WIND BENEATH HER WINGS

My wife danced to this song with her father on our wedding day 23 years ago. He was the wind beneath her wings. He was her hero. He was the wind beneath the wings of nine children, over two dozen grandchildren, and a half dozen great grandchildren. He was a great man. There will forever be a hole in our hearts. We’ll miss you terribly. Farewell Pop.

Did you ever know that you’re my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
for you are the wind beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I’ve got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.

“He was a great man.”. As you and your family grieve your loss, take comfort in the legacy of love and integrity that he leaves and that can never be destroyed. May your faith be a source of strength and grace.

Avalon and Jim,

My sympathy for your loss. In any close knit family, the bond between father and daughter(s) is strong, special and goes beyond description. I cannot imagine the pain in your heart, Avalon, but I know you must have some wonderful memories to cherish.

Avalon, Admin, your family – my heart goes out to you, and I feel your pain. When I lost the wind beneath my wings way too early, I thought I had lost him forever, but what I came to realize is he was never really gone at all – he was all around me. Every time I reached out to help someone, he was there. Every time I said something funny, he was there. I eventually found that you can never really lose someone who is such a big part of you because he has taught you these things, and that was a comfort. Your dad will always be right there beside you.

Take care of yourselves.

It is so freaking weird that you posted this today. My mother passed away this morning after her long battle with dementia.

During her mental decline, I tried to tell her how she was my hero – a great person, wonderful mother, I’m sure a terrific wife. My Dad was also my hero – a Clark Kent kinda guy that would turn into Superman when needed.

Now both are gone, an end of a era really. Neither one of my parents came from wealth or fame, they just worked hard, raised their families, paid their taxes (!!!), saved and invested for the future, and in their own way made the world a much better place. If I can be 1/10 of the human being, the parents, the citizens that my parents were, I will die happy.

I’m sure my Mom is right now in heaven playing bridge while my Dad is watching the Cubs win the World Series, some Mozart is playing and my Mom has a roast in the oven.

Sorry for your loss,
I always loved this song, it reminds of my mother. So many times she willingly stood in the shadows, so her children could shine. She was the support system of the entire family, so important to each one of us was she that we never had the capacity to know it, until she was gone. I believe the rationalization in this, is that we stand in the shadows, steadfast so that our children may one day outshine us. There is no greater hope for humanity than our children.

Good move, admin

My dad was a jazz musician (not his day job). When he died, my sister and I rented a large hall and invited his musician buddies for a jam session. About two hundred showed up and a rotating impromtu band played for about three hours. We brought food and booze. A few of his friends came up to me and related confidences. My dad was very handsome, charismatic and tall (6.4″). My favorite moment was when some guy who I didn’t know came up to me and said, “what I always admired about your dad was that he was always a gentleman with the ladies.” It was good to know. I’m sure he had his opportunities.

Thanks everyone for all of the kind words. I feel very lucky to have had him as a father, and he was a very involved great grandfather to my kids-always here when they were growing up. They loved when Mommom or Poppop would visit or take them places, or have them for sleepovers.

I have a lot of great memories of my Dad and, yes, I will cherish them. He was fun to be around and had a great sense of humor. I am so grateful that I had this man in my life. I will miss him so much.

Hope, i’m sorry to hear about your Mom, its so sad. Your parents sound like they were similar to mine- definitely no wealth, just a lot of hard work in their lives. Sounds like we were both lucky to have parents that were good people.
