Elizabeth Packard disagreed with her husband on religion.

While this might not seem like a big deal today, when you were a woman married to a preacher in the mid-1800s, it was a HUGE deal.

Elizabeth became increasing bold in stating her religious opinions openly—as well as her anti-slavery views and support for abolitionist John Brown.

So in 1860 her husband exercised his legal right to have her committed to an insane asylum.

Elizabeth spent three years in the asylum before being deemed incurable. She was released back to the custody of her husband, who locked her in a room and nailed the windows shut.

International Man: Since the start of the Covid hysteria, Americans have snitched on people for not wearing a mask, called the police when their neighbors had guests over at their house, and reported businesses that were not compliant.

Has the US become a nation of snitches?

Doug Casey: Without doubt, the US is transforming from a nation of whipped dogs into something much worse, a nation of squealing rats. It’s because fear is being used by the powers that be to “unite” the country, much the way the inmates of a prison are united.

We’ve always had snitches, of course, starting with the silly little girls in Salem that turned in “witches” for keeping to themselves or gathering medicinal plants. More recently, the government has cultivated a class of snitches looking to profit from others they think aren’t paying their “fair share” of taxes. More recently, we’ve encouraged snitches to seek out suspected terrorists—which constituted a near-zero threat. And now, we have plague snitches.

Imagine you’re sitting around the table with your family, inhaling the aroma as grandpa begins to carve the turkey, and there’s a knock at the door.

Is it a late guest? A neighbor dropping by?

No, it’s a health official or the police there to quell your gathering because somebody snitched on you for making the decision to spend time with the people you love.

It certainly sounds dystopian, doesn’t it? Or like something from a country under enemy rule? Hundreds of St. Louis citizens who snitched to the government about businesses that defied closure orders are discovering that their messages are not confidential and their identities are subject to sunshine laws.

As part of the effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus, some city and state leaders have forced businesses they deem “nonessential” to shut down. St. Louis County encouraged people to report any such businesses that are still open via an online form.

The county received more than 900 complaints. And the complaints, apparently, were not anonymous. Indeed, they’re public records subject to the state’s sunshine laws. Now people who are angry at the extent and duration of government shutdown orders are using those laws to expose the people who filed the complaints.
