Mitt Romney Announces He Is Running For US Senate

As he widely telegraphed several weeks ago, on Friday morning Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, formally announced he will run for Senate in Utah: “I am running for United States Senate to serve the people of Utah and bring Utah’s values to Washington” he tweeted.

Romney’s full statement is below:

Today, Governor Mitt Romney announced his candidacy to represent Utah in the United States Senate.

“Utahns are known for hard work, innovation, and our can-do pioneering spirit. I am running for United States Senate because in these trying times there is no better moment to bring Utah’s values to Washington. Utah’s economic and political success is a model for our nation; I am ready to fight for this great state and advocate for solutions that improve the lives of Utahns,” said Romney.

In the coming months, Romney plans to visit each of the state’s 29 counties to talk with Utahns about their priorities, issues, and concerns. Utah’s dual-track nomination process includes gathering signatures for a June primary and participating in the caucus and convention system. Romney plans to participate in both the signature gathering process and the state GOP convention in April.

As NBC notes, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee will aim to replace 83-year-old Sen. Orrin Hatch in November’s election. The longtime senator announced his retirement in January even as Trump pushed him to run again.

Romney, 70, has a a strong chance to win the seat later this year. Though not a consistent Utah resident in years past, he has strong name recognition and is considered popular in the state. Romney is a Mormon who helped to reorganize the scandal-plagued 2002 Olympics Games in Salt Lake City.

The former governor would bring strong name recognition and influence as a first-term senator. While former aides expect Romney to push for conservative policies in the Senate, they also believe he will rebuke the president when necessary and potentially clash with him on some policies.

Romney likely would have backed the Republican tax law passed in December. But he may break with Trump on topics like relations with Russia and immigration.

Romney heavily criticized then-candidate Trump in a 2016 speech, calling him a “phony” and a “fraud.” He warned that Trump would cause economic instability and endanger Americans abroad.

Later, Romney unsuccessfully interviewed to be Trump’s secretary of State. Since, he has publicly rebuked Trump when he supported Roy Moore, the Alabama Senate candidate accused of sexually abusing teenagers, and when the president reportedly questioned why the U.S. needed immigrants from “s—hole” African countries.

If he wins the seat and criticizes Trump while in office, he would mark a stark shift from Hatch. Hatch has heaped praise on the president in recent months, calling him a “heck of a leader” after the GOP passed its tax plan in December. Trump reportedly begged the 83-year old Hatch to run for re-election one more time.

Before entering politics, Romney led investment firm Bain Capital, a spin-off of Bain & Company. After his role in the Utah Olympics, he served as Massachusetts governor from 2003 to 2007

Romney unsuccessfully ran for president in 2008 before winning the GOP nomination in 2012.

Yes, but that’s not all of it. The RINOs want him in the Senate, and the state Repub party likes him, so they are pushing for him. To summarize and echo some others, we see:
The power is in two specific units: the LDS Church and the Republican Party. If the Church wants it, it gets it, which can lead to some pretty weird things: mixed drinks cannot be observed in construction in public restaurants, apparently because that might encourage alcoholism, or something; so there’s a partition, the “Zion Curtain”, between restaurant patrons and the person mixing the drinks. The state runs the liquor stores, and certain things (such as miniatures, like you could get on an airline) are not available. And various other irregularities, such as having a church seminar (“Institute of Religion”) across the street from nearly every high school, so the youth can be de-corrupted after classes. And so on and so forth, which goes hand in hand with:
The Republican Party, which has nearly every state office in Utah sewn up. Because the Party wants Mittens to run for Senator (thinking he’s a shoo-in) he is running, and because he’s Mormon he will win. Unless they catch him with a live girl or dead boy in his bed, that is. It really doesn’t matter who the Dems put up to try, the Repubs want Mittens and the Church will support him, so he will win. The Mormon faithful will vote as their bishops and apostles tell them to, it’s God’s will, don’t you know. The fact Mittens has only tenuous Utah roots (he did organize the successful 2002 Olympics, that’s true) but spent most of his years in Michigan and Massachutsetts won’t matter either. Nor will his Swamp creature globalist traits, which you’d think would be a negative, be enough to turn the sheep against him. And Bain Capital is a SELLING point to most of the business-friendly Mormon types around here.
So we are being pushed to vote for an out-of-state crony capitalist globalist for Senator so that Kentucky can have another representative in Congress. So the faithful will be told, so they will vote. It’s enough to make you despair for the future, if you understand what the globalists (like Soros, the Bushes, the Kennedys) have in store for us, if they can. And we do have a choice, but the word will be stifled as much as possible. We need some memes, like:
Mitt Romney’s RomneyCare led to ObamaCare nationwide. Do you really want to risk that again?
Why isn’t Mitt running in Massachutsetts? Wasn’t he Governor there?
Doesn’t Kentucky already have two Senators? Why give them three? (over a picture of Mitt / Mitch)

Since he was a Governor, but replaced by another now, he has recently had the support of the majority of voters, I’d say he stands a good chance of winning.

He will probably have the support of the Republican establishment as well, and any opposition from the Democrats will be a party based one, not an idealistic one. He should be quite acceptable to the Democrats and Republicans alike.

Another phony fraud masking as a conservative. The entitled silver spoon set stepping up to lead the country, really! The elite are truly apoplectic that Trump, like him or hate him, has the ear of the people, has unsettled their foundation and shown it is not a party affiliation issue. Similar to any other form of take over, the play book never changes; take from within. Romney is yet another play to destroy or neutralize Trump until the “Club” regains control. Whether you despise him or not, everyone should hope for Trump’s continued involvement. Destabilizing the embedded elite is job one. The country will survive in spite of Trump, we survived the Obama assault, and perhaps this stranglehold of leftist lunacy will fall into check. The middle is not a bad place to be.

Recent Democrat electoral trends indicate he may not have to deal with Trump for very long, maybe mostly just in helping to remove him.

To be determined. If they vote for this piece of shit – which they almost certainly will, they’ll deserve everything they get – not only as Utahans, but as Mormons. If they make this asshole the face of Mormonism – voting for him mainly because of his Mormonism, then it’s their own fault that people will RIGHTLY hate Mormons.

Anyone with ‘Bain Capital’ in their resume should be in prison not the US Senate but the Mormons will elect this corrupt phony because he belongs to their church.

Be nice though if Trump, as head of the party, put some people in the RNC with the cajones to expel creeps like Romney so he’d have to run as an independent and struggle to get on the ballot.

Romney’s tracked record at Bain overall was poor, he had a few big wins ( made stupid money) but the overwhelming majority of his deals were bad bets
He should wear a carpetbagger crown. Of course Utah will elect him, that state will join with Arizona to vote stupid.

You are absolutely correct on that one. Bain Capital are nothing more than carpetbaggers who take over a company, strip the assets, and layoff thousands of workers and cut the salaries of those remaining. And Romney was a big part of that. He is exhibit A as Douchebag of the year. I will lose all respect for Utah if they let a carpetbagger like this win the election.

He is going to run against Trump in the primaries for the 2020 presidential election, and when he fails to win the Republican slot, Romney will run as an independent to dilute the Republican vote – in the hope of throwing the election in favor of the Democrat candidate of the Uniparty.

Oh, whose afraid of the big, bad Romney? Eye roll…

The Senate race for Utah has such a low threshold for being interesting a 40-year old Baptist who campaigns on a platform of raising the alcohol content in beer containers from 3% to 4% and proclaims Mormon underwear have no magical powers of witchcraft would shock the Utah establishment.

Why does anybody care about a 70-year old Presidential loser is running for a Senate seat that’s being vacated by 83-year old whose retiring? If anybody thinks Romney has any relevance or is a power hitter in politics these days let me refer them to videos of the 2012 debates so they can snooze off the delusion.

The balance of power in the Senate, each State has only two so that makes them very, very powerful people with the ability to change the course and future of the nation with their single vote on very close votes.

Problem is, if you’re not in the Magic Underpants Club, you don’t have a chance here; unless it’s a highly localized office in SLC.
