The storyline for the horrible US sales has been that competition is tougher, blah, blah, blah. It’s all a crock. The American lower and middle class are so hard up for cash, they can’t even afford the $5 for a crappy McShits meal. Barnes & Noble sales were also negative. Gap sales were negative. Wal-Mart sales are negative. Target sales are negative. Olive Garden sales are negative. It isn’t competition. It’s a country running on fumes while the oligarchs pillage, rape and gut the remnants of wealth.
McDonald’s sales woes continue in August

McDonald’s Corp. said its global sales fell 3.7% in August as problems with one of its suppliers in Asia drove a precipitous drop in sales in the region and the core U.S. market continued struggling as well.
The sales decline was steeper than expected as Consensus Metrix had called for a 3.1% drop.
In the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa region, sales at existing locations slid 14.5% last month.
McDonald’s has said it is seeking to restore customer trust in China, where it has more than 2,000 stores, following problems that began in late July with meat supplier Shanghai Husi Food Co., owned by U.S.-based OSI Group LLC.
Authorities accused the Shanghai plant of intentionally selling expired meat to restaurant companies after a television station ran a report alleging the practice.
On Tuesday, McDonald’s said it expects the China supplier issue will hurt third-quarter results by about 15 cents to 20 cents a share, largely because of lost sales, expenses related to its recovery efforts and the effect of these items on the quarter’s tax rate.
Earlier this month, McDonald’s said it is overhauling its food-safety strategy in China after problems with a supplier hit the fast-food chain’s image and eroded its sales in the country.
The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company said in a statement that it will review surveillance video from meat-production sites in China and boost audits of suppliers. Other steps include the creation of anonymous hotlines for suppliers and their employees to report unethical or noncompliant practices and the dispatching of quality-control specialists to all of McDonald’s meat-production facilities in China, the company said.
“We are diligently working to effectively navigate the current market conditions to regain momentum,” Chief Executive Officer Don Thompson said in a statement Tuesday.
In the U.S., sales slid 2.8% as the company faced multiple headwinds, including sluggish industry growth in a competitive marketplace, the company said.
The U.S. has been a particularly challenging market for McDonald’s, where the company has said it has lost relevance with consumers. Mr. Thompson has said that the company first needs to repair fundamentals, such as staffing restaurants appropriately during peak hours, and has noted that the company is working to streamline its menu as previous efforts to roll out numerous menu items served to complicate matters.
Meanwhile, McDonald’s said sales at existing restaurants in Europe ticked down 0.7% as weak performance in Russia offset gains in the U.K. The fast-food chain warned that weak consumer sentiment will likely hurt sales and profitability in the region.

It’s funny to listen to rich people – like network talking heads, analysts, tenured department heads at Ivy League schools, government bureaucrats, Wall Street – try and figure out/justify why their business model of infinite growth in a finite world is failing, especially seeing as how now is AFTER slaughtering their best customers by moving their jobs to Asia and their money/businesses to the 0.1%

I tell people an alternative is most supermarkets have deli’s which are better and cheaper that fast food.
I buy food at the grocery store on my way to work after i leave the gym. You buy real food while staying out of the aisles and eat a lunch that is made of real food that costs half as much.
That doesnt work for most americans because:
A: I wake up at 4:30am
B: I improve & train at a gym
C: I go to a job and earn money

Whether because eaters around the world and in the US would rather eat even fattier, more expensive, more calorific equivalents such as MCD-spinoff Chipotle, or because the global consumer/eater can not even afford the cheapest form of a dollar meal, is unknown, but what is quite clear is that the company which was once the bellwether of the US commodity eater, McDonalds, just reported global comp store sales which saw a decline of -3.7% from a year ago, its worst monthly print in a decade!
This was driven in big part by the US where comparable sales declined by 2.8% in August and have not posted a positive monthly print since December, but mostly due to Asia where as a result of the ongoing fast-food scare, comp store sales cratered by a record 14.5%. If indeed this is part of a secular shift away from made in the US fast food, and if this too is as a result of an Edwards Snowden-predicated backlash against all that is US, then Asians truly owe the NSA whistleblower: they just added some 10 years to their average life expectancy.

I just eat at McDonald’s . A quarter pound combo was 6.98 with taxes. That’s here in Chattanooga TN.

For my daughter and I to eat at McD’s (or other) fast food now runs about $10, or more.
I can get 3 small cheeseburgers (slider size), a large fry (truly large and great thick & fluffy fries) and a med coke (small in some places), for less than $5 at my local burger counter.
The food is ten times better, the staff is made up of neighborhood people, and the business is subject all the same draconian taxes and regulations as mine is – compared to the oft overlooked and tax abated of the big guys.
Plus I can walk there.
The sooner these big corps die, the sooner we can get our country back. With any luck.
TE, just talking to my wife about that today as we were eating in an almost empty Branns, there were maybe eight people there including us.
I think the days are numbered for fast food joints and Branns type restaurant. Can’t wait for the locally owned and operated restaurants to make a comeback.
I do the drive-thru at McShits on the way to work every once in a while for a coffee. Cheaper than rip off Starbucks, etc. but not by much. Thought they were going to save themselves by offering shitty McGriddles all day? The dollar menu is more like the $2 menu too.

Mcdonalds has features.
1) Prime locations
2) Store hours from 5am to late nite. This adds marginal revenues and establishes brand loyalty.
3) there remodeling in many locations with the benefit of free wifi makes them chic.
The fact is Burger King and mcdonalds are getting much more expensive for what little food you actually get.
However, it’s still a better price deal then so called mom and pops. And that includes gas stations.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if your local deli isn’t hurting either but you won’t know it because of all the under the table money. Inflation has a tendency for people to buy less irrespective of what Krugan believes.

@Card, that is what scares me. The mom & pop’s will be the sole/remaining focus of the thousand level bureaucracy that passes for a free market in this country.
And you know how hard it is to face inspections, audits, oft-changing regulations, and paperwork while the authorities still have much bigger places to bother.
Once the big(ger) guys start closing, if history is to be my guide it will take years – if ever – for the size of the bureaucracy to shrink to its new reality.

I haven’t eaten mcshits for at least 10yrs, maybe more. I don’t like corporation food, usually avoid it. I had In n out a few months ago. I usually go to a local burger joint where they serve organic burgers for 9 bucks. Screw all of these greedy fucks. If they sold quality food I would not mind paying but I’m sure as hell not going to pay them to poison me.
Mark as a former accountant for a number of small businesses, and current co-owner, I take offense at your implying that they are not reporting all their sales.
Most of those little places have owners that are as honest as the day is long. They are also audited up the ass – including the posting of agents to tally hourly/daily sales and compare it to reported.
Here, let me help you with something, McD’s and other corp food chains have a dozen or so people at the top making OBSCENE amounts of – largely low, or no, tax money. Mom & pop, if successful, pay 39.some odd percent (it has recently increased), in federal taxes, plus state, plus local, plus property, plus equipment, plus certifications, licenses, etc., etc. Yet you love to get your dig into ole’ mom & pop. Rich, evil, struggling to remain middle class mom & pop. The same mom & pop that used to provide SEVENTY-FIVE percent of all private (non-government) jobs. It barely provides 40% now, and I don’t even believe the SBA tells you.
This attitude is a big reason why this country is insane with laws, and losing jobs by the second. One bad apple creates a whole new department of bureaucrats to “protect” their own jobs, er I mean the people. One more regulation, law suit, blue suit, audit, in your office and you quickly figure out it is hardly worth it anymore.
We have bankrupted the entrepreneurial spirit that made this country great. And now we continue to think that the evil businessmen are getting theirs. Good luck with that in your underemployed future.

The few times I went insid if there was any kind of line at all, I just left and ate somewhere else. McD’s has the slowest sevice of any fast food place.
