Wildwood prepares for Kenny Chesney’s beach concert
June 21, 2012|By Jacqueline L. Urgo, Inquirer Staff Writer
WILDWOOD – For something that is supposed to be “unstaged” – as if country music’s Kenny Chesney just stumbled upon a beach, framed by a boardwalk Ferris wheel and roller-coaster, on which to host a free concert for 20,000 people – there’s an awful lot of stagecraft going on in this seaside resort.
For days, crews have been building a four-story stage and gated general-admission area on the wide Schellenger Avenue beach for Chesney’s Wednesday night concert, the latest installment of the “American Express Unstaged” music series.
With his own team, the director Jonathan Demme – known for The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia, as well as films showcasing Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and Talking Heads – has been scouting angles for the show. Demme will direct a 75-minute livestream of the performance by the No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem singer.
At this Jersey Shore playground, where the concert is expected to be the largest ever held on the beach, Chesney fever has set in.
Motels and hotels, which were booked solid as soon as the concert was announced on June 7, are festooned with banners welcoming Chesney fans. Occupancy rates this time of the year normally hover around 30 percent, officials said.
Bars and restaurants are offering pre- and postconcert parties and Chesney-themed drink specials – maybe a “Hemingway’s Whiskey” or a “You and Tequila” will be in order. And some plan to offer the concert to patrons via widescreens.
Chesney T-shirts celebrating the Welcome to the Fishbowl CD released Tuesday are already for sale in Boardwalk shops.
And in an amusing twist, considering that actual concertgoers paid nothing for their passes, the Splash Zone Waterpark is selling about four dozen $75 tickets to a VIP area on a concrete-and-steel deck that offers a “vantage point” of the stage about 2,000 feet away.
“The town is going crazy in a good way, like it’s a Saturday night or the Fourth of July,” said Will Knapp, Splash Zone’s marketing director.
The water park, which closes at 6 p.m., will reopen at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Knapp said. For $50 general admission, those who may have not gotten tickets to the show can get close enough to possibly hear it.

Nowhere in his “proof” is there any cost analysis – some vague references re occupancy rates. Just how many extra rooms were actually let? Doesn’t say. Just how much was Kenny paid? Doesn’t say. Just how many of the 20,000 people were local and how many were from out of town? Doesn’t say. How much did the city spend on organization and clean-up? Doesn’t say.
It is obvious that Admin has no idea how to run a cost benefit analysis. And if history has shown one thing re these bread and circuses it is that it almost ALWAYS costs more to throw these little free parties than they bring back into the community.

June 25, 2012 9:22 pm
Admin says tax revenue soared, and covered the cost of Kenny. Please provide some FACTS re that. Let’s say the little exercise cost 1 million. Just where do they get tax revenue? He doesn’t say. But let’s assume that that the tax revenue recovery is 10% of every dollar spent – that would imply that $10 million would have to flow into Wildwood to achieve that amount. I googled up that wildwood has 8000 rooms – lets say that the occupancy did in fact increase by 60% – facts not in evidence of course- and that there are 2 persons per room = 9600 people came in. In order to cover costs, then each person would have to spend $1000 – all of it taxable by the city (which is certainly HORSESHIT). There is NO WAY IN HELL the city recovered its expenditures.
Once again, llpoh obliterates Admin’s infantile arguments with simple mathematics.
Oh boy. This is sooooo sweet. Looks like llpoh finishes last again. Time for the Dartmouth Dunce Cap. I can’t wait for his backtracking and bullshit. The entire concert was paid for by American Express. OOPS!!!!

Credit American Express sponsorship for Kenny Chesney’s Wildwood concert
June 22, 2012|By Linda Loyd and INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Kenny Chesney’s mega concert on the beach in Wildwood on Wednesday night was the 10th “unstaged” music concert sponsored by American Express Co. since 2010.
These gigs, which have teamed top artists with equally top-tier directors — filmmaker Jonathan Demme produced the live-stream of Chesney’s performance on YouTube — are designed to give artists exposure during new-album release weeks, and give fans input through social media and tweeting to unlock a special encore at the live performance.
The free, 75-minute concert from the Jersey Shore, one day after the release of Chesney’s new album Welcome to the Fishbowl, was billed as the largest outdoor concert ever on the beach in Wildwood — with more than 20,000 Chesney fans.
Anyone in the United States and many around the globe tuned in to watch the live-stream. American Express cardmembers could also download a free copy of Chesney’s hit single “Come Over” at iTunes.
“The idea behind this is we’ve had an incredibly passionate and engaged cardmember base of music fans,” said Deborah Curtis, American Express’ vice president of entertainment and marketing sponsorships. “There’s only a finite space to any venue. The live experience is so special. How do we transport that live experience to an at-home audience in a way that’s really compelling and makes the at-home viewer feel like they are part of the experience.”
American Express created the “unstaged” music series in partnership with Vevo and YouTube. The credit card company declined to disclose its investment in the series, which began with a performance by Arcade Fire and Terry Gilliam in August 2010. A concert last October by Coldplay and Anton Corbijn broke YouTube live-stream records.
American Express spent $40 million to $45 million on corporate sponsorships in 2011, ranking 26th among all U.S. sponsors, according to IEG L.L.C. in Chicago, which analyzes corporate sponsorship in sports, the arts, causes, and entertainment marketing

I know exactly how llpoh will respond as he is incapapable of admitting defeat – a trait of all Boomers. He will contend that sponsorship does not mean American Express paid for the concert. Grasping at straws.

I await your concession of total defeat.
Wildwood Officials Ready For Kenny Chesney Concert
by Robin Rieger
WILDWOOD, N. J. (CBS)
Fans spent their time cooling down and spending money in stores and restaurants.
“[They] probably were spending a good $400 or $500,” says Ann Marie Gifford of Scranton.
Gifford brought some Kenny Chesney fans with her from Scranton, and they have big plans for the day: “Do some shopping, go on the beach, maybe do some jet skiing,” explains Gifford.
Business owners like George Caravangelos are fans of Kenny Chesney’s fans. “It’s going to be great for business [since] this is off season, we have extra staff,” says Caravangelos, the owner of Du Wop Diner.
Paul Franco is glad to be running the Ocean Sands Hotel and Smitty’s Parking. “We’re full at the hotel, we rented our last room this morning. It’s mainly concert goers,” he explains.
“This has got to be worth $15-$20 million to the City of Wildwood,” says Mayor Ernie Troiano, who also says many city employees are on overtime. But the expected $40,000 price tag will be covered by concert sponsor, American Express.
“It’s [not] just police, it’s fire, public works…we brought in a security company, Strike Force is the name of it, and there’s about 120 people working security inside the event,” says Troiano.
The stage faces the boardwalk. There are metal bleachers set up, but most fans will stand in a fenced in area and can only access the beach area with tickets.
Occupancy tax, excise tax on the gallons of swill, sales taxes, increased boardwalk traffic, air fares, media exposure and less global warming from all the fishbellied mullets reflecting UV’s back into space….
Free concerts are a win-win.

Kenny Chesney’s mega concert on the beach in Wildwood on Wednesday night was the 10th “unstaged” music concert sponsored by American Express Co. since 2010.

Llpoh attempted to refute the Admin with his $1 million comment just as Admin blew him out of the water. I await llpoh’s admission of defeat and sorrowful plea for mercy.
I know exactly how llpoh will respond as he is incapapable of admitting defeat – a trait of all Boomers. He will contend that sponsorship does not mean American Express paid for the concert. Grasping at straws.
What a humiliating defeat for llpoh witnessed by the thousands of TBP visitors. I should stick this post to the front page to rub it in llpoh’s face.
From Admin’s cut and paste: “The credit card company declined to disclose its investment in the series”.
Sheesh – don’t Admin rread what he posts?
llpoh with an absolutely pitiful response as he knows he has been crushed like a cigarette butt by Admin.
Don’t admit you were obliterated llpoh. That makes it sweeter.
llpoh has crawled into a corner and is now rocking and sucking his thumb
OH NO!!!!
The coup de grace applied to llpoh’s scorched ass. Test your comprehension skills you doddering old fool. The mayor of Wildwood estimated the concert would bring in $15 to $20 million to the city. THE ENTIRE $40,000 COST TO THE CITY WAS PAID FOR BY AMERICAN EXPRESS.
Admin learns his lesson. Never mess with a big dog.
How come this thread has gone silent?
Anyone out there?
Occupancy tax, excise tax on the gallons of swill, sales taxes, increased boardwalk traffic, air fares, media exposure and less global warming from all the fishbellied mullets reflecting UV’s back into space….
Free concerts are a win-win.
Chesney got some free publicity by the media. No matter his cost.
Madonna has done the same.
The state got some revenue.
Others enjoyed the music.
Tshirts were sold.
Beer was drank.
DUIs were made.
The national guard was NOT called in.
Good times.
Any artist who wears a cowboy hat is immediately a douchebag.
Admin: Not silent….
Didn’t want to waste a whole pot so I got a small cup at ‘bucks instead.
Still not one single fact presented by Admin. Admin doing his best Flash imitation. How sad.
Llpoh proves his comprehension skills have deteriorated to such a degree that his reputation as a self proclaimed Big Dog is no longer valid. By failing to acknowledge the FACT that American Express paid for the entire concert as part of their promotional budget, he has given all TBP members a glimpse into his blackened soul. What else would you expect from an Ivy Leaguer. Sad. So very sad.
Admin turns to the MSM for “facts” when he is getting thrashed.
This exchange reads like a really bad DND session.
TPC, heh heh.
I just feel like saying “kids these days!” … llpoh, you young fogey!
TPC: LOL
Wait til the Dm starts playing dirty.
Admin once again shows he is financially innumerate. The $40k he is crowing about obviously means the overtime premium cost to the city, not the entire cost. He needs to read for comprehension. $40k would not even cover the transport costs/set-up and tear-down costs. $40k is just $2 per person – I just googled Kenny ticket prices, and the first I found was $272 – each. Bwahahahahaha!
Admin has bought into the MSM lies. Oh, the horror! The horror!
LLPOH delivers the knockout kick to the Admin’s nuts.
I didn’t expect anything less from a former TBP Big Dog. When crushed by an overwhelming torrent of facts, ignore them and attack with verocity. Admin shakes his head and admires llpoh’s spunk in the face of utter defeat and humiliation.
One does not remain a big dog by allowing the Admin to claim victory when he has been soundly thrashed. His gaming of the voting system, his removal of posts to suit his arguments and to eliminate his mistakes, are stuff of legend, sure enough, but in the end, those that keep attacking his shrivelled flanks come out on top.
It is a shame to see the once proud Admin, Big Dog Emeritus, reduced to this in the face of my continued onslaught:

By the way: I can’t decide which aurically challenged loser is worse. Kenny Chesney with his attempts to imitate a gargling camel with chlamydia of the throat, or that snappy lil dresser from Green Day who likes his britches to ride below his knees for easy access from the rear!
You would think after a historic embarrassment of epic proportions at the hands of the Admin, llpoh would stay in his corner sucking his thumb and mumbling to himself about how it was all the free shit army’s fault. But no. He actually wants to keep this thread alive to show everyone his dunce cap level debate performance. Even SSS was too embarrassed to enter the fray on llpoh’s behalf.
