Over the last couple of years, one of the dinner discussions our family has had relates to the observation that many, if not most, of the alleged perpetrators of violent crimes whose photographs appear in the mugshot section of our local newspaper’s crime report are black. We live in a very white area of what used to be rural farms and ranches, but is now being quickly developed with multi-family housing and strip malls. A large metropolitan city is a short drive.
The kids and wife have asked me, “Why do you think it is, dad, that the murderers and robbers are usually black?” How is a dad supposed to answer this?
First, I wanted to look at more data than just the police report of our local paper. What I found is that blacks are 13% of the US population, 37.6% of the US prisoner population, and 71.5% of the shooters in Chicago.

Next, I started to watch and read some popular news reports and articles on the internet about black violence. I challenge each reader to make it through just the following five:
9 Year Black Boy Old Punches, Kicks, and Chokes Toddlers at Daycare
10 Year Old Black Girl Attacks Teacher
Two 15-year-old black boys charged with murder
Three black teenagers charged with murder in the death of 16 year-old.
First-round NBA pick shot and killed 22-year-old mother of four.
Finally, I asked a black sheriff if the notion that most murderers and robbers are black fits with his observations and experience. He responded, “You gotta judge people individually.”
I told him that I agree, and that I am not judging anyone. I asked him, again, “Does the notion that a majority of murders and robberies in your jurisdiction are committed by blacks fit with your observations and experience?” He paused, stared at me, and said, “Yes.”
I asked him if he had an opinion as to why this might be the case, since blacks make up a small minority of the population. I told him that my wife and kids have been asking me these questions.
He said, “You need to watch yourself. You need to be real careful.” Then the black sheriff’s deputy put his hand on his sidearm, stared at me for a moment, turned around, and walked away.
So, this is where I find myself as an American trying to ask one hard question about race and violence in America.
Why do you think it is that the murderers and robbers are usually black? Is it the case where you live? How is a dad supposed to answer this question? Are your wife and kids even able to ask it? Are we as a nation even able to ask it?

Blacks commit a disproportionately large percent of violent crimes.
The majority of blacks do not commit violent crimes.
Both of these statements are true.
I believe that there are roughly 11 million black males between ages 15-34. Annual # of murders in the US is about 14,000, with black males in that age range committing almost half of the 14,000. 7,000 murders by young black men out of 11 million in that cohort = .064% per year. Taking into account both an average 25 year range for committing violent crime and the fact that some of the murderers commit multiple murders, it would seem that roughly 1% of black men in the US are – or will become – murderers. 1% is a high percentage. Even adding, rape, assault, etc., it’s probably true that the majority of black males do not commit violent crime. Most sharks never eat anyone. I still wouldn’t swim wherever a shark has been spotted.
Over the years I pretty much became a “Culturist”. From my experience it is not race that influences groups of people, but the culture they adopt.
Take a black kid and raise him in the Asian culture and you get Tiger Woods. Take an Asian and raise them in the black culture and you get a thug.
As an example, where I live blacks make up 1.7% of the population. They have chosen to assimilate into the existing white culture. They commit no more crimes than whites here. Matter of fact we have a “white-trash” segment that commit a disproportional amount of the crime. The “white-trash” group has many of the traits of the black culture…drugs, fatherless children, women with many children from many fathers, sucking every government assistance program they can.
If I was a father trying to explain to my children I would approach it from that perspective.
Tator, You may have a point. Blacks raised amidst whites do better overall than blacks raised amidst blacks, but if 75% of blacks don’t commit any real crime (excepting driving violations, etc.) and your area is 1.7% black, then only .425% of your area is potentially criminal blacks. You may simply not even notice the crimes blacks do commit. And I doubt that the whites in your area (who probably range from classy to trashy) don’t commit “a disproportional amount of crime” – they probably commit “most of” the crime. There is a difference. In 98% white Vermont, for example, even if whites committed 100% of crime, it couldn’t be meaningfully characterized as “disproportional”.
Unfortunately, a goodly percentage don’t have more than a 85 IQ. Just take a look at those two at the beginning of the article. Feral and violent.

Based on what I see and read it would be best for white people to stay as far as possible away from blacks especially urban blacks. White people are attacked everyday in this country. Re: Tator and the culture theory: that was my outlook for a long time, but having watched many childhood friends in their arc through adulthood, it has become obvious to me that upbringing and culture is the more powerful influence through childhood and up to about 18, but after that, or perhaps even somewhat earlier, genes take over. I have seen people who were basically lazy and dumb as kids become much more capable as adults, and have seen the opposite even more often. I had black childhood friends who had every realistic advantage, including one of the best schools in the state in an area with no significant crime, and they still failed to thrive as adults.
Certainly I would like to believe that simply by better parenting and a change in culture we could fix the problem of crime, violence and social decay, but my personal experience has been that this isn’t how it really works. If you want your kids to do well, you need to pick the best possible mate for producing them. You also need to raise them well, but you aren’t going to create geniuses out of dullards through some sort of “I really hope so” parenting effort.
There are certainly some intelligent, civilized and highly capable people who are black, but it is a much smaller proportion. Both statistics and human experience bear this out.

Check out the odds of any given black male spending time in prison and get back to me.
Also, check out what percentage of crimes committed get solved. In other words, not all criminals are caught.

Just to point out, your statistics on blacks as a percentage of prison population includes blacks imprisoned for the sale or possession of chemicals or plants. Anybody can break down those statistics to only include violent crime?

It is a sad, sad time in America where employment in all categories are declining except in the 55+ age group. Although it was written in 1961, read “Black Like Me: What is it Like, To Be A Negro in the Deep South Today?” I read it when it came out. I grew up in the Negro, Asian, and White corner in Seattle, not Little Rock, but I was young and didn’t have any say in the matter. I have lived in black communities, have been to their houses, talked with them. And you know what, they were just like me. But this was before the great division, courtesy of the Progressives and the racist black agitators. There are good and bad in every race. I don’t paint any group of people with a broad brush.
All the forces of welfare, busing, affirmative action worked against the black community. We will move those ‘darkies’ into the white communities and they will learn how to be neat and proper, off-whites.

Blacks are more likely to be stopped by the police than whites. Therefore, the police will never know that a white Wall Street executive is carrying a tiny amount of marijuana but they will find marijuana on a black man. If blacks are more likely to be stopped by the police, they are more likely to be incarcerated.
Finally, with all due respect your statistics are deceptive and misleading. You never showed what percentage of Chicago’s population is black.

Maybe I’m wrong, but back in the 40’s and 50’s, before low income high rise housing projects and welfare, when there were abundant blue collar jobs in NE cities and black kids grew up with a mother and a father, you didn’t have this kind of criminal activity among the young…and this at a time when they faced real discrimination.

Llpoh, Regarding your suggestion / challenge to look into what percentage of black men are incarcerated in their life: I did what any good researcher does: Google it and read the Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistics_of_incarcerated_African-American_males Apparently the estimated figure for a black male born in 1991 (extrapolated into the future) is 29%. You raise a good point that not all are caught, although my evidence-free conjecture is that while they might “skate” on one or more crimes, they’ll eventually get caught for something. Mitigating that 29% figure to some degree is the purported fact that “The leading cause of incarceration of an African American male is a non-violent drug offense”. (I realize that “leading cause” does not mean the majority of cases.) On the other hand someone dealing heroin is – in my opinion – a violent criminal. My statement was “The majority of blacks do not commit violent crimes.” I still think that’s true, although it would take more effort to confirm than I can muster right now. And my statement may be less true than I’d initially thought.
The problem largely lies in the family or in this case, lack thereof IMO. There are very few dads who are dads and smack the crap out of a belligerent young one. It is largely a Lord of the Flies environment in black families.

The point I was making is that a significant percentage of lacks commit crimes. Another significant percent commit crimes but then get probation. Fifty percent total would not be a bad guess.

In 1981 when I started my life as a wood butcher (carpenter) the work crews were over 50% white, the rest was evenly split between blacks and Mexicans. Almost all of these Mexicans spoke English!! Over the course of the next ten years all the blacks and whites slowly disappeared and the crews have become almost 100% central/South American. The only whites left in the trade, which still pays really well are owners, foreman and management.
Occasionally we have to hire a black due to a gov’t funded project and/ or a female. I try to accomplish both in one hire. Hire a dike just out of prison hand her a broom and tell my foreman don’t let her get hurt. They are totally useless. The black youth today are entitled little shits. I don’t hire them. I don’t hire white little shits either. I hire all central/ South Americans.

The safest thing you can be in Chicago is white and female, and hyper-alert. Not a huge number of sexual assaults on white women, either, even though there have been a couple I know of, of college girls who were unaware when they were walking back to their apartments late at night and some extremely friendly guy fell in beside them, and at a very opportune location, suddenly became very unfriendly. The black or hispanic guy who suddenly falls into step beside you and starts talking you up aggressively is very, very bad news for the most part. Be careful of guys getting too friendly with you, especially if you have to be out late at night. I learned evasive action when very young in another city. If you see anything that looks like trouble- which is any pack of dark-skinned males you see- get across the street. Nothing protects you as much as being aware of your surroundings at all times.
