Study links ultra-processed foods to dementia and cognitive decline

Via Washington Examiner

Ultra-processed foods might go easy on a person’s taste buds and wallet, but a new study now suggests they are linked to dementia and cognitive decline.

The study, titled “Association Between Consumption of Ultraprocessed Foods and Cognitive Decline,” was published Monday in JAMA Neurology and reported that people who consume ultra-processed foods as 20% of their daily calories could be at a greater risk for cognitive decline.

Pizza, hot dogs, cookies, cakes, doughnuts, candy, and ice cream are all examples of ultra-processed foods, which are defined as “industrial formulations of food substances [oils, fats, sugars, starch, and protein isolates] that contain little or no whole foods and typically include flavorings, colorings, emulsifiers, and other cosmetic additives,” per the study.

If a person consumes 2,000 calories a day, 20% is 400 calories, and a McDonald’s Big Mac comes in at at least 560 calories.

“In a cohort study of 10 ,775 individuals, higher consumption of [ultra-processed] foods was associated with a higher rate of global and executive function decline after a median follow-up of 8 years,” the study reported.

The individuals, ages 35 to 74, were followed for a decade and questioned multiple times in order to gauge any changes to their mental state while reporting their dietary habits.

Tests included those evaluating word recall, verbal fluency, and word recognition.

“These findings suggest that limiting consumption of [ultra-processed] food could be associated with reduced cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults,” the study read.

“A higher percentage of daily energy consumption of [ultra-processed] foods was associated with cognitive decline among adults from an ethnically diverse sample. These findings support current public health recommendations on limiting [ultra-processed] food consumption because of their potential harm to cognitive function.”

If It wasn’t around 150 years ago, don’t eat it.
Avoid seed oils at all costs. Especially restaurant oil.
It’s cheap so even expensive places use it.

My grandmother never ate any of these foods she ate chicken ,potatoes and bananas . The result was her heart was healthy and strong yet she spent the last 10 years of her life from 76 to 86 declining mentally. Was it from a lack of cholesterol intake ? Was it genetic? Who knows my father came out of my surgery at 73 with what they called post operative dementia lol . Did he have a stroke under anesthesia we don’t know he died 3 months later. All these studies should have the caveat but you are going to die anyway.

My mom will be 93 y.o. soon. Her genetic heritage is unknown; she was adopted.
Most all of the men relatives on dad’s side died before the age of 65. (back as far as the 1850’s that I could find). My dad had little “quality of life” for ~5yrs. until he passed. But then, he was a true believer in modern medicine. Prostate CA> bone CA> Hospice visits at home> death. Nothing good about that.
I stayed in the house with mom for about a week, it was obvious that the time was close…then one night at about 3:00 am I snapped awake, and I knew, I don’t know how, I just knew he was gone. Walked in to see dad, placed my hand on his arm and I was amazed at how fast the body heat was falling.
I guess that makes me, age-wise….running on empty? lol

Had a call on a dishwasher repair the other day. The lady said it would not start.

She was 95 years old.

I checked it, and it started right up. Nothing wrong. She just forgot how to turn it on.

she suggested that maybe it was so old it was wearing out, and now she needed to push the button twice.

MmmmKay…be sure to push the button twice, now.

And make the check out to…

I hope I’ll be able to get along if I make it to that age. There ain’t nobody coming to care for me.

And the sedentary modern lifestyle. And fat “acceptance” – which is nothing more than disease acceptance. How is THAT “empowerment”, girls? We should be “fat-phobic” – it’s the number one cause of preventable early death and constant ill health.

And beyond some pleasing plumpness on an otherwise strong, curvy (not one curve like a sphere) girl, it’s gross. We’re not wrong – you are. It’s a fine line between pleasingly plump and revoltingly rotund.

I blame the experts for this too. They suggest your diet should be made up of seven types of carbohydrates a day. This chart is exactly backwards barring the sweets, sweets belong in the carb layer. They’ve been selling this shit for close to a century. Trust the experts.

Some years ago, a prof from Auburn(?) bought Big Macs, Taco Bell crap, Booger King, et al and analyzed the “meat”. What his team found was amazing.

Most “meat” was filler – paper, cellulose, grains, etc. Seem to remember that average was 50/50 meat/filler, w/ Taco Bull being the worst at 37-38% meat.

According to neurologist Dr. Russell Blaylock, MSG is an excito-toxin that burns out brain cells. It’s hidden in processed foods by calling it yeast extract, (unspecified) spices, natural flavoring, etc. I can’t remember right now, but there’s at least a couple dozen names that they use to hide MSG.

Modified food starch is another cloak for MSG.

Excitotoxins are awful for children’s brain development:

Food ingredients should be visible foods, not words.

Excitoxins’ possible long-term side effects:

destruction of neurons.
obesity.
thyroid conditions.
infertility.
brain damage.
degenerative brain diseases.

Aspartame is pure poison, too:
https://www.google.com/search?q=excitotoxins+side+effects&ei=21mSY_XLCO6w5NoPjMufcA&ved=0ahUKEwi1peCc_ur7AhVuGFkFHYzlBw4Q4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=excitotoxins+side+effects&gs_lcp=Cgxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAQAzIFCCEQoAE6CggAEEcQ1gQQsAM6BQghEKsCOgYIABAWEB46CAgAEBYQHhAPOgUIABCGAzoFCAAQkQI6BQguEIAEOgUIABCABEoECEEYAEoECEYYAFCBFFjvP2DvQmgCcAF4AIABgwGIAZAOkgEEMjAuM5gBAKABAcgBBsABAQ&sclient=gws-wiz-serp

They’re in all prepared “foods” like convenience store garbage such as meat sticks and everything else they shouldn’t be allowed to call food. American slop is banned for import into many Euro countries.

If you, for whatever reason, are buying packaged/canned “food” then buying items with the shortest ingredient list should be a good start. Then chop-smash the “food”. Proceed to boil the stuff and drain off the water, multiple times if you want. This process should remove most of the added ingredients. Add, if you have any on hand, flavorings to make your now ultra-ultra processed meal taste palatable.

I eat grass finished beef, my chickens, venison, eggs and occasionally some fermented veggies from our garden. In my 70s, workout daily, enjoy quality time with my gal several times a week, run with my dogs and am active in my life long affair with glass art. Among numerous other things.

The only eating out I’ve done in the last 30 years was The Sushi Den in Denver and I left CO in 2014. Yeah I’ve got a ton of canned foods for the coming nightmare but in the meantime, that shit stays on the shelves.

You have to have an early death wish to eat seed oils, soda and boxed garbage. Your choice.

What is so hard to grasp? Our depleted national soils due to mono culture farming, glyphosates, defoliants, gmo’s, etc. The Fatal Drug Admin approving any kind of poisonous shit as long as the ‘creator’ has the right kind of hand shake (and bribe).
Been a food snob since the 80s, former spouse could not cook, I had to learn to survive! Quickly learned that MSG did not agree with me (explosive shits, horrible gas pains, massive headaches, etc.). I was young and poor but I figured out how to eat AND cook well .
A few simple rules of thumb;
NO white, sugar, flour, or even potatoes!
NO veg oils, canola or seed oils!Olive, coconut, butter or lard (if you can find it NON hydrogenated!
NO HFCS, EVER!
If it comes in a box, bag or can, avoid if possible! If you must (out of laziness or need) READ the ingredients, if you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it, EVER!

We are being poisoned by our benevolent owners, if you allow it.

Hell, I don’t even care to eat in restaurants, if you do, I’d recommend peeking in the kitchen, paying close attention to the nationality and personal hygiene of the ‘person’ handling your ‘food’. Is the ‘chef’ of a race that REFUSES to flush their ass wipe?

Bon appetite, enjoy your choices!

Peace, L.

It’s a rare occasion I eat in a restaurant. I travel a lot in my work. I hit the grocery store and buy the foods I eat, and bring them to my room. I avoid going to fast food joints at all costs.
