FRONT DOOR?

Go unscrew one and measure it now, friends.  It will take less than one minute.

If they are less than 3 inches, or you do not have a good deadbolt, then you have a one-kick-door.   We will see how you do when a vehicle loaded with bad hombres pulls into your driveway…and a moment later are all in your home with guns to your head.

We need to take responsibility for our own safety, and to have our mind, body, and equipment ready at all times. We all need to work together to create an environment that is hostile to bad guys.  We don’t need more gun-free zones like San Bernadino (14 killed),  Ft. Hood (13 killed), Sandy Hook (27 killed), Columbine High School (13 killed), and Utøya Norway, (77 killed), where psychopaths can mow us down at their leisure.  The hope that criminals and psychopaths will not obtain or use weapons because it is illegal is a fantasy.  Again, just look at Chicago, and Paris.

Don’t EVER open the door for strangers.  Always keep your doors locked, install door jamb armor with 3-1/2 stainless screws, always use the intercom when someone rings, always carry a weapon, and get the training and find the will to use it.

“An armed society is a polite society, ” -Heinlein.

Finally, if you know someone special that likes the finer things in life, and lives in an area where they may need to defend those finer things…and their life…[against multiple armed home invaders] I offer the following to help you even the odds:

What a shame those prime specimens of humanity couldn’t have ended up as spare parts for sale from the local Planned Parenthood clinic… Money spent on abortion of these feral animals saves future taxpayers far more in the long run.

Benelli shotguns for home protection? Look at how much money you can waste. You could buy 3 or 4 tactical mossbergs for the same money, and arm the family. 300. for a flashlight? No thanks

“First Coast News spoke to Green’s family, who said Green was mentally incompetent and would have never done something like authorities are alleging.”

The reporter should have asked how his body ended up in a pair of elderly sisters home then. I’d like to hear that explanation.

starfcker,

There’s no need for all that tactical stuff, I carried a plain old 5 shot shotgun in Vietnam and it was just fine.

It did have a 14 or so inch barrel on it, but if you want one of those you have to fill out a bunch of paperwork and pay a $200 tax to legally own it. It might be worth it to jump through those hoops and pay it, a short barrel would increase its utility in close up indoor defense situations.

Mossbergs with a 14 inch barrel and a full stock are the perfect home gun. Too bad they’re not legal. That’s what NYPD has

Many people are unprepared to defend themselves or family. This kind of crime happens every day in our once great nation. Especially black on white crime which the liberal news media ignores most of the time. IF whites understood the danger of being around blacks they would avoid them like the plague. Always maintain situational awareness when anywhere near young blacks. Go to the Daily Stormer , New Nation or Daily Kenn websites to get a true idea of the crime committed by blacks against whites. It is sickening but reality.

I am convinced there is no way whites can build and maintain a society with blacks. Blacks destroy everything they touch. They are destructive parasites unfit for modern western civilization. God speed segregated nation.

What do you have in your pockets? Really….at this moment?

It sounds reactionary….I know….but if FIRE could kick in, drill, pick the lock or otherwise gain entry to your home, wouldn’t you carry at least a small fire extinguisher around with you and not leave your super-duper Benelli fire extinguisher potentially all the way across the house?

It is increasingly apparent to me that if you think there’s more than an infinitesimal chance of a home invasion it makes sense to carry a pistol INSIDE YOUR OWN HOME. What you always carry is there when, in the COMPLETELY UNEXPECTED moment you need it.

I concur that Job One is making our doors relatively resistant to fast entry. No door can be made entry-proof, but the goal is 1) make it easier to go elsewhere, and failing that, 2) make it take TIME (and preferably make it make lots of noise.)

But it isn’t as weird as we might think, to leave that concealed pistol in an inside-the-waistband holster and carry it every waking minute, inside the house as well as outside. Carried properly, a pistol is not uncomfortable.

In coming years this will no longer seem like an “out there” notion.

Good idea but it doesn’t fit all door frames. I tried this myself without success and have continued to recoil from the conclusion that I need to slap steel plates on both sides of the strike plates (latch and deadbolt) and connect them with bolts.

My only other solution is to replace the entire door & frame with something far more robust. Once again, all that does is buy time, because is is almost impossible to acquire pick-resistant lock sets given the ubiquity of sophisticated picking tools, not to mention battery-operated Sawsalls.

Geeze, bb, you Klansman!

(sarc off)

I used to be a card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party (I kid you not) and a True Believer in the Univeralist Cathedral dogma that we’re All The Same Under The Skin.

Yeah. Not any more.

Race is not a social construct, it’s hereditary ancestry. Heredity clearly dictates far more than just skin color or the proportion of fast twitch muscle fibers. Ancestry dictates even behavior and belief, as demonstrated in studies of identical twins raised apart in divergent environments.

Individuals can vary from the mean, but the population IS THE MEAN.

The MEAN person of African ancestry has a lower IQ, a higher propensity for violence and a lower aptitude for grasping the consequences of actions.

People of African ancestry in the USA are marinating every waking moment in the Narrative that blames YT for every slight, every failure, every sense that they’re not living Large (enough.)

Less intelligent + more violence prone + less grasp of consequences + blames white racism for everything.

What does that add up to?

It doesn’t matter how many decent blacks I know. It doesn’t matter how many of the rare blacks with high IQ’s (related to the Igbo tribe in Nigeria???) I’ve met. [With the exception of the aforementioned Igbo] Even high IQ blacks’ kids should revert to the mean…and we see this in studies documenting that high income blacks’ kids (presumably doctors, lawyers, etc.) have IQ’s right back toward the mean of the ancestral population. If a high IQ black guy is an outlier in his family tree (which is entirely possible, it’s a random shuffle of genes we all get), his kids will almost certainly be less smart…possibly by a mile.

All this argues in favor of largely homogeneous societies. Homogeneous societies are more peaceful over the long sine wave curve of ups and downs in social mood.

When our social mood finally…finally….FINALLY rolls over from this 20 year deviation into Pathological Optimism, our Section 8, shuffle-the-deck war on Freedom to Not Associate is going to produce violent conflict not seen in 350 years in the English Speaking World.

When this thing rolls over, the inner cities—teeming with the least capable, least peaceful blacks—-will explode. By the time it’s over I would not be surprise to see entire sections of Philly, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, etc. ***INTENTIONALLY**** burned to the ground, along with everyone living within them.

Think “Escape from New York” with a different ending….

DC, what was the problem that it did not fit? Was the space between the door and the door frame too narrow, or was there another problem?

You can get a used pump shotgun for as little as $100 if you look, and It doesn’t have to be a 12 gauge. A 20 gauge will do just fine if recoil is an issue. Forget the folding stocks, lights, exotic sights and all that crap. All you’ll need is the front bead for the job you’ll be doing. A few boxes of buckshot and you’re good to go. Get some type of door barrier as well, you can find them at Lowes or Home Depot or go to the Internet. Motion detectors are cheap, get some of them and put them in strategic locations.

I don’t mean to insult HedgelessHorseman at all, his list is magnificent. But if money is an issue, then you can still slow down and then kill the fucking multicultural diversifiers for less than $200.

As I recall (it has been probably a year), the frame was too deep. Also complicating things is an attached storm door frame. I think I have to scrap the whole thing and start over (it has a side window that massively undermines security anyway, which would necessitate adding either security glass or a security film to the window cartridge.)

I read in another thread where people were saying that having a dog is an unnecessary expense. If you’ve ever seen a pit bull defend its family you already know that feeding that dog may very well be the best home defense investment you can make. Granted, it may not be the optimum option for many people living in the city, but for country folk there is no better friend than a dog, especially a dog willing to die in place defending its home and family. At a minimum they will alert you to immediate trouble so that you can arm yourself. Dogs have a “sixth sense” of impending danger and will let you know when to be wary.

DC, I don’t carry in the house, but do have a hidden, easily accessible loaded weapon in every room. My wife and kids know where each one is. Does that count?

One dog good, two or three even better.

If you’ve never seen a couple of bull terriers get on a coon (the four legged kind, but the two legged kind wouldn’t fare any better), it is a fearsome thing to behold. Those dogs are absolutely fearless and stronger than you would ever suspect. When my kids were growing up on the farm I never worried about them because the dogs were always out with them. Any threat was dealt with immediately and with extreme prejudice.

I always wondered if the dogs would take a snake, since most animals are instinctively afraid of them. My three year old was out in the garden in summer when a five foot long black snake struck at him. It did bite him but the two year old bull terrier that was with him did not even hesitate- it proceeded to rag doll that snake for about two minutes until the dog was sure it was dead. I saw the whole thing from 100 feet away, and when I ran over my little boy said, “Papa, Pepper kill a ‘nake!” He wasn’t even crying from the bleeding bite mark on his leg. (I did hate to see a good varmint predator die, but the stupid thing bit my kid. I have no doubt that the dog would do the same to the poisonous variety.)

If you have the space and temperament, always keep a dog.

It is not generally known, but the slaves who were brought to the “New World” were not the “best and brightest”, but were the low IQ “slackers”, dull-witted “morons” and conquests of internecine tribal warfare who were shipped to us.
The African village chieftains were not stupid. They sold off people they wanted to get rid of. Hence, our present “problems” with our now-obsolete “farm machinery”.
That being said, “we should have picked our own cotton”…

We are paying for our ancestors’ stupidity and lack of foresight…

@Faux Queue

The gun-in-every-room is the approach favored by the other side of the aisle (of self-protection fans.) I, too, toy with it, and if we still had a bunch of gun-qualified “kids” living with us, it would be the better option (given that it’s part of the gunfighter’s Bible: when in a gunfight, bring a rifle; better yet, bring lots of friends with rifles.)

I no longer am in the dog biz (my last beloved friend reached her end almost 6 years ago) but they are wonderful family members. (I’ve not tried the “livestock” version of dog ownership, so on that I have no comment or opinion.) The one thing FerFAL from Argentina said was that if dogs were left unattended on guard duty, they were subject to being poisoned as part of softening up the target. I’m a fan of the “dog calls my attention to the problem, the problem gets a lead infusion” approach to dog-based security, but I’m open-minded.

All of my kids’ families have dogs. One of them is an Aussie Cattle Dog, and I have no doubt that 30 lb dog would take on a 1000 lb bear if it pissed on her land.

If you’re going to buy a firearm to protect you and your loved ones, then you buy the best you can afford.

Got life insurance? How much?

Good. Then why skimp on the device you’re going to use to defend those lives?

That said, you don’t NEED a Benelli super-duper, high-speed, go fast shotgun… like Anon at 10:18 – a plain vanilla 12 gauge will do ya just fine. If it were me just starting out, then a Winchester M12 with a cropped barrel would be fine (cropped to 18.25″ to stay legal). Don’t want a corn-shucker? Get a humpback – a Browning A5. Since it’s recoil operated, not gas, you can theoretically shorten the barrel to whatever you want and it will work just fine (so long as you have the friction rings set up correctly).

Walnut and steel trump plastic. And my M12 has been retro-fitted with a WWII buttstock that has a steel buttplate. Folks forget that the OTHER END of the weapon is also useful.

All the high speed, go fast sighting crap? When your asshole deep in the shit, you’re just pointing at whatever is biggest and lighting off rounds.

Little high speed flashlights are great for the cool factor, but a big fuckin Maglite that runs on D-cells isn’t called a “Tonk” for nothing – that’s the sound it makes when you swing one and connect with some bad guy’s skull. It is proven. It is effective. It is reliable. I own two.

And I have mentioned this before, but I don’t run 00 buckshot in my Winchester.

It’s simple physics and common sense:

– A 2 3/4″ 12 gauge round in 00 buckshot carries 9 pellets of .33 caliber.

– A 2 3/4″ 12 gauge round in #1 buckshot carries 16 pellets of .30 caliber.

Which means you’re trading .03″ in diameter per pellet for almost double the number of pellets.

If you’re running 3″ 12 gauge shells in #1 buckshot, the number jumps to 24 pellets – almost 3X the number of pellets than in 00 buckshot.

I’ve used #1 personally after being turned on to it by an old SF Master Sergeant. His sage advice is well heeded. If you connect with every pellet – best case scenario – that’s like the Bad Guy being shot with 24 rifle bullets of .30 caliber. Each. Simultaneously. He won’t be getting up anytime soon.

Of course, you should add Wall Spackle, a putty knife and a can of matching wall paint to the list… just sayin’….

And a genuine vest might be nice, but having had to jump out of bed, grab your shit and get ready to get dirty on more than one occasion, I’d really like to see the OP bumble-fuck around with a vest while a wild pack of Yoofs and Diversities kicks their way into the home…

No, you roll out, grab the nearest BOOM STICK (Shop smart. Shop S-Mart) and – if you’re very, very lucky – you might get a precious few seconds to jam your feet in a pair of boots (or, in the case of Mr. Homeowner, a pair of slippers). Fucking around with a vest? Heh… only the movies, dude… The only way to be in a vest and confront Bad Guys at asshole-dark in the morning is to wear that fucker to bed before the Bad Guys get there…. ’cause you ain’t gonna have time to put it on once shit goes hot.

I’m all for owning one. But anyone thinking they’re gonna be able to dick around with it while the Yoofs are coming for your ass is living some Walter Mitty fantasy…
