Because the world moves on (read The Dark Tower by Stephen King [even if you think you don’t like Stephen King]), sometimes you have to adapt. Even curmudgeons sometimes have to adapt (or die – also a valid choice).
Over time, software changes. The software platform that this blog runs on (WordPress) is constantly being updated to make improvements and also to beef up security against malicious bots, people, and code — which is a very real thing on the interwebs and which would [TODAY] take TBP off the Internet without playing constant defense against it.
When the platform changes, all the other code that runs on that platform has to update along the way. I’ve left the commenting plugin that we run on TBP un-updated for many, many years and there started to be some functional and some security issues with the old code.
At the same time, some of the other plugins (that affect how commenting works) we’re running on the site abruptly decided to start charging fees that would have made this site financially unviable. So we had to make some decisions and part of those decisions involved finally updating the commenting plugin.
I’m still messing with settings, trying to make the new version work as closely as possible to the old version. There are some definite improvements. For example:
Embedding Images
You no longer have to click a link and paste the URL for an image into a box at the top of the page.
You can now just paste the image URL directly into the comment box and the image should render as an image (not a URL) when your comment is posted. Try it and let me know below if it doesn’t work, exactly HOW it doesn’t work and I’ll fix it.
Use the comments on this post to tell me what’s not working. But you have to tell me in a way that I can understand what’s actually not working. Here’s an example of something I can’t do anything about:
“When I try to post an image it doesn’t work.”
Here’s an example of something I can do something about:
“When I tried to reply to BL’s comment above, it wouldn’t post and I received an error message pop-up that said “invalid e-mail” – and the error message kept activating no matter what (correct) e-mail I typed in.
So I logged in to respond. Which is something I won’t be able to do always. Can the e-mail trigger be deactivated? Or not?”
A lot of what you tell me is probably going to be specific to your particular setup and I probably won’t be able to fix that. But if there is something that is really not working for everyone (or many), then that’s something I can probably do something about.
So, just to be clear, it will still be necessary to use a service like ‘postimg.cc’ that you upload and image to, obtain a direct link to the image, before you can post it in a reply, correct?

The comment loading happens quite differently now and should be faster / more efficient than it used to be.
Thanks for the site. It is the last one I know you don’t have to sign up for and give your name and email address. I used to use SHTF and they went to that policy and now have no posters. While some posters are just trolls, idiots and jokers, there are still mostly meaningful posts and good discussions, along with hyperlinks from other websites that give new information.

a leading space gets pasted into the “Enter link:” field (my problem),

YouTube only shows hyperlink, and not the “click play,” preview. Minor inconvenience, IMHO.

On my desktop with Firefox, it shows the video with the arrow that you click to play, but on my iPhone it only shows the hyperlink, so this problem is a device/browser issue.

10-4. I was referencing the prior version of Word Press, in which pasting a URL into the comments would produce an image of the video, in which one would click on image to play video. Kinda lazy thought of watching in situ vs leaving TBP to watch a video.

I just tried looking at it with my phone and I see what I think you see, so I’ll try to figure out how to make phones see the site correctly, but honestly, it’s stupid to read websites with a telephone.
EDIT: Ok, now phone people should be seeing video embeds too. But you all should still get a computer to look at websites.

Not sure what the ‘problem’ is, or if it can be fixed, but some of my comments simply won’t post. With or without links or uploads in my comment, just text.
This has been happening before the new ‘comments plugin’ and after the change.
Before, when I tried to post a comment, there was some sort of a tiny animated toggle button in the upper right-hand corner of the TBP’s webpage that seemed to be on a loop, moving back and forth (left and right), for as long as I watched – but no post.
I just tried to post a response to a commenter on another article and – there is a multi-bar flicker in the upper right-hand corner (looks like the charge level reading on a cell phone). It flickers once, then no post.
I have had the same issue occasionally, with the same “toggle button” movement, but no post. I have had some success getting the comment posted by breaking the comment into segments; My comments usually include a link, so I try posting the link as a stand-alone; if that works, I’ll edit in the rest of the comment.
(When I say occasionally, I’m guessing something like 1 in 20 posts, no regular pattern that I could see.)
Too soon to say if the problem still exists in the new version for me.
If you are using Brave Browser on Ubuntu it will not allow you to post if your shields are UP. Once the shields for this site are down, comments flow like the shit out of TCS’s keyboard.

I can’t find any settings that disallow posting comments with links. It may be something general that has no options like some quantity of external links tripping the “this must be spam” threshold.
We’re going to have to get used to this new anti-spam plugin or, after we try it for a week or so, decide it’s not working and look for something else. At the moment I’d say that so far its benefits are exceeding its costs but that could change.
Some embedded links post ok, others not. Maybe they are running it through some DNS filter? In any case, it’s not hard to remove the link from the text, just need to be aware of it so the comment will post.

I haven’t been able to discern the difference – in the content of my posts or the website response when I try to post them – between those that show up as comments and those that don’t. No URLs or embedded links and correct email and several efforts and – nada, or success with a youtube video in my comment.
I’ve been able to post a comment on one article and then, moments later, discover I can’t post a comment in a different article. The most common articles where i find myself unable to post are Kunstler’s Monday and Friday contributions. Especially after I point out how big his nose has become.
I wasn’t able to post s brief compliment to Doug on the amazing evolution of his writing in his article “On Perspective and Prerogatives…” That was frustrating. Lots of grunting and I couldn’t download my ‘once a year’ compliment.
My eyes thank you profusely for turning the light grey text to a readable black.

I posted yesterday on a thread that wouldn’t post, the little working bar in the upper right corner would do one or two cycles and stop, and not publish my comment. I attributed it to maybe to long of a reply.
Just now I tried posting a short reply and it too wouldn’t publish. I cut my reply to two lines and it published. The second line contained two words that I abbreviate, eg “get them” abbreved to get (comma) m. It won’t publish the abbreviated form.

I think that when you see what you call the “little working bar” in the upper right corner, that is the new anti-spam plugin we had to install to replace another one that decided to start charging pretty insane amounts of money to keep you all from having to read about buying viagra from nigerian princes every other comment.

We’re still fine-tuning everything and it should get better over time, but there are always compromises between convenience and security. If we turned off the spam filtering on here, you really would hardly be able to find any real comments from real people among all the bullshit that the bots are constantly posting.

My first thought is that websites are made to be viewed on computers and telephones are made for talking to your girlfriend.
But more specifically, the plugin defaulted to not rendering the rich toolbar on mobile devices for speed concerns. I didn’t notice because I use my phone for talking to my girlfriend like a sensible person. I just switched it to render on phones. Let me know if it still doesn’t work.

Seems I’m having intermittent issues with publishing comments. Some threads I can comment and it publishes, others not so much. Same session. I published a comment under the autoban article and it went fine, but my next comment under Orwell would not publish, using Brave.
I switched to firefox and the comments would publish but very few comments would display. Under Brave I can see all the comments but not the ones I published with firefox.
The text I was trying to publish under the Orwell article is as follows

When you are fearful and possibly lose what you have…. you will more likely bow your knees and follow the overlords decrees. THEY know this….

If the reason you can’t post is because the new anti-spam plugin is registering your post as spammy (which is something I can’t know because you are basically just telling me “it didn’t work” without any specific details about exactly how it didn’t work which is what I would need to try to find out why it didn’t work), then it likely doesn’t matter what browser you are using. What matters is the content of the post and possibly your IP address.
If the reason you can’t post (again I can’t tell from just a “didn’t work” report) is because your browser is very old and can’t speak javascript, then it could matter which browser you are using.
It’s possible that the new anti-spam plugin we are trying out is just too restrictive and if so, we’ll go hunting for another solution. I know it’s frustrating not to be able to post but it would be more frustrating (I’m pretty sure) if you had to sort through all the spam that would be on these pages without some filtering.
IMO patience with the threads one cannot post is worth trying to safeguard against a multitude of bad guys trying to hack, crack, spam the works. Assholes that manage to steal others identity and steal from others accounts regardless the source is more and more prevalent. Never know who but certainly Arabs and Israelis among the bad guys…and Chinese and…
