The former third most powerful Vatican official and Australia’s most senior Catholic official, Cardinal George Pell, has been found guilty of child sexual abuse in a Melbourne trial.
The verdict was delivered on December 11 but subject to a suppression order until now, while a previous trial on the same five charges resulted in a hung jury – leading to a retrial.
Pell, the Vatican’s Treasurer, was found guilty of sexually penetrating a child under the age of 16, along with four charges of an indecent act with a child under the age of 16, according to The Guardian. Pell is accused of orally raping two choir boys he caught drinking sacramental wine in a church corridor.
The case against Pell centred around events of more than 22 years ago.
The jury found that in the second half of December 1996, while he was archbishop of Melbourne, Pell walked in on two 13-year-old choirboys after a Sunday solemn mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral and sexually assaulted them.

After leaving the procession, the complainant said, he and the other boy snuck back into the church corridors and entered the priest’s sacristy, a place they knew they should not be. There they found some sacramental wine and began to drink. The complainant alleged that Pell had walked in on them and told them something to the effect of they were in trouble.
Pell manoeuvred his robes to expose his penis. He stepped forward, grabbed the other boy by the back of his head, and forced the boy’s head on to his penis, the complainant told the court. –The Guardian
In another incident, Pell’s accuser said that later in 1996 or 1997 Pell attacked him again while he was walking down the hallway to a choristers’ change room.
Pell pleaded not guilty to the charges, calling them “a load of garbage and falsehood” in a recorded interview from October 2016.
His sentence will be handed down on Wednesday, as Pell has been out on bail since the verdict and is currently recovering from knee surgery.
Pope Francis, who has previously praised Pell for his honesty and response to child sexual abuse, has yet to publicly react, but just two days after the unreported verdict in December the Vatican announced that Pell and two other cardinals had been removed from the pontiff’s council of advisers.
Pell’s conviction and likely imprisonment will cause shockwaves through a global Catholic congregation and is a blow to Francis’s efforts to get a grip on sexual abuse. –The Guardian
Word of Pell’s conviction comes days after a Vatican summit on sexual abuse during which Germany’s top cardinal, Reinhard Marx, admitted while talking about thet Catholic church’s decades of sexual misconduct; “The files that documented these horrible acts and could name those responsible were destroyed or not created at all.”
Before Pell returned to Australia to face charges he had been working for three years as prefect of the secretariat for the economy of the Holy See, “making him one of the most senior Catholics in the world,” according to the Guardian. Pell was considered one of Pope Francis’s most trusted advisers – handpicked to oversee the Vatican’s finances and root out corruption.
Pell stood silent and emotionless as the verdict was read following the trial which lasted for more than a month. His defense attorney, Robert Richter QC, said that he would “absolutely” appeal the decision.

Ann has been reporting on the corruption in the church for a long time. My problem with her is that she doesn’t see that it’s Roman Catholicism that is the root of the problem. How can you have a hierarchy that big and rich and not be corrupt. Anytime corruption is exposed we find out that there has been a cover up that goes straight to the Vatican.

I too was an altar boy, and had a few touches of the church vino, back in the day. It was too sweet for me, I much prefer the dry reds. Also, it was my understanding that it didn’t actually become holy until elevated in the chalice during mass.
I also was never molested, or ever heard about any of the others having been, and there was quite a pack of us, lots of Irish and assorted white mutts. This was small-town Midwestern area, we went to a public school, where they called us Mackerel Snappers.
Grandpa grew grapes, made vino in immigrant town in MA. Every Sat., around 4, many of the priests would come over to check out that week’s progress down in the basement. The Portagee priest, the German priest, the Irish priest-all were welcome and most came. Usually lasted 3-4 hours, then all the old boys would stagger back to the rectory. I doubt any of the neighborhood boys got molested, as their old-school parents would not have put up with it.

No, my donations are going elsewhere. My church (in the archdiocese of Newark, formerly led by McCarick) is there for sacraments only, for the time being. Our weekly collections have dipped, spiked back up over the Christmas season, and have plunged the past few weeks, down about 30% from a year ago, pre McCarick.

How does one disprove an allegation, especially one that is decades old, and cannot be proven or disproven?
This is the quandary that plagues the Catholic Church and society at-large.
That being said, the instances of pedophilia, pederasty, and homosexual behavior between priests and their young parishioners is an abomination and must be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.
However, the following questions must be asked…
–How prevalent is homosexuality, pederasty and pedophilia in the Catholic clergy?
–How many of these claims are false?
–Why did it take years and even decades for those claiming to be abused to come forward?
–Is it possible that there are false claims of abuse by those who are looking for “quick cash”?
–How many people are making false claims, just because they were parishioners at the time the alleged “abuse” took place?
–Why did some of the “victims” wait until some of the accused priests had died before filing their claims?
This “witch hunt” aimed at the Catholic Church is no different than previous “witch hunts” in which innocent people were prosecuted upon the claims of those who were not only vindictive, but had an agenda of their own.
One good example of this is the “McMartin pre-school” abuse case (in which no abuse was ever proven), the claims of the children (who were coached by vindictive “child protective services workers”), that were so outlandish and preposterous that they could not possibly occurred at the time and places that were claimed. The accused were prosecuted despite no evidence being presented.
Another example is that of the Wenatchee Washington day-care workers who were targeted by a rogue police detective for the same actions. No proof of abuse was ever found.
In both cases, innocent people were found “guilty” and endured long harsh prison sentences, until the TRUTH finally came out—that no abuse took place. Still, their lives were ruined.
It has been said that the Catholic Church would have to endure many trials from evil. The present-day homosexual pedophilia clergy scandal is but one of them.
It is likely that external forces that have harbored a visceral hatred of the Catholic Church are behind much of the hysteria that plagues the Catholic Church. It would not surprise me if jewish interests were behind the “feeding frenzy”. The hatred that jews have for Christianity knows no bounds.
As an aside, on a numerical basis, abuse by clergy is more prevalent in jewish and Protestant denominations than that in the Catholic Church. The “feeding frenzy” that the “mainstream media” is guilty of shows that they have an agenda of their own…anti-Catholicism has always been a part of the American social fabric…
