China Wants Activists to Stay Out of Its War on Pollution
In 2014 Premier Li Keqiang declared a “war against pollution” and some concerned citizens from Wuhan decided to travel to Bejing to discuss the issue.
“We were worried and angry when we realized what was causing the stench and making our kids sick,” said Zhang Xijiao, 44, who was detained for a week for making the banner. “But we are like ants, the local government can crush us as they please.”
The fact the issue is championed by the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao makes it all the more delicate, prompting local officials to try and silence activists who could expose environmental degradation happening under their watch.
Indeed, the eight green activists interviewed for this article said that it’s becoming increasingly common for non-governmental organizations, both domestic and foreign, to avoid sensitive topics altogether and to practice self-censorship so that they can keep operating in China. Most asked not to be named to avoid attracting official attention.

As the campaigning residents of Wuhan found to their cost, pushing back against the authorities is a serious matter. More recently they switched tactics to try and draw the central government’s attention to their plight. But according to Zhang, Wuhan officials have blocked their attempts to reach Beijing, monitoring when they book tickets to travel to the capital.

A new “recycling” program was started in Shanghai in July 2019, with plans to expand throughout China in 2020. There is great confusion regarding the complex four-tier, color-coded garbage sorting system, which requires additional sorting prior to recycling.
Until then? Landfill or incineration remain the only options.
China’s 1.4 billion people produce growing mountains of trash that urgently need to be dealt with. According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, the volume of treated domestic garbage in urban areas reached 215 million tons in 2017. State media often cite a figure from the Urban Environment and Sanitation Association of nearly 1 billion tons of waste each year.
And, proving that making progress against a problem depends upon how you look at it, you can see that China’s war against pollution has yielded results. Their concentration of some pollutants is the lowest in over a decade!

Those with environmental concerns usually submit concerns to the Ministry of Environment and Ecology rather than confronting the government directly.
“The environmental area is where Chinese society has the biggest consensus,” said the institute’s founder, Ma Jun. “The most important work for NGOs is probably to find out where is the boundary, and how to make a substantial push within limited space.” Greenpeace, the biggest international environmental NGO operating in China, ditches its signature model of organizing non-violent protests and instead cooperates with the government through different channels including providing policy feedback. The organization is still waiting for official registration in China years after applying.

Protests regarding the proposed incinerator in Yangluo suburb of Wuhan, caused the construction of the plant to be suspended, with adjoining fields becoming landfill.
According to media reports, police clashed with local residents who demonstrated for several nights. The plant was later suspended by the local government.

China’s environment ministry and the provincial government of Hubei—where Wuhan is located—did not respond to faxes seeking comment. Wuhan Environment Investment & Development Co. Ltd, which invested in the proposed incinerator in Yangluo, also did not respond to a fax asking if the project would go ahead.
One resident of a nearby village said there had been no public consultation or official announcement regarding the project. A grandfather who asked not to be named for fear of retribution, he said he opposed the plant because it would affect future generations.

Most of us cannot imagine living in an environment such as theirs, where the government’s newest “Policy” announces its arrival at our door with a detention box and a team of emergency relocation workers.
Poor management planning. Work on a solution only after the problem appears, even if predicted.
Not the hospital. That showed definite “management planning” well in advance of the need.
I think that entire cleared area is suspect. Really? And, by the way? Take a look at the size of that landfill which was photographed in December from the air?
That’s one huge landfill.

I was following links provided in some of Celeste’s blog you provided (thanks) and came upon a weird series of images, unrelated, but this one made me laugh.
When my son was in kindergarten, I was homeroom Mom, of course. Okay, still am. So, the teacher proposed a “hugs” contest with all the kids bringing in a list of people they hugged to teach them about Love and Kindness for Valentine’s Day.
Well, if you don’t realize it, I have a seriously annoying competitive streak.
We won the contest, of course, but I was accused of taking my kid to Walmart and making him hug complete strangers.
I did NOT do that. I took him to that huge Pentecost Church on Douglas Blvd when the service let out and put a sandwich sign on him that said “Brother/Sister, can you spare a HUG?”
So, there WERE strangers, but they were HOLY ROLLER strangers.
We had hundreds of hugs. Pshaw! The next huggable kid only had a couple dozen, tops.
Now, you see why my son has issues with me.
That is funny…
I had to get the wife to change the password, when I was on here a few hours ago, I got hit again…and she had to go into it for something called a one drive……

I think this article was written with special care to not suggest there is anything out of the ordinary about a group of concerned citizens from Wuhan traveling to Bejing to discuss concerns over pollution from incinerators and trash landfill stench issues.
It is also not out of the ordinary that the group was met at the train station and taken back to Wuhan in private car.
I think China has big probrem requiring new poricy.
