Finding Some Pre-Apocalyptic R & R

Last year I was fortunate enough to RV down the Northwestern Pacific Coast with some friends and family; then do some boating, fishing, swimming, and jet-skiing at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Next, however, I will be renting a property on a beach with private ocean access.

U.S. Virgin islands, St. Thomas or St. John. The wife and I have been there 3 times. We took the kids for a week when the youngest graduated high school 4 years ago. It was one of the best trips ever. Stayed at an all inclusive, so the kids could come and go as they pleased.

So much to see and do there, some of the best beaches in the world, english speaking. For a few dollars you can take water taxis to any of about 15 other islands including some british ones that are off the beaten path.

Yucatan peninsula and Belize are cheaper and easier to get to, but nowhere near as nice imo.

The Áncash region of Perú: https://www.tripadvisor.com.ar/Tourism-g2656665-Ancash_Region-Vacations.html

If you’re a fan of the outdoors, trekking, mountaineering, the “Switzerland of Perú” is affordable and fascinating. I have the use of a house there and go whenever I can. Very friendly folks, mainly Spanish speakers but some Quechua as well. Some English. It’s an overnight bus ride from Lima, where great food is to be found and some good beaches as well.

Uncola,

I’m going to get a pile of shit thrown at me but:

South Africa

Ya. I know – politically it is a mess – but it is BEAUTIFUL and, once you are there, very inexpensive.

Last time we were there we spent the first week at a lodge in a place called St. Lucia on the Indian Ocean. Family of four at the lodge, two meals a day (we ate supper out), laundry service and we created our own tours each day for about five days for about $1500.00 US That’s everything – activities, food, accomodations etc.

The big problem is the expense of getting there. You can get their cheapish but you gotta be Johny on the Spot with flights.

Once you’re there and you’ve seen it, you’ll want to go back over and over again.

Home to some of the worlds largest vegitated sand dunes – Cape Vidal:

Game drives galor are availabel too. And lots of other activities – too many to list. And its all beautiful.

Foxy,
I’ve never been there but based on reports from people who have I’d agree with you.
A guy I know was a retired army colonel who spent several years there as a junior military attache.
Until he got too old to travel he and his wife went back every year to see old friends and travel the country.
I remember he raved about the train rides thru the game parks and across the countryside.

Yes – it lives in you once you’ve been there. I should also add that you have NOT experienced hospitality until you have spent time with the Afrikaner people. They are extremely gracious, humble and friendly folks who endeavored to always make us feel as though we were more than just guests but rather a part of their families. I can’t wait to go back. If it wasn’t for their basket case of a political system I’d probably retire there.

West central Florida,Tampa and 50 or so miles north & south. All year is ok but early Oct to mid May is better, the heat is usually not as bad, with Oct to late Nov the best because it is the off season.
Fishing, diving, spearfishing, water sking in the Gulf.Within 50 miles of many lakes and several canoeable rivers with the same activities as salt water.
Plenty of wildlife viewing,hunting,photography,birdwatching.
Lots of moderately priced or free state/county parks for outdoor activities.Lots of free hiking trails.
Plenty of moderately priced restaurants.
Within 90/120 minutes of most major attractions.

San Salvador.
You will pick up lots of tips for post apocalypse.
In fact, it will be safer there once the Zombie Apocalypse does happen.
And pupusas.

For relaxing I always enjoyed an Algonquin Park 2 week canoe trip in mid October, deserted, no bugs, bears are fat.

@ Miles – I don’t blame you and that crossed my mind as well. No problemo. However, after thinking about it, I considered how TBP is not “everybody” on the net and if I ever went back to places I have previously enjoyed, or to new venues, only to discover more like-minded people there, I would consider it a bonus. Especially, if the SHTF during the time I was there. Just my two cents.

Anyways, thank you to everyone else for all of your input above. Some places mentioned heretofore I have already experienced, but most I have not. Some really great prospects there and several I would not have considered prior.

Thanks again. I ‘preciate y’all. Every one of ya’s. Even you Miles.

Central and eastern Idaho. It’s about as close to remote Alaska as you can get. A man can find real solitude and grandeur there. The incredible vistas alone will clear your mind and cause to forget your earthly troubles. Be well prepared though as services and amenities can be pretty limited.

Westerern NH in spring summer and fall where my camp is. Waterfront with dock and boat on 75 acre clean cold pond, fishing, swimming, hiking. Bring the velcro dogs (I have 3). Tubing, boating, firepit. Off grid with PV water and electric. 25 minutes to get eggs and syrup from hardscramble. Private road/trail to get there. My heaven on earth, especially when my velcro GSD is by my side.

“Who can afford a vacation?”

Those of us who worked for it. Those of us who earned it and those of us who saved money to pay cash for it.

Don’t think I’d like to go to most parts of Africa although I had a blast in Morocco back in the eighties. There’s still too many places I want to see here in western ‘Murica.

Dennis seems upset.
Should we crowd fund a holiday for him?
If somebody can figure out a good place to send him I will donate a quarter.
