A friend of mine from aircraft mechanic’s school worked for American at LAX for a few years. DC-10s would develop a crack above the cabin door just behind the cockpit. No repair was necessary until the crack got to be a certain length but it was thought to be disconcerting to the passengers who might look up and see it as they boarded the plane.
The fix was to Bondo the crack and paint it (repeatedly) until it reached the length that required an FAA authorized repair.
