You should see the rats at O’Hare Airport. The place is crawling with them. It is hilarious to watch a family of rats leading the CTA train into the pocket at the O’Hare station.

They’re everywhere we are, just waiting their chance- waiting for our vigilance to slip. Any place that has a lot of food service fights constant, ongoing battles with rodents and bugs. Shopping malls are plagued with them.

I remember when some vacant apartment buildings a block from me in St Louis were being gutted and rehabbed. The minute the gutting began with all the noise and movement, dozens of rats were seen streaming out of those buildings and making a bee line for the inhabited structures a block away.

Our ancestors brought the common Norway rat to North America in the holds of their ships, and if we ever go out to space en masse, they’ll be out there with us.

They survived the bomb testing on Fiji, flourishing in a place that was rendered unfit for human habitation. And they’ll survive US.

I wrote a post a little while ago about visiting my mom in the hospital in NYC. I wrote about the rat we say on the rails …. the size of a small dog, let’s say a Boston Terrier ………. fucking HUGE, I tell ya. And yeah, we saw rat shit droppings all over the platform. In keeping with the “If-you-see-something-say-something” mantra, I reported that fucking rat, but the fucking rat I reported it too just laughed at me. Rat bastard motherfucker.

While at my parent’s house this weekend I took a break to watch the newz with them. They watch two stations; some German station at 6PM, and BBC at 6:30PM. So, the Moscow subway system just celebrated their 70th anniversary, and BBC did a little story on it, 5 minutes. I can’t believe I found it on youtube!!!

They keep telling me NYC is the greatest city on earth. Someone forgot to tell the Russians.

So the rats are a problem because of the pigs – who throw food and garbage everywhere.

Fuck ’em! If people want to live like animals, they have to endure living with them. It says a lot that those interviewed don’t mind.

Anytime I see trash in the parking lot where I work I pick it up and throw it away. My job is located in a small industrial park. Cardinal healthcare rented a suite in the park and it seems that most of their employees smoke. I complained because there were literally thousands of cigarette butts littering the parking lot in front of their suite. My complaints fell on deaf ears so I wrote to their corporate offices pointing out links to Google Earth where they could actually see the cigarette butts in satellite and aerial photographs. (their butts were predominantly white and showed up well against the dark asphalt) About a week later it was cleaned up. Our astronomy club sponsors several miles of “adopt a highway” near our dark sky sight and we pick up trash three times a year. I also pick up trash on my street, in my yard and alley. It’s really not hard.

I’ve ridden the Moscow subways several time and it really is like walking in miles of museum. That being said, I would never visit New York and that gathering of humanity and for certain I would never ride that subway. Funny, I felt safer with all the soldiers and Kalashnikovs in Russia then I would with New York’s finest.
