Are you using an acid stain on your concrete?
Does it look great right after you hose it off but like shit when it dries?
I have done a lot of concrete staining at my house and I found that if you buy a concrete sealer that provides a “Wet look” your stain will stay looking great like you just hosed it off. I use a lacquer product that I like but I would think Thompsons or other brands offer a product that would work well. Test a small area first and make sure you like the finish before you commit.
Yes, likely true on that sealer, BUT, it is very very toxic. Requires
a professional quality mask, and be quick about it. That stuff smells
like airplane glue. Remember the models we used to build? That stuff.

Stucky, if’n you decide to use a concrete sealer you want to get a product called Super Diamond Clear with “high solids”. You might have to call around to concrete supply houses to find it. Make sure you ask for the high solids variety.

You can even tint it by adding dyes to it. I was a concrete man for 15+ years…SDC is the shit! You can use a medium to heavy nap paint roller to apply it. Do it on a breezy day and the fumes aren’t too bad.

I bought the sealer from the same company who makes the Artist Grade Concrete Acid Stain I bought.

Everything was working GREAT and looking AWESOME until I got to the sealer stage. I waited 24 hours after staining as recommended, and it hadn’t rained for about 5 days. So, I thought the concrete was dry enough to seal. . It was not.
It rained heavily last night, and still raining today. I went to look how the porch is holding up and IT’S ALL MILKY WHITE!! So heavy in some spots that the brownish stain is barely visible.
I called the company. They said the concrete wasn’t dry enough. What I have is an efflorescence problem. Yuck!!!
The cust serv rep told me I need to strip the sealant. She said to rub it off using a stiff brush and acetone. That hardly worked at all … about 25% is stripped.
I can NOT use muriatic acid. At this point, I’m going to have to re-stain the steps, and their stain will NOT work if the concrete has been etched with muriatic acid (because their stain has an acid in it already).
Sooooo …. today I’ve been orbital sanding the fucker with 80 grit sandpaper, pouring a little acetone and TSP directly on the steps. That seems to be working. BUT IT”S SLOW. Took me three hours to do ONE step … the only one so far.
(Edit: One commentor on a website said he used Acetone also to no avail but, Xylene worked great. It looks like the same shit to me … and I’m fucken tired of pissing away money on this project, so I haven’t tried it.)
So, YEAH, if you have any other ideas that would be GREAT!
BTW, I’m not pissed at the company. The porch is about 60 years old. God only knows what the fuck is going on inside there chemically. As I said, it looked friggin awesome …. until the sealing.
Yep, water and sealer do not mix. I strongly suspect that the rain is a bigger problem than the concrete not being dry enough. This is the wrong time of year for sealing concrete. Warm dry days are much better but you’re on a schedule.
Two things I’d try. Pick a small area that looks bad. Tent it in such a way that you an put a heater with a fan in place to help warm and dry one area. A large cardboard box that you can fit a heter under would be perfect. Just protect the box from rain. Quite often a few days of warm dry weather would correct a milky look caused by rain on fresh sealer. It could be that simple. The trick will be in protecting it from more rain and warming it up and drying it out. Once the moisture evaporates it should go clear again.
Also, toluene might be a better solvent. I have no experience with xylene.
If the issue were efflorescence, the acid in the stain should have taken care of that. We ALWAYS acid washed concrete with muriatic before sealing it to prevent efflorescence. I’d have to do some digging to be sure but efflorescence shouldn’t be an issue with concrete as old as yours.
Push comes to shove you could paint the concrete. By the time it starts to look bad you’ll be down the road.

Well, that doesn’t make much sense IMO. Once the water evaporates, just like the VOC’s in the sealer, they’re gone. Concrete will ALWAYS have moisture in it. It’s porous and will accumulate moisture from the ground below that will migrate upwards. Cover your concrete basement floor with a sheet of visqueen and come back a week later. You’ll see what I mean. I think the sealer just got rained on before it was dry.
Anywho, if you’re going to wire brush the whole thing then go rent or buy a 90 degree angle grinder and some wire brush attachments and get her done! Vaya con dios my friend!

It’s a bright sunny day today. I held a heat gun to one small section of the Milky White Shit (MWS) for 20 minutes. Dry as a fucken bone. The MWS is still there, hard as a rock … a permanent white stain on top of my leather brown stain. Fuckers.
It absolutely positive did NOT rain after I put the sealer on. It rained a couple days later. The sealer dries in a couple hours …. the MWS appeared BEFORE it rained. In other words, right after it dried it turned into MWS.
Bottom line: I’m fucked and I must strip off all the sealer … and in so doing almost 100% of the stain is gone as well. That’s probably hard to believe as well cuz I was told that once the stain is on the concrete for 48 hours, and after it’s sealed, that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of the stain. It supposedly becomes “one” with the concrete. Bullshit! The stain is gone!! Basically starting from scratch. Working with concrete is a fucking clusterfuck experience for me.
fyi ….. I couldn’t fine toulene at HD. However, they did have xylene. THAT stuff works!! It took a couple hours of rubbing and scraping to get the sealer off using Acetone. I did another step this morning using xylene. Done in 20 minutes.
Everything will be stripped bare by end of day today. Will wait 24-48 hours of consecutive no rain days. Reapply the stain. And wait to seal in the SPRING … using the sealer you recommended, not the shit I got now. Thanks for everything.
