Diocletian in Venezuela

Guest Post by Jeff Thomas

History has an extraordinary tendency to repeat itself time and again.

The same mistakes that rulers make in one era are repeated in subsequent eras. Political leaders have a nagging habit to want to grow governments to unmanageable proportions, invading other sovereign nations, whilst increasingly dominating the electorate at home.

Invariably, this proves extremely costly and the bill is always passed to the people, first in the form of taxation and, ultimately, in the form of confiscation. Eventually nations and empires collapse under the great weight of their own governments.

And, time after time, the same patterns are followed, particularly during the declining stages. Declining nations follow similar patterns with uncanny regularity.

Let’s have a look at just three – first, Rome – an ancient empire that collapsed, then Venezuela – a country that’s currently collapsing, then the US – a country that’s well along in the process, but is just now entering the final stages prior to collapse.

Rome

1. Began as a republic after overthrowing a monarchy

2. For a considerable time, prosperity existed, as the economy was based upon sound money – gold & silver

3. Government grew in size and cost and, increasingly, dominated and controlled the economy

4. Excessive spending by government, on warfare and welfare, led to massive deficits

5. Taxes were repeatedly increased in order to pay for the deficits

6. When taxation had reached a saturation point, the currency was debased, in order to continue the transfer of wealth to the government

Then, under Diocletian:

7. Greatly expanded emoluments to the homeless and unemployed, causing far greater deficits, creating significant inflation

8. Rather than correct the problem by cutting expenditures, price controls were instituted, dictating fixed prices on goods and services

9. Unable to raise prices to counter inflation, producers of goods and services ceased providing them

10. Hyperinflation kicked in, destroying the economy.

11. The productive people of Rome simply gave up and began to leave.

It’s interesting to note how major a role the elimination of real money had on the collapse. The various stages of denigration of money led to the fall of the empire.

And, this was not an isolated incident. The same series of events has been seen repeatedly in history. Government becomes obsessive in its own growth and expects the people to pay for their adventures in warfare and self-aggrandizement.

The natives become restless, so Bread & Circuses are introduced – a welfare state to placate the proletariat. This becomes unsustainable, so excessive taxation, monetary debasement, expanded warfare and, finally, price controls are undertaken.

Then, the inevitable collapse occurs.

And it’s just as true today. The same pattern continues. Re-read the above eleven points, but substitute “Venezuela” for “Rome.” And substitute “Maduro” for “Diocletian.”

Venezuela today is a dead ringer for Rome in every way.

But, of course, Venezuela is a third-world country and, whilst we may sympathise, we can sit back and say, “I’m glad it’s not me that’s caught up in such a hopeless situation.”

But what if we were to read the above list once again, replacing “United States” for “Rome?”

Well, in fact, we have another match, on all events. However, the US hasn’t reached the point at which the new emperor, Diocletian takes power. If the pattern continues in the US as it has played out repeatedly in history, we can say that the US is primed for its own Diocletian and the balance of the above list is in store for the US.

But is that likely? Well, let’s have a look.

7. Greatly expanded emoluments to the homeless and unemployed, causing far greater deficits, creating significant inflation

The US stock and bond markets are now in a bubble of historic proportions and the present bull market is the longest in history. A crash would appear to be unavoidable. If that were to happen prior to November, 2020, it’s relatively certain that the US would vote in a new president who would offer promises to bail out the suffering masses. And, yes, this would unquestionably create massive debt, deficits and inflation.

8. Rather than correct the problem by cutting expenditures, price controls were instituted, dictating fixed prices on goods and services

As inflation is a certainty after a crash, so the public’s inability to pay the ever-increasing prices will be a certainty. And, like Diocletian, the new president would seek to place limitations on price increases in order to remain popular.

9. Unable to raise prices to counter inflation, producers of goods and services simply ceased providing them.

In Venezuela, as in Rome, production costs rose, but Maduro placed a ceiling on prices that manufacturers could charge, assuring that even essentials like toilet paper became more costly to make than they could legally be sold for.

Consequently, factories simply shut down. Many goods and services ceased to be available, just as they had under Diocletian.

10. Hyperinflation kicked in, destroying the economy.

Once the above conditions have taken place, hyperinflation is almost a given. No country ever wants hyperinflation, yet governments have, throughout history, inadvertently created it through the same missteps above. (In the last century alone, there have been more than twenty hyperinflations in the world.)

11. The productive people of Rome simply gave up and began to leave.

As unlikely as it seemed at the time, manufacturers, shop owners, tradesmen and other productive people left Rome. Most went north, to live amongst the barbarians. Their new life was more basic, but at least it was possible to do a day’s work and make money, without the destructive interference of an all-powerful government.

Similarly, in Venezuela today, thousands are heading for the borders on all sides and exiting a dying economy. And, again, it’s the more productive people who are the most inclined to exit. They seek an opportunity to live and work in a country where they can actually provide for their families.

If this last event were to take place in the US, the country would face the dual problem of having the productive people create an exodus out of the country, in the midst of a government-created exodus into the country by non-productive illegals.

When hearing the name Diocletian I usually think of Purcell’s masterpiece or the famous ruins of the emperor’s baths in Rome.

Rather effective historical linking here. Venezuela is no Rome however. Just what should be a very rich province of Empire. The leaders of Venezuela couldn’t work their way out of a paper bag apparently. At least now-deceased renegades Saddam Hussein and Col. Khaddafi had functioning modern societies built on rich oil reserves but they weren’t strict socialists. Just pragmatic strongmen; not doctrinaire in the slightest.

But they pissed off the wrong people – the Evil Fuckers and their bankers.

Now the U.S.A. is a whole different story and mirrors the great Roman Empire in many, many ways. The American leaders on the other hand do not have any thought much beyond the next election and, as Mr Thomas rightly points out, will do what ever is required to mollify and entertain the Lumpen. America currently can afford, on the big credit card, and largesse of their creditors, legions and navies in garrison and abroad throughout the Empire as well as a huge native Free-Shit Army.

Contemporary enemies, in the mold of famous Brennus , Alaric and Odoacer, are patiently waiting in the wings, chomping on the bit, ready to give the Imperial City a real treatment.

And The Evil Fuckers role in the Empire? They do not give a God damned about the U.S.A. in any case. Just the muscle to get their dirty work done.

It will be a while longer methinks yet the Empire corrodes as we watch.

Worthless money has cursed mankind for centuries but we never learn anything from history. Or we learn but just don’t care. The wealthy elites will come out on top as always. They will buy even more of the country at rock bottom prices. One way or another these treasonous bastards in Washington DC are going to ” kill” America as they have been ordered to do and they will probably get away with it without one shot being fired. I don’t think white people have the will to fight and most Vietnam Veterans who have real combat experience are getting to old . Maybe some of of National guard units will make a decision to fight . Seems hopeless. Maybe it’s God’s will for America as a nation to be wiped out . To be sent to the dust bowl of history .
I just hope I make it to the Appalachian mountains before the shit hits the fan. What ever you do or go Don’t come to Charlotte NC as it lost to diversity and diversity is where cities and nations DIE.

Most likely option:do nothing. BTW where are these highly skilled and productive people going to people going to go when the SHTF? It’s not like there are a lot of countries such as the USSA that welcomes and cares for everyone, legal or illegal.

Bb, oh we learned and became experts. THERe is tremendous wealth for an elite few to be made whilst burning a country down and destroying it. They will be paid handsomely by the buyers of the land. They are literally selling their populace into slavery. Nobody realizes they are the slaves because of the distractive bread and circuses however….thus the repetivness of this over history….

The US has made it difficult to leave. And intentionally so. US citizens are taxed on their world-wide income, and even on their unrealized income in many cases. And they force other nations to trace and monitor US citizens broad. US citizens are tax slaves, and it is no hyperbole to say so.

If you’re waiting for the US to collapse, you’ll be waiting a loooong time.

The US has been in the middle of a decline, slow motion collapse, for a long time now. It just isn’t obvious to the average person. At some point, who knows when, it will be blatantly obvious.

Just look at where your computer and phone are made. It isn’t the US.

Excellent and salient observations.
Also include clothing, shoes, light bulbs and lamp oil, washers, tires and most everything other than cinder blocks.

P – those things you mention are all available US made. All of them. People prefer cheap. If you do not even know to look, then you are surely buying foreign goods when you could buy US made.

Whose fault is it then that things are not made in the US? Why, it is people such as you who buy foreign made. And then you whine about nothing being made in the US. Unbelievable.

No phones US made anymore. Computers yes, phones no.

Not whining and do not sound your haughty accusatory tone at me. Neither proper or polite in this context. Just observing what is being served up locally from the big box stores to the remaining Main Street emporia.

I buy U.S.A.-made when practicable and not when exorbitantly more expensive.

But just to be sure where stuff that is sold in America is made, check the balance of trade figures for your own edification:

Nothing wrong other than the sin of omission. Diocletian had little choice but to inflate the currency as he had an army to pay, the army that stood between Rome and the unrelenting barbarian incursions. Although there is a lot to learn from Rome, its republic, empire, and fall; we can’t neglect the why and probability that these extreme though flawed measures, kept the empire chugging along another 100 years. The U.S. practices profligacy at all levels and the empire is costing us way more to uphold than it is giving back to the country and in particular our productive class. The elites are doing just fine, they are teaching their kids Mandarin. Not having those avenues, much like Jeff pointed out, members of the productive class are just dropping out. In that respect, Diocletian’s reign is most instructive.

Once Mexicans all invade the US and drastically change our demographics the productive US citizens will emigrate to mexico and make it into the next worlds most powerful country. And it will then be a white haven and be called racist and immigration from the UsA will happen and a new wall shall be fought over to keep the brown people from the USA from invading white Mexico. Funny success and power seems to follow the less pigmented populace…..
