Cash went through a lot and changed a lot during his life, three of my favorites from the last part of it.

I told my wife a long time ago she’ll know when we’re rich because the only thing I will ever wear again will be black.

Cash was money.

That last one, “Hurt”, still gets to me when I hear it. He had so much tragedy in his life – when he lost his wife I thought he would be gone shortly.
I was in Nashville airport one time and heard a small commotion behind me. There was Johnny and June, he was catching a flight and she was apparently staying behind. As he kissed her goodbye the love just flowed across the terminal.
I thought about walking over for an autograph but decided to respect their privacy, such as a public figure ever has in public places. Maybe I made the right choice.

Cash reminds me of AM radio in dusty old grain trucks, pick ups full of kids and hard working men with dirt under their finger nails and matriarchs in homes that smelled of soiled boots, pipe tobacco and fresh baking.
