My brother actually called me once to come show him how to clean a fish . He was mid 30’s at the time . Had gone fishing , caught fish , no friggen idea what to do after that .
I taught .
As an avid , hunter of wild game , fish etc , I learned at an early age.
Actually got certified as an open water diver for 80 feet depth , just so I could SEE where the fish where .
Got to the point that I never took food with me when I was in the woods , water etc.
Food is everywhere , just gotta learn some hard won skills is all .
Don’t be to choosy also lol .
Butcher a cow , deer, coyote, or any fish , etc , well if it kept me alive um well I don’t go hungry lol .
Just a cook , looking back on a varied life , whatever .

I hate to kill things. But I believe every male child should be taught to hunt, to dress, to butcher, whether he enjoys it or not. I hunted for a number of years. I liked being out in the wilderness at dawn, I liked the togs and the gear, carrying lots of guns. The blood and guts, not so much. But I did it all, hogs, deer, ducks, rabbits, and when I felt I had that whole skill set down pat, I quit and never hunted again. When I fish, which is often, I keep enough for one meal. Same with spearfishing. I don’t freeze fish. I’m not squeamish, but I have no bloodlust. That others enjoy shooting things doesn’t bother me in the least. Just not my thing.

starfcker, why only male children? I was so young when I was taught to catch and clean fish that the skills feel like they are innate. It doesn’t matter that it’s been over 40 years, the skills are still there. All children should have this type of education. I taught myself to butcher chickens at a much later age, but I think the fish experience helped. In my house if you waited for the man to do the butchering you might just starve, hubby just doesn’t have the skills. Some people are better at butchering than others and I think it has very little to do with their sex.
