Around 16,000 soldiers hailing from 16 nations ventured to Nordland, Norway on Wednesday to test their air, land and maritime mettle as part of the UN-approved ‘Cold Response’ training exercise. The purpose of the exercise is to train international troops unaccustomed to extreme weather and cold conditions to perform combat operations in icy temperatures in the case of a crisis situation.

As much as I hate US bullying, what I hate even more is the never-ending and unwarranted belief in the omnipotence of US power – especially military power. We got run out of Vietnam, run out of Iraq, we’re getting run out of Afghanistan. It’s not that we should be ashamed of losing, it’s that there’s no way to win. Those are their countries, and whenever we leave they just revert to whatever they were before. That’s the way it’s been since WWII. We don’t have the will to drop atom bombs on countries or firebomb them like Dresden (and we shouldn’t). Therefore we can’t “win” in any meaningful sense. When GW Bush was in office he liked to use the word “must”. Such-and-such a country “must” do x, y or z. The fuck they must. What if they don’t? Russia “must” get out of Georgia. Really? How are you going to make them – and why is it our problem? Obama and Kerry just use different language. Instead of “must”, they talk about international law and Russia’s supposed obligation to respect Ukraine’s sovereign borders. What the fuck ever. We have major delusions of grandeur. The good thing is that other countries will finally figure out that if they’re counting on us coming to their defense, they’re fucking stupid. You hear that, Taiwan? We are not going to fight China over Taiwan. Period. So we might as well not tell China what they “must” do.

I believe the NeoCons think they can win a nuclear war with Russia now.
Of course it would have to be by a first strike attack.
I think our NeoCon government believes it could neutralize any Russian response and, having done that, win the nuke out with little cost to the US.
This makes me feel better about Obama, Kerry, our generals, and our government pushing Putin and Russia into a corner.
