Tough Housing Market Forces More Millennials To Live In Van Down By The River

Via The Babylon Bee

U.S.—A tough, high-priced, and brutally competitive housing market is forcing more and more millennials to live in a van down by the river.

Many 20-30 somethings are also having to live on a steady diet of government cheese, sources confirmed. They also do a lot of doobie-rolling.

“I went out and thought I could be a writer or something,” said Aiden Farley, 28. “But it was pretty clear to me that when homes are going for $750,000 or more in my area, I’ll be living in a van down by the river for the foreseeable future.”

“There’s pretty much no hope,” said one expert, Christopher Spade. “You can go out and try to get the world by the tail and put it in your pocket.”

“But yeah, you’re probably gonna end up living in a van down by the river.”

Boomers say the housing market is not a problem, pointing out that if they could buy a new home for a nickel in the 1960s, their grandchildren should have no problem scraping up nearly a million dollars for a fixer-upper.

Nonetheless, some people suggest going ahead and getting a “motivational speaker or something” to help you go and conquer the world and maybe afford a small condo before you get too old. But they say you’ll still end up in a van down by the river, most likely.

I’ve never bought a house yet. the prices and monthly payment are too much. I hear youngsters at work talk about this stuff. They see a bleak future and this is one of the things that bring them down.
I figure that building a small cabin will be my only way of having my own place. That’s paid for.

There is a TV show called “Building off the Grid” that has some very interesting homes that are being built for a small amount of money. Some of my favorites are the homes built using used shipping containers. With the slowdown in Chinese imports, there should be an over-supply of containers on the market.

Move to a small town in Canada where you can buy a house for $CDN30,000-50,000…or better still build your own for a fraction of that. And there are lots of jobs in places like the Maritimes because no one wants to work when government handouts are way to generous. Just get out of the concrete jungles and stop being a slave.

I have seen quite a few video essays showing lots of people who are living in vans/campers in some of the most scenic parts of the country. Some of these places require them to move every 24 hours, so they go to a fast food joint for a few hours and then back to their coastal view.

Boomers buying houses in the ‘60’s for a nickel. Apparently the definition of “boomer” to these Babylon Bee idiots is anyone over the age of 40. The oldest of boomers were born in 1946. Almost none of them bought a house even by late 1969. Add a decade.

Yes indeed. A quite insulting comment in an otherwise humorous piece. And they were NEVER a nickel.

And most ‘millennials’ are the children, not grandchildren, of the ‘boomers.’

Well, by golly, my retirement plan IS a van down by the river. I’m looking for used dodge econolines with less than 200k miles, preferably owned by a non-smoking granny who only used it to run a side line biz off the interstate rest areas.

“side line biz off the interstate rest areas?” Sounds like you better get it steam cleaned and sanitized before you take residence.

Wait for prices to crater 50-70% and then buy. Not before. The easiest way to cause yourself to become poor is to buy real estate at the top of an overinflated bubble market.
