Ivermectin: Oklahoma doctor warns against using unproven Covid drug
A US doctor is urging people to stop taking the horse deworming drug Ivermectin to treat Covid-19.
Patients have been needing urgent treatment at emergency units in Oklahoma hospitals after overdosing on the drug, Dr Jason McElyea says.
Small doses of Ivermectin are approved for use on humans, but not for Covid.
“You’ve got to have a prescription for this medication for a reason – because it can be dangerous,” Dr McElyea told the BBC.
He said a “handful” of people overdosing on the drug were putting further strain on hospital staff already stretched by a surge in Covid cases.
“The [emergency rooms] are so backed up that gunshot victims were having hard times getting to facilities where they can get definitive care and be treated,” he told local broadcaster KFOR earlier this week.
Ivermectin, mainly a veterinary deworming agent, can be used in small doses to treat some human conditions.
But the drug has become controversial after being promoted as a way of treating or preventing Covid, despite being so far unproven.
Its use has become so common in the US that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement last month urging people not to take it.
“You are not a horse. You are not a cow,” the FDA said, warning that taking large doses of the substance “is dangerous and can cause serious harm”.
This week, the influential podcast host Joe Rogan, who has dismissed vaccines, said he was taking Ivermectin after testing positive for Covid-19.
Dr McElyea said patients who had taken the drug were arriving at hospital with vomiting, muscle aches, and even vision loss.
“Some people taking inappropriate doses have actually put themselves in worse conditions than if they’d caught Covid,” he told KFOR.
“You have to ask yourself, ‘If I take this medicine, what am I going to do if something bad happens?’ What’s your next step, what’s your back-up plan? If you’re going to take a medicine that could affect your health, do it with a doctor on board.”

That is EXACTLY the right way to approach this.
Dr. Harvey Risch from Yale said a while back that Hydroxychloroquine was being attacked even more than Ivermectin, which should be taken as evidence that it is probably more effective than Ivermectin.
The only reason that people aren’t taking more Hydroxychloroquine is that it is not available over the counter in any formulation (including veterinary).
They generally maintain even keel through ‘iatrogenic medicine’.

We haven’t even begun to see much of it. I agree. Healthcare will be in freefall this winter, and it is not because of Covid, but because of a mass exodus of healthcare workers. Some will walk out because they will not get vaccinated, and the other ones will be MIA because of the ill effects of the vaccine during flu season. I am sorry for anyone who needs emergency care, an operation or who is chronically ill. It will be difficult to access appropriate care soon.

If you use human specifications, no problem will occur.
If you use the animal version and follow the dosing guidelines no problem will occur either. I know from personal experience.
Would think you would use it in a very small dose starting out, just to be on the safe side and not take way to much in case of an adverse reaction. Like 5 or 10% adjusted for a humans weight vs an animals weight. But that’s just me, with 2 brain cells to rub together.

Where I work Ivermectin is frequenly prescribed for human use , particlarly among Aboriginals for all sorts of infestations. I didn’t know it had vetinary applications until much later. It’s just something that was fairly routinely prescribed. Vancomycin is used in animal care, so should we throw that out as well?

Actually he was misquoted. It was a hit piece by the news producers. Listen again. First to exactly what he says and then listen to the crap that the news announcer throws in.
The piece starts with the doctor saying that you should see a doctor to get a prescription for the stuff. The news announcer makes up a lot of BS and then the doctor says the ERs are backed up. He doesn’t actually say from Ivermectin. The ERs and ambulances are busy with COVID cases.
It was good medical advice. It’s dangerous to take it without a prescription and be aware that if you don’t know the correct dosage there could be problems.
