PHILADELPHIA (WTXF) – Philadelphia police say a 5-year-old boy and his 14-year-old sister were wounded in a shooting while trick-or-treating in the city’s Olney section.
It happened on the 5700 block of Hope Street around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, where a bucket filled with candy laid spilled onto the ground into the morning.
The 5-year-old was shot once in the left leg and the 14-year-old suffered a graze wound to the right leg. Both victims were taken to Einstein Hospital where they are listed in stable condition. Both are expected to survive.
Philadelphia Police Commissioner Ross says the gunfire broke a bone in the 5-year-old boy’s leg.
Police believe they were caught in the crossfire of two men police say were shooting at a third man as they ran down the block.
“The big issue with this is how callous somebody could be that you see the children, you know they’re trick or treating, and that you could be so evil that you don’t care that they’re standing there,” Commissioner Ross said, “You just want to shoot somebody so badly, and in this case you end up shooting two innocent children.”
Bullets also shattered the windows of a truck parked in front of the spot where the victims were walking and police say a bullet also went through the back room of a home. No one inside was hurt. The suspects took off running. Neither weapon has been found. One of the suspects was wearing a red and white scarf over his face.

Yeah. It’s all great in Philly. Just because murders are tracking at the highest rate in 11 years, doesn’t mean anything. All is well. They are good people.

Not the point Jim. You want people who live in Philly to take responsibility for their living spaces. You want them to clean up the 30 blocks of squalor. And all of this so you don’t have to drive through it to get to work. Well, some people are doing exactly that and still you can’t stop the cretins from coming onto your street. You can’t stop the crack dealers, you can’t stop the whores, and you can’t stop the gang bangers. So you have to take the law into your own hands. You have to protect what you have built. Even if it isn’t all that great. Because the cops surely are not going to do one damned thing to protect what is yours.
I just think it’s a shame that kids, or horses, can’t walk the streets at night without getting shot. And it isn’t the fault of the people who live on Hope street. It is the fault of the cops and the people who live on other streets. That was my point and you should be supporting it because it is exactly what you want to happen on your 30 blocks.

Oh don’t I. I did that drive you whine about every day all summer long for years. I did it on a crappy little motorcycle while you sit in your obviously fabulous car and while you are going into the center of the city, I was going to the old Acme Bakery in Overbrook. Not exactly the safest of neighborhoods. I have been through Philly more times than I care to count and I lived there for 12 years. Not out in the countryside like you, but in Huntingdon Valley right on the boarder with NE Philly. Again, not the garden spot of the word. So yeah, now I live in SoCal and you are stuck with bad roads and 30 blocks, but that’s not my point.
My point is that the people who live on Hope Street have done all that they can to clean up their little corner of the hell that you hate so much. They bought into a hell hole and then they bought paint, and windows, and air conditioners to make it livable. They didn’t run because they couldn’t afford to run. Sure there is crime all around them. Sure there are gang bangers all around them. Sure it sucks. But you don’t see any boarded up houses and you don’t see any burned out hulks.
Give them some credit for christ’s sake. It isn’t easy living in a shit hole, but somebody has to make it better and while you are doing nothing but bitching about it, they are investing their money and their sweat to make it a better place. I hope that they succeed.
