The Progress on National EV Charging Stations

Guest Post by Martin Armstrong

Electric CarsGovernments globally are in a rush to transition away from fossil fuels. The US government threw $7.5 billion at the fabricated problem in 2022 to build a network of  EV charging stations. The Infrastructure Law of November 2021 promised to build half a million charging stations throughout the nation by 2030.

So, how is the government doing on this lofty promise? They have built a grand total of SEVEN charging stations in four states since the bill was passed. The Department of Transportation has failed to comment on the slow roll out, while the Federal Highway Administration insists they are carefully choosing their locations, with their paid for politicians claiming it will be “as easy as finding a gas station.”

Electric Car Charing

The government is confident that it can achieve this target as early as 2027 – only three years from now. They make promises without having a plan in place. Biden believes half of all new car sales will be electric by 2030 per the climate change initiative. Only 7.6% of vehicles in the country are electric, and both consumers and the private sector have vocally stated that they do not want to switch away from their current vehicles. It is an unreasonable request. Not only are these vehicles more expensive and less reliable, but there are simply not enough charging stations to make them a viable option.

The government will continue throwing money at the non-existent problem. They awarded $2.5 billion in grants to implement these stations in disadvantaged communities where no one can actually afford to buy an electric vehicle. I have written countless articles about the costs associated with EVs. Funny enough, aside from gasoline, the production of EVs is not climate-friendly in the least.

The real goal is to make car ownership less obtainable. This all falls into line with Agenda 2030 and the plans for 15-minute cities where transportation will be public and not private.

The private sector does not want EVs. They see that the demand is simply not there, and they have been pushing back on these measures. These Marxists who want to seize the means of production fail to realize that there is no progress without innovation, and companies are not going to transition into non-profit organizations to support the climate zealots. In December 2023, over 3,000 auto dealers from all 50 states penned a letter to President Joe Biden, explaining that his target of forcing 50% of all car purchases to be electric by 2030 is unattainable.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory at the US Department of Energy believes the US needs 1.2 million charging stations by 2030, with the White House aiming for 500,000. They have built SEVEN charging stations. The private sector does not want to manufacture more EVs, and the people do not want to buy them. The government utterly ignores its constituents and expects us to obey its outlandish commands without taking into consideration why policies will and have failed.

It’s climate change into springtime, so now is when EV owners forget their cars that their cars will strand them when the climate changes back to winter.

Lithium extraction from brine in old and likely new oil/gas production wells in Texas is becoming a topic of interest. How many you think will refuse the dollar from such extraction?

All those EV charging stations are not powered by the electrical grid. They are powered by diesel generators. We’re not going to make it as a species, are we?

That’s the agenda they’re pushing on US …

Anon, Yep, the stupid runs deep doesn’t it. As a species we deserve extinction–not so much for all the latest hair-brained schemes, but because we let idiots rule over us.
If we think it is hard to build out all those charging spots wait until they try to fill ’em up with electricity. Its a shame they’re wasting everything on such a stillborn idea. By the time they’ve built seven more stations everyone will know the fad has come and gone and production of EVs will cease. Some patriotic engineer should make adapters to convert charging ports to “ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE ELECTRIFICATION STATIONS”. That would make it all worthwhile.

EVs could have a place in heavily populated metro metropolis areas. I cannot imagine diesel fumes being the “answer”! In Texas though, too bad you should you be stuck in a traffic jam in Houston or DFW behind my diesel emitting diesel fumes as they are “good” for you. 🙂 Automobiles “leak”.

It’s not 1960 anymore. Modern Diesel and gas engines don’t emit ‘fumes’. Stop with the BS.

And we are going back to the moon in 2020, 2025,… er 2030. Let’s have a contest and bet which happens first. We build 500,000 new charging stations or we go to the moon. I am betting neither one happens.

We need to go to the moon first before we can go back, Jack.

I saw a commenter the other day who said that in order to meet the truck charging needs for their mandates, we’d need 15,000 new charging stations built PER MONTH for the next 18 years! Seriously…some sanity and reality are needed.

A astute reader posted that the cables are about 3 pounds of copper each,and…..,when not in charge mode safe to remove…….,hmmmmmmmmm.

A little over 4 bucks a pound right now.

And replacing the cables costs thousands of dollars each.

But the backstory MARTIN….is the continuing exponential growth of GOVERNMENT!!!…..which you seem to be cheering,NOT promoting a much smaller version which is truly sustainable, serves the needs of The People and not subjugate them with junk, like the Soviets……..
You cheer for corporate fascism…you’re one of THEM!……

The idea is not to get us into electric cars. It is to get us out of cars.

Joey promised EV charging stations…he didn’t say where though. Turns out they’re all in Ukraine. BTW the Russians destroyed most and Joey will need another billion or so to rebuild them….bend over.

In five years, you won’t be able to give away an EV.

Let’s see, $60,000 for the new car. By 70,000 or 80,000 miles, it will need a new battery, which costs $20,000. So if you’re stupid enough to buy one of those, it costs you $80,000 to drive 70,000 to 80,000 miles, just in the cost of the car, not to mention electricity.

Would anyone buy an ICE car that you knew would need a completely new drivetrain after 70,000 to 80,000 miles? Hell, no!

EVs aren’t for everyone, but your numbers also are incorrect.

My car currently has 102590 miles at 10 years old. I hope to get another 5 years out of it before buying a another car.

And the future is to repair the batteries, not replace them.

LoL. Let’s repair them.

First, they don’t last forever. Sure you can tear apart the pack and replace a few end of life cells, but you’ll be at it again in a few months as more age out.

From all the cells I’ve looked at, generally speaking, they are rated for 5 years at best. Environmental conditions also play a role. Storage and (moreso) hard use at temperature extremes shorten their lifetime further.

There’s also something to be said about load balancing. The replacement cells will not match performance/capacity of originals. Uneven wear adds further difficulty.

In this age of litigation, what auto shop can honestly let you drive away on a “repaired pack?” I haven’t ran into one in the last 20 years that would let me drive off with snow tires on only the driven axle. This is magnitudes potentially more $$$ in a lawsuit.

Your numbers don’t make any sense. My car is 10 years old with a 10 year old battery, which is still going. Where do you get a few months to 5 years? A repaired battery, depending on how it’s repaired of course, should be able to go another 5 years at least.

Probably most EV batteries will last a long time, just like most engines. The problem is, if it goes out, it will cost way more to replace than if an engine went out, if you can even get a replacement battery.

at a billion dollars per charging station, it is obvious it is a govt program.
