“Grading practices must counteract institutional biases that have historically rewarded students with privilege and punished those without, and also must protect student grades from our own implicit biases,” he said.
I will keep that in mind when I assign our homeschool grades this year.

Grades have always been more about division than about measurement. I mean if the goal is to actually educate someone, then educate them. Don’t just test everyone at some arbitrary point, cheer on some, scorn others, and move them all on to be someone else’s problem next year. The fundamental mechanism of MOST educational structures is completely misguided and a failure.

Too many categories. “Standard Nearly Met” is the same as “Standard Not Met”, but is included separately to make an unthinking reader believe that somehow “Standard Nearly Met” is NOT the same as “Standard Not Met”. Otherwise, why does that “Nearly Met” category even exist? Clearly, if one only “Nearly Survived” a car accident one is still just as dead as one who did “Not Survive”.

Also, usually one uses green to show good things in a chart and red to show bad things–but not the SFUSD. Unless dump-ass blacks is the objective, then green is a good thing and blacks have more green in the chart than all other races.

Exactly. I can just imagine the poor kid filling out the form and not knowing what he was other than African American.
I filled out many forms for years as “Other” because there was no check mark option for white. After 3 or so years of living in the US, I mentioned it at a party and someone told me that I should have chosen Caucasian. I told him but that that didn’t make sense, given that I am not from the Caucasus region. True story.
I always check “Other” and when they leave a blank, write “American”.

I think Blacks are about 80% of government employees in Tallahassee but only about 5% of government workers. 1) Only 66% of Asians meet the standard, the most mathy of people, supposedly.

3) The good news is that if you add up the red bars from all of the races, you get more than 100%, so everybody exceeded the standard. Problem solved!

OP here. I noticed also, but I wasn’t going to go down that road. However, now that it has reared its ugly head, I followed your link, only to get the standard cookie-put-on that I always, always, decline. So I didn’t get to that roll-over bit.
Nonetheless, I suspect that the number you give (3%, from their source roll-over), is rounded-up ‘a bit’. Or else nobody can do an accurate bar-graph. The two portions on the right (‘failed’, for each) add up to 91% (74% and 17%). The two portions to the left (‘met’, and ‘exceeded’), if accurate, should be sized 2/3 and 1/3, respectively (only 9 points left to divvy up, and one, they say, has 3 of those points, so the other MUST have 6 points). They are NOT so sized. CA is hiding something. Just another reason I left after 50 yrs.
I also note that the only bar (on the graph for this article, at least) that is NOT grayed-out is the ‘average’ bar, meant to draw your attention (and mine) away from the bad news by making said bad news appear better via ‘the average’.
I’m sure the chart looks pretty much the same for every other subject.

My question: what is it that creates high-achieving blacks from africa vs. the low/non-achieving blacks of the US? And are those high-achieving blacks from africa really high-achieving when compared with US Whites — or is their hometown educational system so lax that they stand out from the pack?
I worked years ago in koreatown in LA … and saw all sorts of ‘credentials’ from Korea being passed as if they were somehow meaningful. Well — some of the Koreans later admitted to me that many of those ‘credentials’ were from worthless ‘universities’ … and that a degree from them was quite meaningless — but, to those of US in the United States they somehow made a positive impression due to our ignorance and/or lack of vetting of the people and their credentials.
