You might be surprised at the way the US got it’s sex ed info. I have mentioned the Unitarians before, and surprisingly enough, they actually teach the birds and the bees. The program, taught in Sunday School, is called Our Whole Lives (OWL), and amazingly it stresses RELATIONSHIPS. How having sex is really the creation of a (hopefully) life-long relationship; how it should not be done carelessly, heedlessly, or out of boredom; how it is done; and some of the variations (including homosexuality, in non-judgement).
On the one hand, it is not the traditional mores (homosexuality is evil, per the Bible) and it is not, in my opinion, honest enough about the drawbacks of casual sex (including the devaluation of a truly profound experience on the soul / character of the practitioners of casual sex). But they do teach about STDs, unwanted pregnancy and contraception, how relationships are more important than brief relief of sexual frustration, and how masturbation can prevent getting involved too young with someone you don’t really want to live with.
My falling out with the Unitarians was more over their politics (relentlessly liberal) than anything else. In this one area I think they are actually ahead of most of society, which teaches youth sex by rumor, ill-informed peer narratives and unrealistic pornography.
To answer Stucky,
(1) In junior high I saw a girl I liked who told me she was married. I asked my friend Dennis how she could be married in 7th grade, and his reply was “I guess she got screwed”. Subsequent discussions clarified and connected a lot of previously uncorrelated remarks, images, information and data that had accumulated, unconnected, over the previous fifteen years or so.
(2) If the parents are smart, they will gradually inform the child as per their ability to understand. If not, school instruction can be useful (all the 7th grade girls (or maybe sixth) got special health classes the boys did not attend for some reason; yet the boys got no special instruction that I can recall. Having seen it firsthand, I would suggest that the Our Whole Lives curriculum be investigated (and if necessary, SLIGHTLY modified if absolutely necessary) and adapted to school use; the Unitarians cover lots of material, and it seems to work for their kids fairly well.
(3) Yes, there is hope; it comes in many calibers, lengths and varieties, but they will have to put it to use before long if they are to succeed.
