The racist subtext of Philly’s ban on convenience store protective glass barriers

I posted about this proposal a few weeks ago, thinking it was a joke and no one in their right mind would pass it as a law. I was badly mistaken. The fucking dimwitted liberal scum on the Phila City Council passed it overwhelmingly. And the brain dead asshole mayor is going to sign it. He’s a ball-less wonder. Why is it that only Asians run these businesses in a city where the overwhelming population is black? Where are all those black Obama entrepreneurs? The Asian shop owners should just close up and move to the suburbs where the dindus won’t shoot them dead for beer and smokes.

Via American Thinker

Shopkeepers in Philadelphia’s neighborhood convenience stores that serve food and beverages, locally referred to as “beer delis,” face a legal prohibition on the thick glass barriers around cashiers that protect them from stickup artists wielding guns, knives, and other weapons.  Because the shopkeepers predominately are Asian, and the customers (and robbers) are mostly black, this imbroglio looks a lot like a racist quest for vengeance against a commercially successful minority group.

Julie Shaw of the Philadelphia Inquirer provides the details:

Despite strong opposition from Asian American beer deli owners and their supporters, Philadelphia City Council voted, 14-3, Thursday to approve a bill that most members said would enhance neighborhoods, but that the merchants fear could jeopardize their safety and livelihood.

Mayor Kenney’s office said he would sign the bill.

City Councilwoman Cindy Bass introduced the bill Nov. 2 as part of an effort to rid the city of what she has called illegal stop-and-go outlets. Although much of the bill involves categorizing food establishments by size for city licensing purposes, one paragraph generated huge protests and polarized communities, exposing fissures involving race, class, and perceptions of immigrants.

That paragraph called for banning bullet-resistant windows in large food establishments. Beer deli owners were affected because state law requires them to have at least 30 seats. Many of the owners, who are largely Asian American, decried the bill, saying removing the safety windows would expose them to being robbed, injured, or killed. But Bass called such windows, which separate food servers from customers, “an indignity.”

On Dec. 4, Council’s Committee on Public Health and Human Services amended the bill, removing the mandatory window ban on large establishments, and instead instructing the Department of Licenses and Inspections to issue by Jan. 1, 2021, regulations for “the use or removal of any physical barrier” in places that serve food and alcohol. The amended bill was unanimously approved that day by the committee.

This leaves the shopkeepers at the mercy of inspectors, who can decide on their own which protective barriers will not be permitted.  They have every reason to be concerned:

Mouy Chheng, the first to speak against, said her 19-year-old son was fatally shot by two armed robbers at the family’s South Philly convenience store in 2003 when it did not have a bullet-resistant window.

Peter Ly, a West Philly beer deli owner who made news after he was shot three times in December 2011 when he went to deposit money at a Cheltenham bank, told Council of another incident a decade ago when he was shot six times during a gunpoint robbery at a beer deli he then owned on Lehigh Avenue in North Philadelphia with no bullet-resistant window. He has a partition in his current business.

If you take down my bulletproof glass,” he said, “I will not be lucky next time.”

City Councilman David Oh, a Korean American who has opposed the bill specifically because business owners could be ordered to remove their safety-glass windows, said he feared removing them could increase crime and cause more proprietors to buy guns. “I will not expose [beer deli owners] or anyone else to the risk that they could be killed,” he said.

The stated reasons for opposition to the protective devices are aesthetic – that they create an undesirable atmosphere – and ideological – that the “beer delis” put out harmful, addictive substances (beer!).  The latter reason presumes that if the delis are driven out of business, then neighborhoods will be free of alcohol abuse – an approach that has been proven futile by the progressives’ attempt at national prohibition of alcohol.

If the Department of Licenses and Inspections, in its infinite wisdom, decides to prohibit most or all of the protective barriers, stand by for complaints of “food deserts” as shop owners  close up and move to locales outside the city limits of Philadelphia, where their lives are less endangered.

People who have been paying attention to urban life for the past few decades realize that Asian-Americans who open stores in black neighborhoods are subject to intense resentment because black store-owners have failed to materialize in large numbers, and because shopkeepers guard against theft, regarded by some on the left as a social justice activity, redistributing wealth to the victims of society.

This will not end well.

I’m curious, it being an element of my nature, are the beer deli owner’s residents of the city? If not, they are not the city council’s first priority. Most of the small urban stores I’m familiar with survive on their EBT terminal and lottery machine. They aren’t creating jobs; they are for the most part just selling cheap food products with the US taxpayer footing the bill.

Businesses don’t exist to create jobs. They exist to make money by providing a product or service people are willing to pay for. Who gives a fuck where the owners live? Hopefully these stores will all close or move across the street from Philly jurisdiction.

You think you’re being clever, but do you have a point in there somewhere? You libs wouldn’t let us cut off the EBT, so stop being disingenuous. Not every person who shops at these stores uses EBT and even I wouldn’t begrudge every person who does use it (most, maybe, but not all). So it’s good for the residents that the stores exist. Convenience stores are convenient. The reason they sell beer and chips is because that’s what the customers want. If they wanted organic kale, that’s what the stores would sell. The stupid cunt who proposed this ordinance expects the store workers to risk their lives. Fuck that shit. If the local residents had any inclination of ever working at such a store, they’d want the bulletproof glass, too. Anyone who votes for this dumb cunt councilwoman deserves to have to pay for a cab to get to stores in the suburbs.

Ok, so I was stabbed and robbed by a couple jigaboos in newcastle delaware. Even the hospital greeting desk had a bulletproof glass partition. Which is way more obnoxious than at a bank or deli. Funny how shit like that never pops up in predominantly racist, er white, neighborhoods. Maybe, just maybe, the negro is at least partially at fault. Hard not to be at least a tad racist when faced with facts. You see its not just philly where barriers are needed, it has more to do with where the negroes are.

It seems the city is spending 40 million $ on camera’s everywhere because 98% of all shootings are done by blacks and 95% of all fatal shootings are done by blacks there.
The good ol ACLU is going to sue the city for exposing the truth and they don’t want to lose the idiot white tourists that waste their $$ there in a 3 block radius to drink beer, puke in the streets and see small titties on trannys.

A good example of disparity exists in retail establishments in urban areas for good reason. . . .the “vibrant (ghetto) culture” is responsible for the disparities…of course, naming “the elephant in the room” will subject one to accusations of (gasp!) “racism”–I DON’T CARE.
Compare hardware stores in urban areas and suburban / rural areas.
The suburban / rural hardware store has everything out in the open. Customers are free to pick and choose, examine the merchandise, take it to the cashier and purchase their products. Help is readily available.
The urban hardware store has everything behind bullet-resistant barriers. One cannot even purchase a twenty-five cent plumbing fitting without having to ask for it. The employees are safely sequestered behind these barriers and may be unwilling to venture beyond them. Quite often, a security guard is posted at the door to “inspect” purchases and act as a deterrent to “shoplifting”.
On a personal note, my local (rural) hardware store experienced a power outage. The proprietor of the store gave incoming customers flashlights so that they could shop while power was being restored. Try doing that in an urban hardware store. Both flashlights and merchandise would be picked clean . . .

My condolences and sympathies go out to the families of the future victims of the violence they will have to endure, because they will have to remove the protections of the plexiglass windows to satisfy someone’s feelings of disrespect.

Maybe the community will realize their mistake when they find they will have to drive miles out of their neighborhoods just for a pack of smokes and beer, due to the sudden closings of convenience stores for safety reasons.

Why is it that only Asians run these businesses in a city where the overwhelming population is black?

Various reasons.

Recent Asian arrivals cannot be expected to know, in-depth, about the history of American racial relations and how certain cities have less than desirable areas. In 2017, with the Internet and Asian news sources at times citing such events, it’s likelier new Asian immigrants will have at least some knowledge, all the more if they have relatives and/or friends who were here first and tell them.

But in some cases, Asian immigrants who know about the potential perils of opening shop either in such cities or in these neighborhoods have little choice. They can only afford so much in rent and in overhead, and these areas tend to be easier on the wallet. But what they save in money they lose in peace. Asian immigrants who have take-out restaurants, delis, cleaners, laundromats, and other such shops in mostly or fully white (or white & Asian, or even predominantly Asian) areas have less crime to worry about. Even in 90%-95% or 95%+ white upper-middle-class towns in the greater NYC area, where such violence is nonexistent, Asian immigrants do run such enterprises (with, expectably, none of the hazards that these Asians in Philadelphia face).

Parallel with the potentially limited knowledge of race relations is the possibility that Asian immigrants may not know that many inner-city blacks resent and even hate them. They may know a bit about injustices blacks suffered in the past, but may (naively) think that since Asians played no role in perpetrating those injustices, blacks wouldn’t target Asians.

Another problem for Asians is that Asian immigrants are often smaller than both whites and blacks in physical size, which makes them theoretically easier victims, and theirs is a shame culture whereby dealing with the police is embarrassing (unless one is the victim), even if one fights back in legitimate self-defense. Asians often likewise have a limited command of English and shy away from contacting law enforcement. All these factors work against Asians.

This is why the late 1980s/early 1990s (for those old enough to remember) witnessed vicious boycotts by blacks in Brooklyn against Korean grocers, some of whom went out of business and others went back to Korea. This does not mean Asian immigrants are never wrong or rude or what not to black customers – but in general, as long as they refrain from crime (Asian organized crime syndicates have always existed), Asians tend to be quiet, to work hard, and to move up the socioeconomic ladder. Whites and conservatives of various races point to Asian success as proof that “racist” America isn’t that racist after all, and this infuriates liberal Democrats as well as the blacks who agree with the Democrats’ agenda.

I will keep an eye on these developments in Philadelphia. Any Asian shopkeeper shot dead by robbers following this will have his/her blood on the hands of the 14 who voted in favor of this measure.

  The Modern Chronicler

But they don’t in the least mind the “blood on their hands” as long as the causative factor was derived from ideologically pure socialist/communist motives. It’s really all coming out in the open in some of the “niggertowns” east of the Mississippi. Fortunately at this point it’s only local; if the Beast had been elected the plan was for a national rollout of all the insanity.

The Modern Chronicler
The Modern Chronicler
  A. R. Wasem
December 19, 2017 1:38 pm

Those who are on the left do not mind having “blood on their hands” because from their comfortable and safe existences, whether Ivory Tower or gated community, the leaders of these circles never need to face the consequences of their policies. Minimum wage hikes, unemployment amongst low-skilled workers up? Who cares – the agenda was fulfilled. Minority shopkeepers shot dead by inner-city “youths?” Who cares – the agenda won. Perpetuating and protecting the violation of U.S. immigration laws so that nonwhite aliens can come in, even if some kill Americans? Who cares – the agenda is what matters.

To the left, one – and one thing alone – matters: the agenda.

Women/LGBT/latinos/blacks who question the agenda, “convert” into conservatives, disagree openly: they are ostracized, abandoned, and called racists/bigots/sexists/homophobes/Nazis.

The more they do this, however, the greater the backlash. President Trump was the first major backlash. More and more are being red-pilled and seeing the thorough hypocrisy of the left. I am hopeful even if idiotic developments like this Philadelphia story occur along the way.

Three points:
1. If the Asian merchants feel pressured to sell and leave, they will have to sell their properties at a loss since no one else will be eager to risk a business there without plexiglas. Who would benefit from that? Slumlords who convert the property to 2-3 small Section 8 apartments? Black merchants who might be willing to take the risk to reopen the store?
2. My primary theory is that right before the ordinance takes effect there will be a renewed push to rescind it. Money will pour into City Council campaign accounts and BAM! just like magic Council will vote to rescind the ordinance. BRILLIANT piece of “political leadership.”
3. Has anyone noticed that this ordinance does NOT apply to any other kind of business or office that customarily serve the same people in the same neighborhoods and typically have bulletproof glass? Gas stations, banks, check cashing stores, pharmacies, auto license plate businesses, cash only cell phone stores, smoke shops, AND BEST OF ALL: city, state and federal government offices!!! (My police district HQ got bulletproof glass after an officer was shot in the neck and nearly killed while taking a report in the lobby.) If it is a racist indignity for local residents to go into a deli that has bulletproof glass why isn’t it just as much a racist indignity to go into other places similarly equipped in the same neighborhood? Shouldn’t the ordinance be expanded to include a blanket ban on bulletproof glass everywhere in the city? I’m sure that argument will be made in the future successful effort to rescind the ordinance (see #2).

I have seen this in my own city and many other. Racists blacks elect racist mayor who make racist laws claiming racism. They destroy property values and whites sell everything, their homes, businesses, land all at a tremendous loss. The blacks buy it for .10 cents on the dollar and the local area is in bliss until they realize how corrupt the govt is and the local churches all creating their own media to protect these blacks new found property from the roving black gangs until they cannot. In my own city years ago even the police quit out of fear and there was no police force. Was the Wild West in that city for 3 years! My grandmother sold a $185,000 home for $42,000. Today her home once beautiful is now looking like Haitian slum. No matter how much we give and help and become non racists they will take like locusts. Call me a racists but while you do don’t ignor the long history of empirical fact of what I just stated. Facts can only be racists to virtue signaling snowflakes with an anterior motive and narrative and that is in inherently racist agenda against whites. I personally and sick of tv shows talking about black culture and about the black community but if a white said anything near that they are labeled nazi kkk racists. Whites cannot have a culture, nor care about white causes cause that’s rayciss yet blacks can? That’s just fucked up.

I grew up in Detroit, and personally witnessed the destruction of a once-great city. There are a number of reasons for Detroit’s decline that have never been explored or discussed.
1. “Blockbusting” by greedy real estate agents. Real estate agents would send out postcards with the following: “A new family is moving into your neighborhood. If you want to sell your house, please call me at xxx-xxxx”. A “new family” was a euphemism for black families, and was used to “encourage” whites to sell their homes.
2. HUD (Housing and Urban Development) speculators and real estate hustlers conspired to “buy up” and raze the best houses on every block, in certain sections of the city. Quite often, “shacks” were left standing while decent housing was purchased by HUD and razed. This was done purposely to depress property values, to make it easier for speculators to purchase properties at “bargain basement” prices.
I realize that items 1 and 2 counteract each other and are at cross purposes, but they were a reality in 1960s Detroit.
3. The 1967 riots did much to push whites out of Detroit. A little-known aspect of the Detroit riots was the application of spray-painted words on the exteriors of black-owned businesses. The words “soul brother” was spray-painted on businesses owned by blacks so that the “angels of death” (actually rioters) would spare them from destruction. Whole white-owned business districts around the city were destroyed, never to regain their former selves.
4. The election of Coleman Alexander Young, Detroit’s first black mayor, who was overtly racist to Detroit’s white citizens while “getting along just fine” with the “movers and shakers” (big business people) of the day (as long as the campaign donations kept coming in)….
5. The abolition of the STRESS (Stop The Robberies, Enjoy Safe Streets) program. This anti-criminal program was put in by mayor Young’s predecessor and was quite successful in “cleaning up the streets” of criminals. In this program, police officers would disguise themselves as vulnerable old people and walk through neighborhoods as “decoys”. Predatory criminals would attempt to rob these elderly citizens and quite often, were dispatched to “the great hereafter”. One of mayor Young’s campaign promises was the abolition of the STRESS program as too many of “his people” were being eliminated. Upon the election of Young, the program was disbanded.
These are 5 reasons for this once-great city’s demise.

Looking into my crystal ball:
Many of these businesses will simply shut their doors rather than face certain death, taking with them their tax dollars. Though they are no doubt cheating heavily on these taxes, revenues from property and city sales taxes will dip yet again, as with the brilliant soda tax, and the city will be left struggling to account for another massive budget shortfall that “they couldn’t see coming”. The city will then try another foolish scheme to generate revenue to fund the pensions of the worthless tax-feeders that run the inefficient bureaucracy and make things still worse. So the cycle goes…like a giant turd spiraling down the toilet.
