Remember we took in almost the entire 9th ward from Katrina…..and that culture of dependency has been very hard to stamp out.
The reports of looting have been greatly overstated. We have the entire Texas National Guard here (with bullets in their guns) as well as most people are heavily armed. There will be some looting by the usual suspects in the usual parts of town, but we should not see anything like Katrina.
Somehow, there are Marines in amphibious troop carriers in Friendswood, 15 miles from my house. We are high and dry, by the way, in spite of 36″ of rain. Workplace, however, flooded out…lot’s of cleaning and restoration to do!

The rain has passed. There are patches of blue sky and sunshine above.
And the rivers and creeks continue to rise. Whole area’s which were dry until yesterday, are now being evacuated. It looks like a scene from a sci-fi movie where the entire population of an area is all walking out with a bag under their arm.
The head of the Houston flood control agency was just on the air. A levee in the Inverness area ( North of BW8, between I-45 and the Hardy Toll road ) is in danger of collapsing. The overflow is eroding the bank and they can’t get there to shore it up.
The report now is that their are 250 shelters open in the area. That doesn’t count the untold thousands who have evacuated to hotels or the homes of friends/relatives. It may be months to years before some people get back. Hell, they’re saying if we don’t get another drop of rain, it may take 6 weeks or more to drain down a couple of the reservoirs.
Overnight, Harvey made landfall again, near the TX/LA border. We’re hearing they got 20″ of rain overnight. It goes without saying, but I-10 is underwater and closed.
Last night, a local chemical plant lost power. One of their chemicals was in danger of exploding if they couldn’t get it cooled down. Thankfully, they got that under control overnight.
Current forecast say some of these rivers/creeks will be out of their banks until next week.
When we’re talking about these rivers flooding, bear in mind they are breaking all historic records ever kept for these events. The ‘new’ flooding near the reservoirs are the overflow area’s. These area’s haven’t flooded in the 70 some-odd years since they were built.
Officially, we were just under 52″ of rain. Some local areas exceeded 60″ from Harvey. Yup, that’s 5 feet of rain in about 4 days.
Personally, we’re fine here. We are beyond thankful to come through this unscathed. We will continue to work to help others who have been less fortunate.

While hundreds/thousands of people have rushed into Houston following the epic destruction of Hurricane Harvey to help in any way possible, others have once again predictably chosen to exploit the misery of others by looting abandoned shopping centers, robbing empty homes and even breaking into the Houston Apple Store (by shooting through the front door).
In fact, just last night Houston’s Mayor was forced to impose a strict midnight to 5am curfew amid “an outbreak of looting and armed robberies”, in order to prevent property crimes against evacuated homes in the city. As Reuters notes, the curfew came after, among other things, reports surfaced of people impersonating police officers all so they could tell residents to evacuate their homes and then promptly rob them blind.
That proved too little for county officials who set up their own location as an outbreak of looting and armed robberies prompted the city to order an indefinite curfew from midnight to 5 a.m. (0500 to 1000 GMT).
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said late Tuesday individuals impersonating police officers knocked on doors in at least two parts of the city telling residents to evacuate their homes.
Meanwhile, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo hosted a press conference earlier this morning to warn residents that his force is not going to tolerate criminals taking advantage of people in the community and that he is working with the district attorney to strengthen penalties for looting and is encouraging judges and juries to impose the maximum penalties possible. Per ABC 13 of Houston:
He said his officers arrested 14 alleged looters since Sunday. Those arrested will face stiffer punishments under a Texas law providing heftier penalties during a crisis, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Burglarizing a home would normally bring a penalty of two to 20 years in prison, but now brings five years to life. “This is the state of Texas. He said he will push for the fullest prosecution possible for any crimes committed during such a sensitive time.
The Police Chief said his officers arrested a crew of armed criminals robbing members of the Houston community on Monday night. “They found them after a pursuit and took them into custody. He said officers also caught three looters at a Game Stop Monday night.”
The owner of the Bronze Bar in Houston also shared a photo of her business with smashed windows writing, “My business that I’ve worked hard for was looted last night. I can’t believe people are capable of this.”

In the imadiate aftermath the city announced police and fire are stranded and hospital staffs néed assistance so all us redneck racist basturds jumped in the truck put it in 4 low and delivered nurses to hospitals , meals to the elderly , transported patients to dialysis etc…
The following year I worked some rigging and scaffolding jobs where a laborer proudly spoke about how he got all new shit for his apartment , his excuse was : “THEY acted like THEY wanted you to do it (loot and steal) because THEY said on the news the police can’t get to you ”
