German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrives in Washington this week to meet with President Donald Trump at a moment of tension in the transatlantic alliance. Discussions between the two leaders will likely feature some significant disagreements over issues such as the Iran nuclear deal, trade, climate change and military spending.

The German and American publics also have some different views about the current state of affairs between their two countries. Below are six charts on how Germans and Americans see one another and how German attitudes toward the United States have shifted in the Trump era.

1Americans think U.S.-German relations are in good shape, but Germans disagree. Roughly two-thirds of Americans say relations are good, compared with just 42% of Germans, according to polling conducted by Pew Research Center in the U.S. and by the Körber-Stiftung in Germany.

2German attitudes toward the U.S. have turned sharply negative in the Trump era. In Germany, attitudes toward the U.S. have followed a clear pattern over the past decade and a half. During the course of President George W. Bush’s two terms in office, confidence in his leadership and overall ratings of the U.S. declined among Germans amid strong opposition to key elements of Bush’s foreign policy. President Barack Obama, in contrast, was extremely well-regarded in Germany (although his ratings did decline somewhat following the National Security Agency eavesdropping scandal), and his presidency coincided with a rebound in America’s overall image. However, as our 2017 Global Attitudes Survey found, German views toward the U.S. have dropped once again since Trump’s election. Only 11% of Germans expressed confidence in Trump to do the right thing in world affairs in 2017, down from 86% for Obama in 2016. And just 35% said in 2017 that they had a favorable opinion of the U.S., compared with 57% the year before.

3Merkel gets positive reviews from Americans, especially Democrats. Since Pew Research Center first asked about Angela Merkel in the U.S. in 2006, three main findings have stood out. First, positive ratings for Merkel have consistently outweighed negative ones, and this was true again in 2017, when 56% of U.S. adults expressed confidence in her. Second, Merkel has become better known. In 2017, only 14% offered no opinion about the German leader, down from 31% as recently as 2012. Third, a partisan divide has emerged over Merkel. In 2012, there was virtually no difference in the views of Democrats and Republicans, but in 2017, 64% of Democrats had confidence in the chancellor, compared with 50% of Republicans.

4Many Germans see the U.S. as a top foreign policy partner; fewer Americans feel the same way about Germany. When asked which countries are their most important partners in global affairs, Germans name France more than any other country, but the U.S. is in the second spot. More than four-in-ten Germans say the U.S. is either their country’s first or second most important partner. Americans are much less likely to see Germany this way: Only 12% name Germany as one of America’s top two partners. Still, Germany does make the top four, trailing Great Britain and China and tying with Israel.

5Democrats are more likely than Republicans to see Germany as an important partner for foreign policy. While 21% of Democrats name Germany as one of America’s top two international partners, only 5% of Republicans feel this way. Democrats also take a more positive view of Germany’s role in world affairs – 52% of Democrats say Germany does the right amount to help solve global problems, compared with 31% of GOP supporters and 37% of independents.

6There are transatlantic differences about defense spending. Successive American presidents have called on NATO allies to spend more on security, and Trump has repeatedly pressed the issue. As our 2017 poll shows, there are significant differences between Americans and Germans on this topic, as well as significant partisan differences within the U.S.

A plurality of Americans (45%) say the country’s allies in Europe should spend more on their national defense, while 37% say spending levels should stay about the same and only 9% think they should be decreased. But there is a wide partisan gap on this issue, with 63% of Republicans calling for more spending from allies, compared with just 33% of Democrats. When Germans were asked about their own defense spending, only 32% of Germans want to see it increased; roughly half say it should stay where it is, while 13% want it cut.

Who gives a flying fuck about Germany? This is the country that doesn’t put oil drain plugs in their car engines anymore. They could never build a reliable tank engine, either, while we were using GMC Detroit 6-71 diesels, and they were relying upon horses to haul shit while we were building Jeeps and Studebaker 6X6 trucks. At least in their current state no one has to worry about them being a key player in the next world war.

No. The politicians surely would like us to be, but we are’nt. Not yet.

“Alternative für Deutschland” is running roughshod about established media and politics.

Merkel? History – she is a lame duck chancellor now, as you would call it. 1 and a half year, 2 years max, and she will be gone. And happy to be out – since she no longer wins elections, a lot of people of her own party are treating her with open disrespect. P u b l i c l y, mind you!

The left is cornered, their narratives are falling apart one by one. The more desperate they become, the more shrill they behave. Hush – do you hear the sound of Lefty’s dreams shattering? I love it!

And the Muzzies? Are mostly stabbing and slaughtering each other, their women and children, as they are wont to do, make no mistake. Or misbehaving antisemitically – Popcorn! More POPCORN!!! (No, I have no problem with The Chose Ones. But if something happens to t h e m, the media dare not even t r y to hide it! :))

@Stucky – I read about your father the other day, but had no time to comment then. So please accept my condolences now.

Thank you Herr Visitor.

Of course, you are absolutely correct. You are the voice of reason. I think the 6 charts are mostly bullshit. I didn’t have time to say why, so I just left a snarky comment.

Why bullshit? Well, it’s like this; here in ‘Murkika (the land of the FREE, haha) every single piece-of-shit politician, as well as every piece-of-shit MSM “reporter”, will – when giving their opinion about something – inevitably start their verbal diarrhea with “What the American people want … ” To which I often yell out at the screen (literally) “Fuck you ya asshole! How the fuck do you know what I want???!!!”

I say that because there no longer is One America (perhaps there never was one). There’s a kneegrow America. A Hispanic America. A free shit America. A government drone piece of shit America. A homo America. And several other America’s as well. In almost all cases, their views are NOT shared by me. So, I resent the shit out of anyone claiming to speak for America … and that goes all the way to POTUS, regardless of who is in charge.

And, as you pointed out, there are also several varied groups in Germany. Many Germanys also? So, these aggregate type charts mean absolutely nothing to me. In fact, they may be worse than nothing, because they are often misleading.

In fact, I have not really read the charts in depth – why? Because if you ask Americans or Germans such questions, 95 out of 100 have not enough knowledge or information to give a qualified answer.

And out of the 5 remaining, 4 answers are more or less politically or ideologically twisted or tainted. So, it is as you say – Bullshit.

Many Germanys? Alas, yes – I remember about making a comment in Michael Snyders Economiccollapse Blog about 8 – 10 years ago, praising the high level of bipartisanship in german politics. Almost all gone now, the only common ground among the established parties is their blinding hate of the AfD.

The saying here is: everything that happens in the US happens in Germany, about 20 years later. So the splitting of society, the deepening of trenches will continue in my opinion. No so much among ethnic lines, but ideological lines – left, middle, right, green.

But I feel like you – the seams of society are coming apart.

Merkel gets positive reviews from Americans, especially Democrats

Merkel is the single most responsible person to destroy western Europe; without firing a shot, Musloids will control western Europe in 20 years.

Of course Democrats give Meercat positive reviews – they are stupid.

Interesting article. Here is my response to Germany: Go piss up a rope. Germany is neither friend nor ally. It is a semi-dictatorship run by a gang of lunatic leftist shits and “former” Communists. Merkel herself was a flag-waving Commie. Sure they loved Obama. For the same reason they stand around in their pockets while their women are raped by a horde of sub-humans they invited into their country. Germany is a country that started out pretty weird and now, after the trauma of WWII, is simply evil. Full disclosure: We played a major role in brining this about with our calculated destruction of German patriotism and pride. It is too late now to do anything about it, though. Germany should be regarded by all Americans as a potentially dangerous and utterly alien police state.

Europeans are like the hangers on who pal around ghetto bred multi millionaire athletes. They are not allies they are parasites. That said, Americans are fools who pay those parasites to be our “friends”. USA needs to wise up.

Why this article? Hmmm
Gauging the depth of the knowledge that the US has been the front of the bad guys for a long time? Basically seeing how nationalism is progressing? Yep. Conspiratorial.

There are many in the US with German ancestry so I think there’s a general positive ness. I think most view the actual country as sort of European Disneyland (like the other countries) where you go to see old stuff in beautiful settings.
The Germans/ Austrians whatever I’ve actually met (mostly in business) seem just fine. There used to be a thread somewhere on Europeans talking about American tourists and it was hilarious. White tennis shoes.

How can I look upon the German government in a favorable light? Merkel is ex-Stasi, their government jumps to Klaus’ orders and they are overrun by musloid scarecrows. I love the German people and their quality products but they are as big a slaves as we to the Zionists. Sad what has happened to the world, I don’t need to tell you who to blame.

Germans think that Americans are ignorant and dumb and wear Hawaiian shirts and sneakers.

Americans think that Germans are obedient and dumb and wear dirndl or lederhosen.
