Fixing sleeping habits can drastically decrease calorie intake, a new study has shown

Scientists divulge easy way to lose weight

Sleeping more can help people to consume less calories per day and to lose weight, if those healthy sleeping habits are maintained over a prolonged period of time, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Chicago, Illinois. The findings were published on Monday in peer-reviewed journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

The clinical research involved 80 adults aged between 21 and 40. All the participants qualified as overweight with a body mass index ranging from 25 to 29.9, while ‘normal’ body weight falls into the range between 18.5 and 24.9. All the participants also had habitual sleep of 6.5 hours per night or less. The research was conducted for a prolonged period of time, running from November 2014 to October 2020.

The participants were observed for a two-week period to establish a baseline and were then randomly separated in two groups. The control group continued with their sleeping habits without any intervention, while another group received “an individualized sleep hygiene counseling session,” aimed at prolonging their bedtime to some 8.5 hours.

No further support beyond the counseling was provided to the participants, who continued to sleep in their own beds, though they wore tracking devices to register the duration of their sleeping time.

“Most other studies on this topic in labs are short-lived, for a couple of days, and food intake is measured by how much participants consume from an offered diet,” lead researcher Dr Esra Tasali at the University of Chicago’s Sleep Center stated. “In our study we only manipulated sleep and had the participants eat whatever they wanted, with no food logging or anything else to track their nutrition by themselves.”

The sleep duration was increased for the sleep extension group by 1.2 hours per night on average, which led to a significant decrease in energy intake compared to the control group. The people from the sleep extension group consumed some 270 kilocalories on average less, which is quite significant given that recommended daily intake is 2,000 kilocalories for women and 2,500 for men.

“No significant treatment effect in total energy expenditure was found, resulting in weight reduction in the sleep extension group vs the control group,” the study reads.

While finding ways to lose weight was not the actual focus of the study, the findings show that fixing and maintaining healthier sleeping habits can have a significant impact on a person’s body weight, the researchers said.

“If healthy sleep habits are maintained over longer duration, this would lead to clinically important weight loss over time,” Tasali said. “Many people are working hard to find ways to decrease their caloric intake to lose weight – well, just by sleeping more, you may be able to reduce it substantially.”

Previous studies into the relationship between body weight and sleeping habits suggested a similar result. A 2016 study conducted by researchers at King’s College London, for instance, suggested that sleep deprivation may cause people to consume more food the following day, netting a jump in calories intake of some 385 kcal on average.

Communism is more effective at helping you lose weight and it lasts longer too…

If you’re sleeping, guess you can’t be having frequent “healthy snacks”.

Intermittent fasting (as simple as having coffee for breakfast) plus low carb works wonders. See “The Obesity Code” by Dr. Jason Fung for more details.

When you start fasting (recommended) and cutting carbs, you should just be honest and recognize you are eating less, though it does accelerate weight loss to do it this way.

Exactly. More time sleeping means less time eating. No mystery there.

Spear previewed JAMA sez…”loose!” Smart quipping designated loser sez…”we’ll fight in the shade!”

Sleep may be a “habit” for some. For others its habitat incognita. Or maybe habitattoo’s Fantasy Island that comes on one night in seven, or so, & Tom Hanks & Mr. Wilson & Gilligan & Lord of the Flies rowing 4000 miles to Timor, etc, the other six nights.

Look folks any one who is honest knows the only way for serious and permanent weight loss is meth.

The meth not only reduces to basically zero desire for food but also with consistent use causes your teeth to fall out thus stuck with a liquid diet that ensures the weight stays off!

Ask yourself, when have you last seen even one obese/fat meth head?!

glyphosate kills your gut biome and high carbs make your liver unhappy. This is all there is to that diet, besides calorie restriction inherent.

Keto is healthy and safe, but you will need carbs eventually.
That is where most go back to bad dietary habits
Just avoid processed foods and all will be well.

Carbs are not necessary to live.

However I am a sugar carb addict.

Once I start eating after I get up I will eat all day. But if fast I can avoid eating till about 3pm.

Lost 40 pounds and now maintaining a healthy weight

I don’t care what anyone says, the key to maintaining a proper weight is to STOP EATING SO MUCH!
People will say, “oh, its glandular” , or “I don’t eat that much”, but if you will look at the movies of the Allies rescuing the holocaust victims, not one of them was fat. Did they not have “fat glands” back then? You use to have to go to a circus to see people as fat as over half the population is now. I used to laugh at fat people that told me I couldn’t quit smoking because I had no will power! Well, I did quit cigarettes over fifteen years ago – and I didn’t get fat as a result. If you are fat, its because you want to be fat, its really that simple!

This is it. I spent most my life skinny fit and active, but a few times I have been brought pretty low and balooned up. Keto lost it once, fitness another time, this time, I am just learning to enjoy being a bit hungry more often. No need to fear starvation. I also supplement a lot and that really brings down hunger, but not as well as natural nutrition.

There are a lot of nuanced explanation that matter because they can provide solutions to those individual challenges. Don’t cast stones, if you don’t have the brain damage, conditioning, and physiology to overcome.

It can be done by anyone, but to work, the challenges of the individual needs be considered, but ultimately, it is habits and expectations, and powerful brain signals that need to be managed.

Endocrine dysfunction is something not a lot of health systems want to spend the money investigating for individuals. Especially since they want us sick and dead, not healthy. Hormone replacement has a place in people living far past catastrophic endocrine disruption due to environment or vaccine.

Plastics and artificial sweeteners are proven fat pills, so use glass at home as much as you can and just eat sugar if you need it. You do sometimes. Give your body the real stuff and it will tell you what you need, if you are disciplined and mindful for long enough to train it.

More health advice. Great.
Just like sitting at the bank drive up looking at a sign that says, Buckle Up!
Or my new car that says, Obey All Traffic Laws! When you engage GPS.
After the flu I really hate signs in bathrooms that say Wash Your Hands!

Do I sound grouchy? Lack of sleep?

If you want to lose weight and be healthy doing it,
Eat unprocessed fresh food. Eat meat and fat. Especially
game animals you kill and butcher yourself. You know that is fresh and
prepared properly.
Eat minimal carbohydrate rich food that isn’t a fresh vegetable or fruit
and eat that in moderation. Meat and fats.
Don’t drink fruit juice. Eat fruit.. And exercise in
some manner 70 minutes a day. it doesn’t have to be
all at once. Walk around for 20 minutes, chop wood for 10,
shovel snow for 15, and find 30 more minutes a day not sitting
on your ass all through the day.
And NEVER eat vegetable oil (corn, canola, palm etc.) as a cooking agent, or in any food.
Peanuts, olives, avocados and any seeds AREN’T vegetables.

Vegetable oils are poison, and it’s in everything. ESPECIALLY processed food.
That includes mayonnaise. Make your own with a blender and healthy oils (olive, avocado)
It’s WAY more delicious too and takes less than 3 minutes to prepare.
Read labels.
