Is Anyone Surprised? Left-Wing Media Doesn’t Like ‘Rich Men North Of Richmond’

Via ZeroHedge

Leftists across America have been triggered.

That’s probably not going to come as a shock to anyone, but the establishment media and woke social media response to Oliver Anthony’s gritty coal country ballad ‘Rich Men North Of Richmond’ is less than enthusiastic.  Much like their reaction to Jason Aldean’s ‘Try That In A Small Town’ which blew up the charts in the face of heavy media backlash, ‘Rich Men North Of Richmond’ is being derided as a “right wing anthem” laced with “conspiracy theories.”

‘Try That In A Small Town’ goes straight for the throat in pointing out the level of anger among rural Americans and conservatives when it comes to the chaos wrought by leftist ideology.  The message is bold – “Try that in our neck of the woods, and we’ll rain hell down on you.”  Democrats attacked the song as “thinly veiled racism” hearkening back to the days of southern lynch mobs – But of course, the race baiting tactic is long worn out and no one seems to care about the accusations anymore. And, rather hypocritically, leftists once again reveal their underlying racism by suggesting that a song about rising crime can only be about black people.

Oliver Anthony’s song is much more reserved and seems to take inspiration from protest songs of the 1960s and 1970s.  The sound is also rooted in the classic country tones of performers like Hank William’s Jr, escaping the boring overproduced robot music of the modern era.  Rich Men North Of Richmond is simple, but Anthony’s talent is undeniable. The song is also honest in its observations, so it’s not surprising that the media is unsettled by it.

The political left often brags about their loyalty to the working class, but like all communists, they see the working class as a tool to be exploited, not a valuable pillar of society that needs to be saved.  As soon as working men speak up in a way that runs contrary to the narrative, leftists seek to slap them back down again.

Initial social media complaints about the song sought to link it to racism, just as critics tried to do with Try That In A Small Town.  The suggestion was that “Rich Men North Of Richmond” was a Civil War reference in favor of the Confederacy and slavery.  When woke activists were educated on the fact that the phrase refers to rich politicians in Washington DC, they shifted to the classic argument that white America doesn’t really know what hardship is and that they are in no position to complain. That’s obviously nonsense, but reasoning with zealots is impossible.

The corporate media has taken a more subtle approach than usual to the song, stopping short of calling it a racist theme for lynch mobs.  However, they are running with the “right wing anthem” argument (and in their minds that label alone is supposed to be a very bad thing).

The specific criticisms of Rich Men are perhaps the most interesting aspect – For example, Rolling Stone made particular reference to ‘Regan era talking points’ like Anthony’s critique of fat people living on welfare. The political left has been engaged in an aggressive campaign to make “fat shaming” a form of hate speech, and they treat debates over welfare and entitlement programs as “archaic” and outdated.  It’s a common method of dismissing a political conflict by pigeonholing anyone in disagreement as being a caveman.

Strangely though, media commentators are even more annoyed by Rich Men’s lyrics referring most likely to Epstein’s Island, where “politicians look for minors.”  Rolling Stone called the reference ‘head turning’ and described Epstein’s trafficking of child sex slaves to wealthy elites and powerful political leaders as “alleged” – The events on Epstein’s Island are not a theory, they are factual and on record.  Keep in mind that this is the same Rolling Stone that attacked the film Sound Of Freedom, a movie about a real life child trafficking sting, as “Q-Anon conspiracy theory.”

The New York Daily News pointed out the reference while diminishing child trafficking as “…the center of many right wing conspiracy theories.”  According to the Department of Homeland Security, child trafficking is a global $150 billion a year business, often involving very wealthy participants.

It should be said that the establishment and the political left tends to reveal their true colors in the things that they try to sabotage.  The progressive attempt to diminish a talented songwriter singing about the plight of the blue-collar working man and the corruption of government indicates that these people don’t care at all about the working man and are invested in government corruption.  It’s a reality most of us are aware of, but it’s fun to hear about it in a song that makes leftists and media journalists squirm.

As of Monday morning, Anthony’s songs are the most popular on iTunes, according to data from Kworb.

The voice of the working-class is going viral.

I think it is a good song on several levels. It’s at 9M views so it qualifies as viral.

It is seldom brought up anymore, but corporate profits are at historically high levels while pay has been languishing since the 70s. We are not experiencing monetary inflation half as much as corporate gouging which looks absolutely like cartel behavior.

Honest whining is not virtuous whining. So long as the imperial exploitation was outward, the Christcucks liked the ride. Semper Fi. Law and order. But chickens have come home to roost. To wit, the wealth was sucked from outside the homeland to inside and to us (not me but us, you pests). We are the fatted calves now. Soft men make hard times. I hate (((Christian))) values. Sing them from the church spires over the highest hills. Won’t make a damn difference. For the past 100 years the Great White American Christcuck has been spreading the so-called TRUTH™. The perversion of the Great Commission is fecklessness when it’s not outright treason. “Know what you know! Know we know what you know we know we know, but what you don’t know we know. Know what I mean!”

tl;dr Your assessment, Iska, is objectively correct with brevity, hallmark of wit. On this rare occasion, I gave your comment an upvote. What an endorsement! Yours was good too, Copacop. Upvoted it too. I’m spreading love.

THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

63. Run in with Shame (AKA Reality Doug)

CHRISTIAN : Met you with nothing else in that valley?

FAITHFUL Yes, I met with Shame; but of all the men that I met with in my pilgrimage, he, I think, bears the wrong name. The others would be said nay, after a little argumentation, and somewhat else; but this bold-faced Shame would never have done. Christian: Why, what did he say to you?
Faithful: What! Why, he objected against religion itself; he said it was a pitiful, low, sneaking business for a man to mind religion; he said that a tender conscience was an unmanly thing; and that for a man to watch over his words and ways, so as to tie up himself from that hectoring liberty that the brave spirits of the times accustom themselves unto, would make him the ridicule of the times. He objected also, that but few of the mighty, rich, or wise, were ever of my opinion; nor any of them neither, before they were persuaded to be fools, and to be of a voluntary fondness, to venture the loss of all, for nobody knows what. He, moreover, objected the base and low estate and condition of those that were chiefly the pilgrims of the times in which they lived: also their ignorance and want of understanding in all natural science. Yea, he did hold me to it at that rate also, about a great many more things than here I relate; as, that it was a shame to sit whining and mourning under a sermon, and a shame to come sighing and groaning home: that it was a shame to ask my neighbor forgiveness for petty faults, or to make restitution where I have taken from any. He said, also, that religion made a man grow strange to the great, because of a few vices, which he called by finer names; and made him own and respect the base, because of the same religious fraternity. And is not this, said he, a shame?

CHRISTIAN: And what did you say to him?

FAITHFUL: Say! I could not tell what to say at the first. Yea, he put me so to it, that my blood came up in my face; even this Shame fetched it up, and had almost beat me quite off. But at last I began to consider, that “that which is highly esteemed among men, is had in abomination with God.” And I thought again, this Shame tells me what men are; but it tells me nothing what God or the Word of God is. And I thought, moreover, that at the day of doom, we shall not be doomed to death or life according to the hectoring spirits of the world, but according to the wisdom and law of the Highest. Therefore, thought I, what God says is best, indeed is best, though all the men in the world are against it. Seeing, then, that God prefers his religion; seeing God prefers a tender conscience; seeing they that make themselves fools for the kingdom of heaven are wisest; and that the poor man that loves Christ is richer than the greatest man in the world that hates him; Shame, depart, you are an enemy to my salvation! Shall I entertain you against my sovereign Lord? How then shall I look Him in the face at His coming? Should I now be ashamed of His ways and servants, how can I expect the blessing? But, indeed, this Shame was a bold villain; I could scarce shake him out of my company; yea, he would be haunting of me, and continually whispering me in the ear, with some one or other of the infirmities that attend religion; but at last I told him it was but in vain to attempt further in this business; for those things that he disdained, in those did I see most glory; and so at last I got past this importunate one. And when I had shaken him off, then I began to sing—

The trials that those men do meet withal,
That are obedient to the heavenly call,
Are manifold, and suited to the flesh,
And come, and come, and come again afresh;
That now, or sometime else, we by them may
Be taken, overcome, and cast away.
Oh, let the pilgrims, let the pilgrims, then
Be vigilant, and quit themselves like men.

CHRISTIAN: I am glad, my brother, that you withstood this villain so bravely. For of all, as you say, I think he has the wrong name. For he is so bold as to follow us in the streets, and to attempt to put us to shame before all men, that is, to make us ashamed of that which is good. But if he was not himself audacious, he would never attempt to do as he does. But let us still resist him, for notwithstanding all his bravadoes, he promotes the fool and none else. “The wise shall inherit glory,” said Solomon, “but shame shall be the promotion of fools.”

FAITHFUL: I think we must cry to Him for help against Shame, who would have us to be valiant for the truth upon the earth.

CHRISTIAN: You say true.

NOTES AND COMMENTARY

Along with Discontent, Faithful encounters one other foe in the Valley of Humiliation. He meets one whose name is Shame. Based on their conversation, Faithful’s impression is that Shame is misnamed. His name suggests one who feels a measure of guilt or inadequacy, one who is convicted of sin or embarrassed by his actions. But Shame has no shame for himself. He is intent on disgracing others, especially those who would put their hope in God.

Shame is a champion of the world and a reviler of ways of God. He values worldly vice not heavenly virtue. He mocks those who would give serious thought and attention to God’s Word.

Shame is convinced that religion is foolish and belief in God is a weakness. Religion may be fine for the poor and those who are less fortunate, but it is unbecoming to the educated and enlightened, those who should know better. It is not seemly for those who would be mighty, rich or wise in this world to so abase themselves. He scorns those who would ask forgiveness, feel conviction, make restitution, sorrow over sin, give benevolence to the poor, or label vices as sin. He thinks it a shame that people would be so taken in.

But Shame’s belief and boast should not surprise us. God’s ways are not man’s ways. Paul tells us:
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).

The very things that Shame would denigrate, God uses to display His power. The things that Shame would despise, God uses for His own glory. God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.

For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, that no flesh should glory in His presence (1 Corinthians 1:26-29).

What the world believes is wise “is foolishness with God” (1 Corinthians 3:19a). What the world highly esteems “is an abomination in the sight of God” (Luke 16:15).

Though Faithful is taken aback at first, he sees the emptiness of Shame’s objections. It is God and His Word that matter most, not man and his opinions. It is God who will one day judge the world. It is God who will receive all the glory. It is God who has highly exalted His Son “and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9–11). Christ is preeminent (Colossians 1:18). Having Christ is more valuable than having all the riches and accolades of this world. Paul goes on to say in Philippians:

But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ (Philippians 3:7-8).
Faithful is firm in his faith, but Shame is a persistent companion. Though Faithful attempts to ward him off, he keeps coming back, trying to make the world look more reasonable, trying to make religion look more futile.

Shame is a foe that we must be on guard against as well. He is one we are likely to meet on our own pilgrimage. He is the college professor who ridicules belief in God. She is the coworker who sees no need for God. He is the skeptic who has found reason to dismiss the claims of the Bible. We see Shame in the media as the Christian faith is portrayed as backward, irrational, and discriminatory. We hear his voice getting louder in our culture as Christianity is seen more and more to be out of step with shifting social standards.

We must meet Shame with courage and steadfastness. Like Paul, we must “not be ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation” (Romans 1:16). Jesus said:

For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels (Mark 8:38).

We must take God at His Word, count all things loss, and pray for divine help to stand firm in our faith.

Christian commends Faithful for bravely resisting Shame. And he reminds Faithful of the proverb:
The wise shall inherit glory,

But shame shall be the legacy of fools.

(Proverbs 3:35)
By scorning the gospel, the only way of salvation and life, Shame lost an inheritance of glory. His foolish choice will surely in the end lead him to shame.

He is intelligent, can be witty, and occasionally put up a post that deserves up votes…but he owns a vicious blasphemy spewing hatred for God & Christians, and a (who knows maybe well deserved) bitter experience with women…these 3 grinds are not necessary posted in that order…but if he is drunk posting he will work in all three.

When it comes to God and Believers Reality Doug fits Shame closely from Pilgrim’s Progress…that was why I posted it.

Your exegesis is so pure and profound, Screwy Centralizer.

What Christians say they are: “We are all God’s children. Turn the cheek. This life is meaningless. Spiritual treasure is all that matters. Pick up that personal cross. We’ve got to stand up! Somebody should do something? That crackpot deserves to rot in jail for life. Love the boyz in blue.”

What nearly all Christians are if you scratch the superficial surface: “Go fuck yourself raw. I got mine. Take care of me, daddy government (Romans 13).”

Screwy Centralizer, I don’t know if you should read Job or Jonah first. Maybe you should let the Lord judge me according to his patented mysterious way lest ye be judged unworthy? My purpose passeth all understanding (a tiny part of God’s plan), or can’t you ever understand that you don’t understand? So many flavors of Christianity. I favor Arianism because it’s less batshit insane.

For my advanced fans, see how the Good Book is pro-abortion in cases of female infidelity per Numbers 5. I like the patriarchy part: his bodies, his choice (with supernatural approval, of course). The way you folks think you know what the Bible says is just incredible. You seem so human prior to mental examination. I remember accepting the ‘basics’ from youth, and the actual words are so completely different. We can’t even agree that the sky is blue, that words mean what they mean or they can’t have authority.

Things are pretty much the same here that they’ve been as far as I can remember except for the absence of a few colorful commenters with much more social acceptance than me and no one to fill that void. The decline is everywhere. I can understand the AP lament. Anons everyone. Borg cube conformity. Individualistic culture is just too much for the herd mind to fathom, but it is why the West came to surpass all others, and its absence is why we lose. There is a vendetta for Western hegemony, and the small hats will not let others forget it. Those others use toilets and faucets every day and blame Whitey, blah, blah, we repeat ourselves. I missed you idiots.

A path? What kind of path? A path of optimal personal welfare for you? Then shop for the most enticing premade path, and the master of that path is your master. Stay brand loyal or try another brand?

Do you mean a path to victory in this culture war? Winning war and more properly sovereign power at all takes a team of real men and that means manly culture. That culture does not exist today for any heritage Western peoples. Men of the West are emasculated. There are groups of masculine savages, and that may be the cream of the crop on earth today.

Before we talk of paths, perhaps we should talk of topography and creating accurate maps. To seek’ what is’ is a Western principle not a path. Planning is more important than the plan, which is to say that the planner has high cultural value, marketable or not. If you can’t plan, you must obey. Perhaps that is best for you, to shop for the best carrot and stick combo special. People of that sort have little social value and become useless eaters rather quickly. Reminds me of a song.

Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is

Livin’ in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
And they don’t think you know, but I know that you do
‘Cause your dollar ain’t shit and it’s taxed to no end
‘Cause of rich men north of Richmond

I wish politicians would look out for miners
And not just minors on an island somewhere
Lord, we got folks in the street, ain’t got nothin’ to eat
And the obese milkin’ welfare

Well, God, if you’re 5-foot-3 and you’re 300 pounds
Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds
Young men are puttin’ themselves six feet in the ground
‘Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin’ them down

Lord, it’s a damn shame what the world’s gotten to
For people like me and people like you
Wish I could just wake up and it not be true
But it is, oh, it is

Livin’ in the new world
With an old soul
These rich men north of Richmond
Lord knows they all just wanna have total control
Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do
And they don’t think you know, but I know that you do
‘Cause your dollar ain’t shit and it’s taxed to no end
‘Cause of rich men north of Richmond

I’ve been sellin’ my soul, workin’ all day
Overtime hours for bullshit pay

francis schaeffer pointed out in his (i believe) 1976 book “How Should We then Live” that art was an accurate barometer of the overall mental state of the people, usually a predictor of a more general-population mood, with, of course, a msm gaslighting and attempting to nudge peeps away from reality.
this song could be a case in point.

Wrong. The specials have been doing culture war/incorporated war for millennia and are specialized for it. They are a giant sponsorship and sizeable intelligentsia. An ancient mercantile people learn to control the distribution of ideas, goods, services, and force. American Christians just have another distraction going nowhere. If you think MLK and blacks of the civil rights movement earned their gains, you are sadly mistaken. Please see Stanley David Levison and Harry H. Wachtel. Black activists were elevated stooges.

The same demographic that did the critical organization for the black activists did the lobbying of Congress and president(s) to make it look like black Americans pressured the U.S. Government to accommodate them. That public show is completely not what politically happened. The power behind the throne does not seek the limelight.

As for art the barometer, what is cause and what is effect? The whole modern art movement is a (((contrivance))). Please see Gertrude Stein, Léonce and Paul Rosenberg, and Leonard Lauder.

If that is too much, here is a video of Leonard Lauder explaining the relevant history of modren art:

Have you found your purpose in Life?

It’s a hard question, ain’t it?

The wisest among us work it out with fear and trembling. It’s a humbling experience to look Eternity right in the eye and not blink. Courage fails, faith prevails. It’s good to have both.

If you have either, you’ll know that I’m not mocking, but encouraging. We all have a road to walk.

Also? I’ve BEEN to Farmville. That dude will fucking kill you soon as look at you! On that topic I am most certain!!! Never met the dude, but I know the town!

He’d either sit on you and fart, or shoot you. Either way, you’re dead!
I also lived in Winchester a year or two. It’s a LOT safer than Farmville if you’re looking for trouble!

that’s sayin’ something in itself!

Interesting

We talk about how a plantation is being built all around us and then some people would give a guy a hard time for pointing it out, in his words.

Why can’t we all get on the same side?

I get the sentiment and I agree with it. I just think the lyrics are unsubtle. It’s unfair to compare to one of the best songs ever, but compare to Wichita Lineman. That being said, he’s clearly hit a nerve.

Why do you judge the world (US) as if we never left the 20th century?

” but compare to Wichita Lineman. ”

Or maybe we can compare a screwdriver to a hammer. Or a dog to a tennis shoe.

Wichita Lineman is known and admired because it is a beautiful love song. Anthony’s song has gone viral because it points out an actual, real life, situation that every working person knows and is getting ANGRY about. Whether his words are not poetic or polished enough probably has a little bit to do with his subject matter; it is not a poetic or refined subject.

The American working class has been screwed every way imaginable. People are not looking for subtlety of expression. This is about survival.

Oliver lassoed the Zeitgeist that apparently eluded you. Either that or you simply have an ungracious soul. Be the man I know you to be. Don’t deny what he makes you feel.

I’ll admit I didn’t want to like him at first. Then I realized that was just the poison in my own soul holding me back. I love this guy like a brother. Just can’t help it any more.

I enjoy this mans lyrics and wish him the best in the future.

Many artists including musicians have spoken out against things mentioned in this tune but nice to see many seem to be listening to theses messages at the moment.

I remain and will always be a rocker, that said,do appreciate talent in other musical forms and this man has some real raw talent.

I will say not one song on that top 20 really gets my attention like some songs from me past,hmmmmm…..,guess I am getting old!

Andean is a sellout. He’s one of them. Oliver Anthony seems like the real deal. Anthony is FAR more talented. I’ve seen others comment on Andean at the Vegas fake shooting so the cats outta the bag there hopefully.

A couple of weeks ago the kids took me to see this guy-

Awesome concert, the crowd was whiter than a Lynrd Skynyrd concert in 1977, and lyrics like this really hit home with the New England audience-

If I get too close
And I’m not how you hoped
Forgive my northern attitude
Oh, I was raised out in the cold
If the sun don’t rise
‘Til the summertime
Forgive my northern attitude
Oh, I was raised on little light…

There is a dawning of the people that they don’t recognize yet, but it is rising.

Old Uncle Remus would not approve. Rule # 1? C’mon. You know.

“STAY AWAY FROM CROWDS”

Feels good to tease the Devil and get away with it though, don’t it?

Just don’t go the well too often. I’ve oddly grown fond of you. I mean it’s odd that I’ve grown fond of you, not that I’m fond of you oddly. That would just be fuckin’ weird!

Everything south of Bowling Green with the exception of Richmond was still reliably conservative country when I left…especially to the west. Miss the good folks I grew up with. Government? Not one fucking bit.
