5 foods to stop eating right now to reduce high blood pressure and risk of heart failure

Via Marketwatch

You are what you don’t eat.

A diet that helps people reduce high blood pressure or hypertension may also reduce the risk of heart failure in people under the age of 75, according to research published in the June 2019 edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and led by doctors at Wake Forest School of Medicine, which is part of Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, N.C.

‘Only a few prior studies have examined the effects of the Dash diet on the incidence of heart failure, and they have yielded conflicting results.’

—Claudia Campos, Wake Forest School of Medicine

An observational study of more than 4,500 people over 13 years showed that those individuals under 75 who most closely adhered to the Dash diet had a significantly lower risk of developing heart failure than those who were least likely to keep to the tenets of the diet. (Dash is an acronym for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension.)

“Only a few prior studies have examined the effects of the Dash diet on the incidence of heart failure, and they have yielded conflicting results,” said Claudia Campos, associate professor of general internal medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine. “Following the Dash diet can reduce the risk of developing heart failure by almost half.”

The study recommends cutting five things out of your diet: This Dash diet recommends fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, poultry, fish and low-fat dairy products, while reducing these three main components: salt, red meat, sweets and sugar-sweetened beverages. It is very similar to the Mediterranean diet, but the Dash diet recommends cutting out two more things: full cream (in favor of low-fat dairy products) and alcoholic beverages.

There are other ways to eat healthier too. People who eat slowly are less likely to become obese or develop metabolic syndrome, a cluster of heart disease, diabetes and stroke risk factors, according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2017. They may be more conscious of what they are eating and drinking, and are less prone to overeating.

The Dash diet is very similar to the Mediterranean diet but, unlike that diet, it recommends low-fat dairy products and excluding alcoholic beverages.

Dietitians also advise against snacking and takeouts. People have less control over what goes into their meals when they order in. Americans get most of their daily sodium — more than 75% — from processed food and restaurant food, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People eat an average of 200 calories more per meal when they eat food from restaurants..

“Excess sodium can increase your blood pressure and your risk for a heart disease and stroke,” the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. “Together, heart disease and stroke kill more Americans each year than any other cause.” Americans get 71% of their daily sodium from processed and restaurant food. Cooking for yourself is the safest and healthiest option.

Artificially sweetened beverages may be linked to an increased risk of stroke and dementia, according to the American Heart Association’s peer-reviewed journal Stroke. Another 2015 study found that older women who consume two or more diet sodas per day are 30% more likely to suffer a cardiovascular event. Add that to more research suggesting regular soda is linked to obesity.

Crush it first then put on a warm water tea. Let sit for 15 minutes after crushing to release the allicin, which is the anti bacterial/viral component. Just swallow what you can, anything is better than nothing. I like doing it in bone broth or herbal tea.

Get you some 5% Lugol’s solution from J Crow’s, elderberry syrup (preferably without sugar), and colloidal silver solution.

Lugol’s solution is a form of Iodine solution that can be taken internally. I take one drop twice a week just to maintain Iodine levels in my thyroid gland, but as the Iodine circulates around in the blood system, it apparently kills bacteria and viruses. When I am feeling sick, I take 2 drops instead of one and feel better very shortly.

Elderberry syrup will keep you from getting colds & flu and is helpful in shortening the duration of an illness. Dunno why.

Silver kills bad bacteria but apparently has no effect on good bacteria.

Also good to avoid foods containing sugar. Bacteria and fungi love sugar.

We are an elderberry farm. This stuff was stronger than the elderberries. I have to be careful with iodine because I have thyroid issues. My naturopath has never recommended I take it so I would avoid it.

Be careful what medical advice you offer online. But thanks for taking time to make suggestions.

My great aunt’s recipe:

First, remove the guts, skin and head.
Second, boil the carcass, for two or three hours to remove the excess fat from the meat.
Lastly, stuff like a turkey, place on a baking pan surrounded with yams, and bake for about an hour.

According to her, the result is quite tasty. Haven’t been that hungry yet. But who knows what will transpire as we move deeper into the Grand Solar Minimum. Hunger may overcome squeamishness.

Getting a fresh possum is tough if you don’t know how to hunt them .

So if you want fresh possum this an easy way to fill the cooler.

1) Pick out a road where you’ve seen dead possums on a regular basis .
2) Drive down the road at dusk…every time you see a dead possum stop and spray paint a circle around it.
3) Drive down the road at least 25 miles. You need to cover a lot of ground.
4) Sit and wait about two hours…a good book or your kindle will keep you occupied .
5) Drive back down the same highway, every possum on the side of the road without a
circle around it is fresh.
6) Clean the little boogers like you’d clean a rabbit….save the pelt…they make fine gloves and hats.
7) Cook’em up with taters,carrots and celery.
8) Enjoy !

One of my boys brought home the greater part of a New Holland sixer of Dragon’s Milk bourbon barrel aged stout. I usually favor Founders Porter, or Yards Brewing’s General Washington’s Porter. This NH Dragon’s Milk is good stuff, 11% ABV foot warmer at the end of a chilly day.
Still finishing a case of Sam’s Cream Stout but hey, I’m not picky.

The ONLY thing you need to stop eating is ANYTHING from the Agra-Industrial Complex. If you don’t know where your food comes from, the very source and every step in between, you put yourself at risk.

There is nothing inherently wrong with with “red meat” as long as it is grass fed. “Red meat” animals are ruminants. Feeding them grain products (or sugars/cellulose/bone meal) creates a world of problems from the absorption of pesticides and herbicides to the kinds of fats that may clog arteries.

Neither is there any problem with, and in fact it has been shown to be beneficial to drink moderate amounts of alcohol. Ditto organic, grass-fed dairy as well as sea salt..

If these people are such geniuses, how did the obesity epidemic reach the proportions we’ve seen in the past two or three decades? They have been wrong about so much for so long it’s ridiculous to listen to anything they have to say.

YMMV

I’m reading a book now called Eat Rich and Live Long. I’ve known about the low carb, high fat diet for years and have been following it on and off. This book explains exactly why it works and why it lowers coronary heart disease and diabetes, and goes into detail how this low fat nonsense started.

We were duped and lied to decades ago by a man named Ancel Keys. He was originally responsible for pushing the low fat diet and food pyramid. He fitted his “research” to show that a diet high in natural fats caused heart disease. He was spectacularly wrong. Heart disease and diabetes rates exploded in the country from the government and doctors pushing his eating more carbs/less fat propaganda. And doctors are still pushing this high fat diet causes heart disease crap. All the new studies and research completely disavow Keys.

Aside from the massive environmental damage done with killing of 100s of millions of animals(e.g. 1100 gallons of water to bring 1 lb of cello wrapped beef to your face or the massive land area required for waste evaporation not to mention the numerous illnesses of those unfortunate enough to be downwind) every year as well as the ethics of raising/slaughtering these sentient creatures, the ingestion of animal fats immediately has an adverse effect on the endothelium lining in your CV system.

I too for many years tried to dance around the above points by eating only grass finished beef and/or the meat I killed, gutted & skinned myself. But facts is facts and every study I’ve ever read as well as read about, flatly states that eating a whole food, plant based diet results in a healthier & longer life.

I’ve also found there is no sense debating this with people on the other side and I know you love your meat so I’ll just leave it at that.

Every body is different.
TBP demographic majority are folks old enough who probably already know
what works & what causes problems as individuals.

It’s the challenges of discipline, resisting cravings and temptations, plus choosing smarter.
Can be difficult at restaurants, or as a dinner guest. Choose wisely, grasshopper.

What’s worked for me might not work for you, and vice versa, right?

Golden rule: Anything in moderation; Nothing to extreme. Smart portion sizes.

-Almond milk instead of dairy has dramatically reduced mucous and phlegm levels.
A good flavored cheese in moderation is too delicious to avoid at times.
Kraft Singles are not cheese. They are rubbery squares of something I wouldn’t give to even a dog.

-Butter is one of my weaknesses, but it’s better than margarine, certainly.
Butter on spuds and veggies is tough to resist, but a light EVOO, with garlic pepper and smart salt
is a healthier substitute. Sour cream consumption kept to a minimum, if eaten at all.

-A glass of red wine early in the dinner hour. Rarely drink beer or soda w/ meals. Water often.

-Baked or broiled fish more often; less sausage, fatty red meat, lamb, or pork entrees.
But, love me a good char grilled steak, or chops from time to time.
Deep fried foods as seldom as possible, but man, some of them sure do taste good occasionally.

-Steamed veggie sides, vs. traditional meat and potatoes every meal.
But, also love me a good spud variety, and mashed, boiled, or baked are just delish,
when paired with many proteins.

-Being hitched to an Asian, I consume white rice often. But, Asians all seem to live longer, so…?
The cruciferous veggies pack the most punch. Cauli, broc, spinach, green beans, brussel sprouts.
Baked brussels, halved, drizzled with EVOO, and seasoned with garlic pepper and or parmesian cheese?
Delectable.
Also love me some ‘shrooms, blended in w/ veggies, or sauteed and served by themselves, or in soups.
I pity anyone who doesn’t like onions. They enhance so many foods. Vidalia’s are to die for.

McCormick makes a California blend of garlic pepper I use on many foods as a seasoning.

-Fruit before meals; not after, on top of proteins, carbs and veggies. Why?
Read somewhere that if eaten after a meal, fruit digestion is delayed, and ferments while the digestive tract processes the proteins, carbs and veggies first.

Good bread. One of life’s staples.
For me, that’s hard crusted, like French baguettes, or Italian white w/ sesame seeds,
or a multi grain. Light & fluffy, not dense. Spread with some baked garlic clove paste? Heaven.
But, too many grains seems to cause gut problems for me personally.

Salt improves flavor, which is a priority consideration for most folks.
Healthy food does the body well, but if it’s bland or doesn’t taste enjoyable…meh.
Himalayan or a good sea salt contains minerals that are just as important as vitamins.
Watch the BP, though, and test it often, eh?

For lunches, brown bagging it works for me. It costs less, it’s usually tastier and healthier.
My weakness here is cured lunch meats, like smoked ham, corned beef; smoked turkey.
Too much is supposedly not good, so tuna fish sammies are good alternates.
Ditto, for egg salad and chicken salad sammiches.

Sweets and snacks like chips, pretzels, crackers and cookies are tasty, but I need to cut down.
Best cracker on the planet, in my humble opinion:
CrunchMaster 5 Grain Original flavor.
Good Lord. With a good aged cheddar and some grapes, and a glass of Cabernet, I’m in.
Pass the platter.

That’s all for now. I’m getting hungry, and it’s still early in the morning.
