The Cruz Fallout: “An Extraordinary Scene The Like Of Which Has Not Been Seen In A Generation”

Tyler Durden's picture

In some ways, the scandal that took place last night at the Republican national convention, was not a surprise.

Reportedly those who mattered, knew in advance what was coming.  As Bloomberg writes, earlier in the day, Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort said he would be personally viewing the Cruz speech in advance. “I’m comfortable that Senator Cruz is going to talk about his vision for America,” Manafort said. “He’ll give a sign of where he is on Donald Trump that will be pleasing to the Trump campaign and to  Republicans.” Cruz told Trump two days ago he wouldn’t be endorsing him Wednesday night, and that the Trump folks knew what to expect in his speech, according to Cruz strategist Jason Johnson.

This goes to a question Bloomberg posed shortly after the speech: “the problem for Trump wasn’t just the lack of an endorsement from Cruz. The speech raised questions about why Trump — who has campaigned on his extraordinary negotiating skills — allowed Cruz to take stage.”

“Wow, Ted Cruz got booed off the stage, didn’t honor the pledge! I saw his speech two hours early but let him speak anyway. No big deal!” Trump said late Wednesday on Twitter.

However, for many when Ted Cruz decided to snub Donald Trump
with his refusal to officially endorse the presidentical candidate, it was a stunning surprise, and led the
crowd in Cleveland to erupt in a chorus of boos while the political media exploded.

Surprising or not, the outpouring of condemnations was fast and furious.

In Bloomberg‘s take of the night’s events, Cruz, infamous in the Senate for a reputation of looking out only for himself, proved again that he was willing to go it alone as the party rallied around Trump during an evening of speeches from Republican heavyweights and some of its most ambitious politicians.

Cruz’s speech seemed to amount to a political bet that Trump will lose the election, and that opting not to throw his lot in with the nominee will preserve his fortunes in 2020. Unclear is whether the gambit will backfire on Cruz by prompting Republicans to blame him for refusing to get in line and help unite the party when it mattered most.

The Hill’s take is even more dire: “The Republican National Convention careened off the rails here on Wednesday night as Ted Cruz refused to endorse Donald Trump from the stage and was met with deafening boos.  It was an extraordinary scene of disunity, the like of which has not been seen at a party convention in a generation.  The chaos on the convention floor — which included angry words of recrimination from prominent Republicans in the immediate aftermath — totally overshadowed Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s acceptance of the GOP’s vice presidential nomination.”

It also dealt a shattering blow to hopes on the part of the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee that the GOP would unite here after a long and bitter primary season.

Roger Stone, a former advisor and longtime friend of Trump, called Cruz a “dumb son of a bitch” in a convention center interview with The Hill just after the Texan’s speech ended. Stone added that Cruz was “a despicable human being” and insisted that “no voter gives a crap about what Ted Cruz does — the only person this hurts is Ted Cruz.”

As we reported last night, in another sign of the dark tone of the night, security guards had to escort Ted Cruz’s wife out of the Quicken Loans Arena for her own safety. Former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli, a close Cruz confidant who was sitting with Heidi Cruz as her husband spoke, told reporters he saw Trump supporters threatening her. “People behind her were getting very ugly and physically approaching her and [Cruz’s father] Rafael,” he said. “It was not a pretty situation, and the decision was instantly made to not talk to media and get immediately out of the arena.”

The key moments of Cruz’s speech, particularly his urging of attendees to “vote your conscience,” will be replayed endlessly on cable news for at least the next 24 hours. So too will the scenes that followed.

For those who missed it, things escalated fast: as the speech wound toward its conclusion and delegates realized that Cruz would make no endorsement, Trump loyalists sprang to their feet, shouting their displeasure. Some people on the convention floor yelled “Lyin’ Ted” and “Go home!” while others gesticulated wildly.  CNN’s Anderson Cooper said on-air that there were also reports “that Ted Cruz went up to one of the donor boxes and was accosted by Trump supporters yelling in his face. One person had to be apparently restrained because they were so angry.”

The furor erupted just as the convention seemed to be recovering from the controversy over Melania Trump’s Monday address, which a Trump speechwriter admitted plagiarized from a 2008 Michelle Obama speech. The good news is that the Melania flap is now long forgotten, having been replaced by the Cruz-related uproar.

Within moments of the speech ending, big-name Republicans were excoriating Cruz. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whom Trump had seriously considered naming as his running mate, told CNN’s Dana Bash that the Texas senator’s speech was “awful and selfish.”  New York Congressman Peter King told NBC News that Cruz was “a fraud, he’s a liar, he’s self-centered and disqualified himself from ever being considered for president of the United States.”

It wasn’t all criticism, however, and some defenders of Cruz emerged. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah, standing with his wife and the Utah delegation told The Hill, “People will have to speak for themselves. I personally don’t do that. I don’t boo people at my own political convention because they’re not my candidate.”

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich sought to calm the shocked crowd with his own speech before Pence appeared. Gingrich insisted that Cruz’s comments had been misunderstood.  But teleprompters in the arena included a line in Gingrich’s prepared remarks that he had to excise on the fly, since it had clearly been written under the assumption that Cruz would endorse Trump.  Ryan Lizza of The New Yorker reported that the line was “Senator Ted Cruz in particular made the key point that we need to elect the Trump-Pence Republican ticket.”

Pence emerged into an arena that was still unsettled by the Cruz shocker. He delivered a smooth speech that was punctuated by several moments of winning self-deprecation in its early stages.  At the conclusion Pence insisted that “We have but one choice and that man is ready, this team is ready, our party is ready, and when we elect Donald Trump the 45th president of the United States, together we will make America great again.”

At that point, Trump himself joined Pence on stage and embraced him, drawing roars of approval from the crowd.

But even the feel-good end to the night would not escape the shock of what had gone before.

As The Hill concludes, this was a night that shook the Republican Party badly — and caused undisguised jubilation among Democrats. Soon after Cruz finished speaking, a three-word tweet was published on Hillary Clinton’s account. “Vote your conscience,” it read.

What is anti-Trump about:

1. defeating Hillary,
2. voting Republican up and down the ticket,
3. using your conscience to support the Constitution??

Smart move by Trump. Let Cruz demonstrate how much of a snake he is. Trump wins Texas by a slightly narrower margin and shows again that he’s not beholden to the Taliban wing of the GOP, making him more acceptable in places like PA, MI and NH. Forever ruining Cruz’s plan of running for president is just a bonus.

Curtmlr, don’t be willfully obtuse. At least Jeb and Kasich had a thimble full of decency enough to stay away altogether. Cruz brought his ugly mug and grandma voice just to give his phony revival tent speech and try to set himself up for 2020. That he unknowingly killed his chances of ever being president is cosmic justice.

They say Trump is divisive. Yet, he invited EVERY ONE of his opponents to the stage. Even better …. NONE of the speeches were vetted. Trump showed more class, and is a better uniter than all the other wannabes put together. That was proven last night.

I did not believe there cold have been a more loathsome and despicable creature than Hillcunt. And then along comes Ted, fast talking Ted ….

Senior Senator: “To save time.”

I liked her speech pretty well; she’s smart and easy on the eyes.

There is one thing, though. She doesn’t seem to be married, so apparently she has arranged it such that her three adopted children have no father. That’s poor form, in my opinion.

Trump and his cronies value blind loyalty over conscience it seems. That much appears beyond doubt.

No rational debate about anything, especially Trump’s supposed qualifications, one of which is his ability to negotiate.

Without debate, negotiation becomes simple tyrannical edict – might makes right.

Isn’t that antithetical to Republicanism?

Might makes right is a helluva negotiating position when you have the might. As far as what’s “antithetical to Republicanism”, whatever it is, bring it the fuck on. Fuck Republicanism. From what I can tell Jeb Bush embodies Republicanism. The essential elements seem to be a crazed compulsion to start foreign wars and then import the Muslim refugees, coupled with a round heeled acquiescence to whatever the democrats want.

Meh, this will blow over in an election year just like the plagiarism bullshit. I think its far worse for Cruz’s future in the party. He’s already not liked by the party as a whole and god forbid if Trump doesn’t win in November 4 years later it’s highly likely this speech will get dragged up and he’ll take blame. Cruz is an idiot. Formally endorsing Trump hurts him in no way, but this speech will. “Vote your conscience” is a didactic crap line you say at the office water cooler when trying to not offend anyone, not at a political parties national convention. Go back to Canada asshole!

The game is afoot. For the big boys, it’s time to nail their colours to the mast. SJW nonsense aside, they’re in or agin – it’s time to put up or shut up. (And that goes for everyone). Cruz was given all the rope he needed and chose to use it to hang himself.
This was why Trump let him give the speech – “Ok, go out there and tell them that. You’ll have to live with it… (your funeral..).”
Result: More cred for Trump – he defined him correctly.
The fuckers lost their minds when Trump hesitated at being railroaded into ‘The Pledge’, and even though he doesn’t do being bullied, he humored them. He did the deal. Crud reneges on the same deal, proving by his own words he’s a slimy piece of moldy navel lint who’s word means naught and deserves to be relegated to the dustbin of history. His treachery will neither be forgotten nor forgiven.

Letting this bloviating greaseball Cruz speak was a brilliant move by Trump. Cruz has destroyed himself and will no longer be a factor in national politics – he was shown to be a man without honor, man whose word means nothing, a bitter, selfish weirdo. Trump did not want this creep biting at this heels after he wins the White House. The GOP leaders, including those who are not wild about Trump, were disgusted by the performance of Cruz and there will be pay back. All this hand-wringing about the so-called “disunity” of the GOP is just that, pantywaists wee-weeing over nothing. This will soon become a forgotten incident as the public turns its thoughts once more to the economy, national security, immigration and, most of all, to the hellish vision of Hillary Clinton in the White House. Trump will finish up the convention with a great speech and then start in on Clinton. Curz, to the extent he has any effect at all on the election, can be likened to something you scrape off the sole of your shoe after a walk in the park. It should now be obvious to all what dmiwitted clodhoppers the die-hard Cruz supporters are. That said, I believe the great majority of his supporters will recognize the stakes and the danger to our country and they will support Trump.

I am full of regret that Mike Lee of Utah, normally a capable, principled man, chooses to value friendship (one of Cruz’s few) and loyalty over logic and talent. Maybe after Cruz loses his next primary Mike can plug that hole in his character and find someone worthy to support for that Senate seat.

I never liked Cruz from the moment I first saw him at the first debates, everything about him screams dishonest sleaze ball. If he walked up to you at a car lot to sell you a car you would get back into your vehicle and drive to the next lot. I find it hard to fathom how he has gotten as far as he has in politics, sleaze breeds sleaze I guess.

After that despicable performance last night he proves that he is even a bigger piece of shit that anybody thought he was before. And big props for Trump, all the pundits are always hammering him about not being a career politician and how he doesn’t know how to behave at political events, or how he doesn’t speak like a politician and etc. What he is showing all these people is that he is better at the game than they are, and seems to be doing it with one hand tied behind his back and he is still schooling them. Hell even the CNN guys were admitting that ‘hey maybe this guy is better at this stuff than we are giving him credit for’.

I hope that Trump lets the clutch out tonight and stomps on the accelerator and seals the deal. Either get on board or get out of the way because like it or not the Trump Train is coming through, should be fun.

This is just the Shiny Thing of the Day the media is using as a distraction so they don’t have to talk about Trumps message or Hillary’s crimes. Yesterday it was non stop talk about the Kasich no show and the day before it was Melania’s speech. As if she listened to Michele’s speech from ’08 and said “Well that sounds good. I think I will just go with that.”

The talking point shouldn’t be that Cruz didn’t endorse Trump, it should be that Cruz showed the world he is a loser and a pathetic one at that. He has the waxy complexion of a chronic masturbator and speaks in the annoying, condescending cadence of a practiced politician. As a true narcissist, he is not capable of comprehending the fact that voters saw through his bullshit and consequently he will never change. I love that about him. He is adorable in his predictability. That’s why the bankers love him too.

And, it did result in a lot of free publicity today complete with Hillary tweeting (upon the advice of Lyin’ Ted) to “vote” our “conscience”. I am sorry, but that is some fucking ironic shit right there.

You ever watch someone surf? If they’re really good, it looks effortless. Truth is it’s dangerous, it can and has killed plenty of people who thought they could just get out there and do the same thing. The difference is understanding what you’re dealing with and Donald Trump, unlike Stiffy Cruz, understands it better than anyone on the political stage today.

McCluhan was right. The media IS the message. And Trump is playing them like a Stradivarius.

Let’s look at a couple basic facts:

Trump’s been pulling this naughty boy routine since he was a naughty boy. He has traveled- thanks to the wealth of his Father- in the best circles and if you can pull that off with the ladies in the Hamptons, you can do it to the people of WalMart in your sleep. Nothing he says or has done can stick because a) he does that shirk and the half grin and moves on to another topic and says something like “that’s stupid” and IT WORKS. Even though they see it over and over again, they keep acting outraged and indignant- two really endearing traits- as well as prudish and provincial. Who do you think people are going to feel the warm tinglies for? He is a master of getting by and, like those guys who ride Maverick’s, he makes it look easy.

Number 2 (I don’t know why, but I know that when you read that, you thought it was funny. Number 2)

Trump has either studied hypnotism or he is a savant. When I was doing stand-up, every once in a while I’d work with a hypnotist, some good, some not so much, but after a week of watching their act you’d see all the subtle suggestions and notice the patterns of repetition, of sounds, of word tricks that would induce people to surrender their control to some degree or another. Trump does this all the time. I know the artist that draws that cartoon has done a far deeper investigation of this particular area of Trump’s tactics so I’ll leave it at that. He isn’t using 4th grade vocabulary because he’s stupid, he’s using 4th grade vocabulary because it reminds people of 4th grade and that’s about as compliant and docile as a human being ever gets and he wants people to listen to what he has to say. He repeats phrases not because he stutters or has early onset Alzheimers, he repeats phrases because they are triggers and unlike Fredo, he’s smart. Really smart. Of course there are those who can’t be hypnotized- it’s a hard 40% in an average audience and to them the whole thing looks fake as shit and a lot of them actually get mad, irate even because it’s not skillful manipulation using proven techniques, IT’S A HUGE MISTAKE! IT CAN’T BE HAPPENING! CAN’T YOU PEOPLE SEE THAT HE’S JUST A FAKE?!

Those people are called intellectuals. By each other.

People are sick to death of being treated like children by the political establishment but that’s the only way the political establishment knows how to treat people, because most of them are the same mindset as public school teachers, with much larger budgets and armed security. When Trump behaves not like Old Miss Crumpus the cat loving Assistant Principal with the Volvo( Hey, MSM that’s you!) but rather like an authentic human being that doesn’t care if you light off firecrackers in the hallway, all those triggered 4th Graders are suddenly going to want to ditch skool. And Trump will be the one holding the door open with a big grin.

This is his election to lose. Clinton and the Democrats and for that matter what is left of the neo-con/cuckservative Republicrats are fighting the last war. They are using strategies that might work at a pancake supper in Des Plaines where 100 nodding seniors are huddled together against the cold, or in front of a banner waving crowd that doesn’t understand a single word due to language issues, but Trump is somewhere out in front of Twitter tweeting to his twenty million tweeple every forty minutes.

It’s already over and not one person in a million can see it.

We live in epochal times, the stuff of legends.
