Looking for something to do on Sunday now that you no longer watch football?

I’d like to start this off by thanking Jim for allowing me to post here. I’ve been reading TBP for many years, and I’m humbled to be able to give something back. I’ve toyed with the idea of writing up a post on getting started in competitive shooting, and apparently I’m finally getting around to doing so. I originally intended on briefly describing each of the types of matches I shoot in one post, but it quickly turned into a much longer article than most would bother reading. My hope, with Admin’s blessing, is to post several articles, short enough that at least some of you guys will take the time to read them.

Several years ago, I discovered USPSA, and my interest in shooting sports has only grown. With the audience TBP attracts, I think I can safely assume many of you are gun enthusiasts. If you are looking for a better way to spend your Sundays than giving your eyes, money, and attention to a bunch of overpaid and pampered athletes who hate you, then you are reading the right post. Most of you probably have the most expensive item needed to participate in this sport – a handgun – and would not need to spend more than another $100 to be completely ready.

No, President Obama, It’s Not Easier To Buy A Glock Than A Book

Guest Post by Sean Davis

No, President Obama, It’s Not Easier To Buy A Glock Than A Book

During his speech at the memorial service in Dallas for murdered police officers, President Barack Obama lamented that his words have little power to effect change, then proceeded to peddle blatant, easily refutable lies about guns.

“I’ve seen how inadequate words can be in bringing about lasting change,” Obama said. “I’ve seen how inadequate my own words have been.”

One reason for that inadequacy may be that he says things he knows aren’t true. Over the weekend, Obama said, “I think it’s very hard to untangle the motives of this shooter.” Given that the shooter himself told police that he “wanted to kill white people, especially white officers,” there doesn’t seem to be much left to untangle.

Another reason for the inadequacy of the president’s words may be that he so often says things that other people know aren’t true. Take, for example, a new gun claim that he for some reason decided to trot out at a memorial service for murdered police officers on Tuesday:

“It’s easier for a teenager to get his hands on a Glock than a computer…or even a book.”

Set aside for the moment the question of whether this kind of political speechifying is appropriate for a solemn memorial service, and just focus on the assertion itself: “It’s easier for a teenager to get his hands on a Glock than a computer…or even a book.”

Is there anyone in America, other than its commander-in-chief, who believes for a second that this even remotely approximates the truth? It’s not just false. It’s laughably false.

TAZE ME BRO

Yet another round of criticism flared up on social media after the release of a video from the Tulsa County, Okla., Sheriff’s Office of a reportedly accidental fatal police shooting of an unarmed man by a reserve deputy.

Eric Harris, who was black, allegedly ran from police after he reportedly tried to sell an undercover officer a semiautomatic pistol in a sting operation and was killed by a 73-year-old white reserve deputy who thought he was firing a Taser gun, according to media reports.

GLOCK FAIL #7,139,860

And this is yet another in an extremely LONG string of incidents illustrating two crucial facts: 1. Cops are fucking stupid and should not be trusted with firearms. 2. Glocks and any other pistols that have no manual safety are fucking stupid and should not be placed anywhere near cops (See #1).

Indiana police chief accidentally shoots himself for the second time

An Indiana police chief’s day ended with a bang when he accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday – the second time in his career that he’s turned his own gun on his body.

David Councellor is running to become Fayette County’s new sheriff, but he chose the wrong way to make headlines when he unintentionally discharged his 40-caliber Glock handgun while perusing other firearms at a local gun shop.

A 33-year veteran of the Connersville Police Department, Councellor had taken his Glock out to compare it to another gun in the store. When he tried putting the gun back into his holster, he found himself shooting his own thigh.

“I need to pay more attention,” Counceller said to the Palladium-Item. “I know what the dangers are. It was pure carelessness on my part.”

“It got tangled in my clothing,” Counceller added to the newspaper. “I was wearing a sweatshirt and a fleece jacket. I felt (the gun) go in the holster and I pushed it, but it was tangled in the material which caused it to discharge. The bullet went into my leg and then into the floor.”

Councellor was able to drive himself to the hospital for treatment – he suffered a flesh wound – and said he’d be back to work on Tuesday.

Although Connersville Mayor Leonard Urban called Counceller “an excellent marksman,” this isn’t the first time the police chief has shot himself. About 15 years ago, he accidentally discharged his gun into his hand.

Despite his accidents, Councellor is hoping to draw some lessons from the unfortunate situation.

“If anyone says this could never happen to them, they’re mistaken,” Counceller said. “You have to keep your guard up at all times. Some candidates are out there doing things for kids to try to get elected. Me, I shoot myself. What a way to get publicity.”
